Now Its Time to Count to Seven

Now that you know of the different types of lightsabers it is time to put them to use. You also get to talk in ways that sound Japanese. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, there is a good chance we will get the forms from Kotor. Each one has strengths and many have some weaknesses as well. Knowing all the styles and how to put them to use could be essential for combat against difficult foes.

Form I Shii-Cho: The first style learned by almost all force users. It is an extension of metal sword styles. This style has few perks, but few drawbacks as well. Kit Fisto was skilled at it, but it was no match for 3 seconds with Palpatine.

Form II Makashi: Made for lightsaber vs lightsaber combat. Curved hilts were designed for this form in mind. The major drawback with this form is that while it is designed to cut Jedi down, it is vulnerable to blaster fire. Dooku was a master of this form and it served him well until he encountered Anakin the second time.

Form III Soresu: This style is made for long battles and deflecting blasters. Many Jedi took up this skill because of these features. Our friend Obi-Wan Kenobi preferred to use this style and it worked well into old age. If you go with this expect a long battle, because this seems like a tank form.

Form IV Ataru: AKA Aggression form. All you Sith and not so nice Jedi need to pay attention. With this style you jump around and strike fast. This is what we saw with Darth Maul. While he was able to hold off two Jedi with this technique it is designed for 1vs1 combat. Go in with your heroic attitude and you may be shot/cut down by multiple opponents.

Form V Shien: Shien is a modification of Form III to allow more offensive moves. Remember your the aggressor with this form, so you focus more on attack rather than defense. Both Luke and Vader use this form, so everyone can feel like a hero with this style. You also look cool when you hold the lightsaber over your head.

Form VI Niman: This is for you dual wielders out there. With two lightsabers you have twice the power. This style tries to take the advantages and minimize the losses. It is also good if your indecisive. If you want to be a Dark Lord of the Sith remember predecessors like Exar Kun used this style in his battles against the Republic. Just remember this is not limited to dual wielders, it just suits them best.

Form VII Juyo: The Jedi don't like to admit this form is around because it tends to lead to the Dark Side. The name of the game is pure offense. Think Mace Windu used it and managed to hold off Palpatine's skill in combat. This is also the style Darth Maul used in combat when he wasnt jumping around with form IV.

If you dont have a standard lightsaber there is a good chance you will go with one of the forms not listed above. While it is important to know them, they are often limited to just the type of lightsaber they are designed around. If you want to put it into game I bet that these forms will be merged with the others to allow all lightsaber users to deal with the same decisions. There is also one form that everyone, including non force users have, Form Zero. It follows the idea "He who fights and runs away, lives to run away again."
