The Morally Grey Jedi Knight

Everyone on the Star Wars: The Old Republic official forums, and at Darth Hater, has their hearts all a-flutter over the possible announcement of the Jedi Knight, the anticipated lightsaber-wielding class for the Republic side of things. With the Sith Warrior taking center stage for the latter part of the summer, it seems that the holidays will be bringing us plenty of the lighter side of things with their peace-loving Jedi counterparts.

But is everything so black and white with regards to the Jedi? TOR's morality choice system provides an interesting branching pathway to what is normally thought of as the iconic, white-hat wearing goody-two-shoes of the Star Wars universe. While the Jedi have been known to be the keepers of order and peace in the universe, the dedication to that ideal has been known to create some morally grey moments in their history. This has taken the form of simple reluctance to do the right thing (as Yoda feels about training Luke), to subtle machinations (Luke's temporary gift of droid friends R2-D2 and C-3PO to Jabba the Hutt).

It's not like BioWare is a stranger to this, either. Knights of the Old Republic, without really spoiling it for those who haven't played it yet, features a prominent plot point where the Jedi are painted as morally ambiguous puppetmasters. They are not entirely innocent when it comes to the matter of one Darth Revan, and it would be interesting to pose the same kinds of moral questions towards Jedi Knight players in The Old Republic.

Don't get me wrong though, while it may or may not be possible to play a corrupt Jedi Knight looking to take down the Republic, the neutral choices could be much more interesting. I think what we'll see, as referred to in the Gamespot Q&A about the Sith Warrior, that would-be Jedi Knights will be given choices to take a completely good path, or sacrifice something for the "greater good" by taking a moral hit in the short term. Does the Jedi Knight punish a poor drifter in the name of justice for stealing from the Order, or let him go with sympathy towards his plight? Do you swoop down into battle to save refugees from an invading Sith force or let them get slaughtered so they serve as a distraction towards winning the campaign?

These are just a couple of the morally grey choices that I think the Jedi Knight might have to face during their career in TOR. Like anything in the game involving the moral choice system, I think this could potentially add a nice layer of complexity to what is supposed to be a straightforward role.

For me, the Jedi class hold no appeal. That said, if there were bonuses to staying neutral (i.e. spells that only greys could use) then I'd probably roll one.

I don't know. It would be cool to see a Jedi Force-Choking a Sith, or Force Lightning on a BH, but going into the Grey side may have some penalties, as I can't see any special abilities.

I personally love the inclusion of a "neutral" alignment. Plenty of the lorehounds on the forums take issue with whether a "grey jedi" exists or not, but I find it a refreshing take that BioWare understands that not everyone is an angel or a demon.

It's more than just the "inclusion" of the neutral alignment. It would be more acknowledgment that some people like to play it on the fence instead of go into the extremes.
And unless the lore arguments on whether a "Gray Jedi" exists or not; some people have the delusion that the Gray Jedi would be a third faction (Of sorts), which most of us sane people know otherwise. They would just be a moral choice who enjoys apathy :)
