  • Guide: Legacy System

    Patch 1.2 brought a lot of big changes to Star Wars: The Old Republic, the most significant of which being arguably the Legacy System. In a very general sense, the Legacy System provides players with a way to customize many more aspects of their game experience. As players level they accrue "Legacy experience," which contributes to their Legacy level in the same way that normal experience points contribute to character level. Higher and higher Legacy levels unlock a wide range of additional features, from convenience abilities and vanity customizations to permanent stat boosts. Better yet, these unlocks are not limited to just one character -- they affect all of the characters on the player's server (character-specific Legacy unlocks are coming with 1.3)!   • Level 50 PvE Starter Guide

    The euphoria of reaching the level cap for the first time is often followed by a great uncertainty: what happens now? A whole host of new game features open up at level 50, features that the leveling process does little to prepare players for. The options can be daunting and bewildering. Just what are “daily” missions, and what is so great about them? Should I focus on Hard mode Flashpoints? I am not in a guild, should I join one? What are Operations, and can I eat 12 hours before I attempt one? Fear not, new level 50 reader — all of these questions and more will be addressed after the jump.

  • Open Forum: State of Crafting

    It should not be a surprise to everyone that a vast amount of changes accompanied Game Update 1.2: Legacy patch when BioWare deployed it back in April. With it now a little over a month after its release, we want to get a sense of what the community at large thinks of the current state of crafting. Was the revamp to Crew Skills everything you wanted it to be? Where do you want to see it go? What do you think of the announced augment changes proposed for 1.3? No matter your opinion on the matter, we want to hear it in the comments section after the jump. Keep the opinions constructive and do not flame your peers. We will moderate accordingly.

  • New in 1.2: PVP Commendation Changes

    With the release of the 1.2 Legacy patch, BioWare has swept away most of the PvP commendations you spent hours collecting. Mercenary, Centurion, Champion and Battlemaster Commendations have been phased out, in favor of a new commendation system that almost-exclusively emphasizes Warzone Commendations. Furthermore, endgame PvP now has a new type of commendation, Ranked Warzone Commendations, to contend with.   • Codex Guide: Tython

    The in-game Codex entries are a novel and interesting way to gain a fair amount of experience for a character, as well as to learn a great deal more about the worlds, people, creatures and places in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Beginning this week, DarthHater will be offering a deeper, planet-by-planet look into the Codex series to provide current guides for unlocking each of the codices within SWTOR. We begin on Tython, the most recent Jedi homeworld and a planet with a rich and rather complicated history as it pertains to the Force. Next time we’ll take a closer look at Korriban, home of the Sith Empire and a trove of many entries concerning the darker aspects of the Force. Read on after the jump for a complete walkthrough.

  • Guide: Update 1.3 Primer

    With Game Update 1.3 looming on the horizon, players of Star Wars: The Old Republic can once again expect to see numerous changes and additions made to various game systems. Though it is not likely to be a content-heavy patch, there are many significant upgrades coming to Crew Skills, Augmentation functionality and much more. While the Group Finder tool is potentially the most anticipated feature of this patch, there are sure to be a lot of other changes to enjoy, including many quality-of-life improvements.   • New in 1.2: Sniper/Gunslinger Change Analysis

    Among the most influential components of Game Update 1.2 were the balance changes made to nearly every Advanced Class within Star Wars: The Old Republic. Some, such as the Sage and Sorcerer received changes from top to bottom while others received no functional tweaks at all, like the Shadow and Assassin. The Sniper and Gunslinger pairing falls somewhere in between those two extremes; while they established a few much needed alterations the overall playstyle and ability flow remained intact.   • Bioanalysis Node Guide: Nar Shaddaa

    Given that a greater amount of players are now level 50 and spending additional time with Crew Skills, maps and guides to gathering node locations are becoming more important. When starting new alts to farm gathering materials for Crew Skills, resource maps can be extremely useful in speeding the rate of acquisition for raw components. Our intention is to begin assisting the hunting-gathering player base with a means of locating and identifying all known nodes on each planet. For our fourth installment, we cover the Bioanalysis nodes of Nar Shaddaa.

  • Crowd Control: The Battle of the Sexes

    Once a week the Senior Editor at Darth Hater locks all of the interns into a closet. They’re provided a laptop, as much caffeine as their frail bodies can handle and access to a treasure trove of survey data collected monthly from our readership. Their assignment: uncover insightful correlations between the players of Star Wars: The Old Republic and their gaming habits. The interns are reminded of this task every 42 seconds via mild shock treatments and left to their work. For the third straight week, we're pleased to report all interns have emerged largely unharmed. More importantly, their analysis has revealed a number of interesting differences in the dynamics between men’s and women’s approach to the game.   • Open Forum: UI

    With Game Update 1.2’s release, players are now able to modify their UI to suit their needs. While most of the crucial elements are changeable, some want more. In this week’s Open Forum, we highlight the UI. Did the UI meet your needs? What areas do you think BioWare could improve on? Where would you like to see it go long term?
