Forum Buzz: Fear of the Unknown

The hype train for Star Wars: The Old Republic is moving full steam ahead in the wake of the recent Testing Program signups, however it seems some passengers are getting antsy. As the machine moves faster, those on board are finding it easier and easier to jump to conclusions, with even the smallest piece of information inciting a dramatic response. The community on the official forums has always had a constant ebb and flow that cycles around the information released by BioWare, but lately it seems erratic and unpredictable; almost as though people are scared of what we will learn next.

Information is a funny thing. As humans, we seek it insatiably, and yet every new fact we get yields more questions then it resolves. The absence of knowledge drives people to fill those gaps with guesses, hypotheses, and assumptions. While making a guess or hypothesis can be fun and intellectually entertaining, assumptions can be deceiving and fear inducing.

This is just astrue for information regarding games in development. Each new reveal opens multiple avenues for speculation, and, in this marketing controlled vacuum, fearful assumption sare beginning to run rampant. Whether it's class balance, visualfidelity or pay structure, some find it easier to combat our collective ignorance with suppositions framed as facts. These have always been present within the community, but people are holding to them even more tenaciously now that they're buffeted by some smalllevel of truth.

The simple solution is that we all need to realize that we're still just riding a roller coaster and the best thing we can do is try to enjoy the experience. Each new fact that we receive should be handled like a blind corner, there is no reason to be afraid of what's around the bend until we see it.After we truly know what's coming, we can then approach the situation constructively and lett he developers know what we think.

All of us following the development cycle should focus more on what is actually being said, as opposed to what we believe is being said.Taking the extra time to absorb what is known will make it easier for everyone to be on the same page, without these assumptions creating fear responses. In the end, this will make the community more enjoyable and much more effective, allowing our voices to truely be heard.

i find it sad how people jump to conclusion so quickly, then they get all hyped over things that arent confirmed, they get false hope and then they bitch the developpers because they didint do what thay "said".

if you just look at the coruscant video making, you can see all the efforts and sweat they are putting in a single planet, and we know theres gonna be more than 1, so if all planet quality is up-par with what we saw (which it is, check nal hutta as a single example) and if everything in the game is also up-par with such work-quality (why wouldnt it be ?) then were bound for an awesome game and i will happy ly say f*** you to all the doomsayers out there.

some centuries ago heretics were burned to death...that'd be a pleasant distraction while we wait for the game no ? :P i call a doomsayer witchhunt xD

Leave the doomsayers be. Let them be the whiny and miserable cusses that they are.

Knowledge and our pursuit of it has always been a blessing and a curse. In this case, the thirst for trying to figure the specifics of this game out are like a drug addiction, completely insatiable. I try to emotionally disconnect from things like rumors as much as possible. When you create hopes and expectations, when you build a dream in your mind, the reality is ALWAYS a disappointment. Better to let yourself be pleasantly surprised instead of mired in "I thought they were going to have _____/do ______."
