Lets Roll

We all know and love being able to get from point A to point B as fast as possible, but how will we do it? Will we be walking halfway across a planet to reach the remote and dangerous encounter? Will we have a handy dandy speeder to zip there in no time? Will we have a ship with atmospheric flight to go even faster? All are possible with the models we have seen, but what will be our options?

Best bet for transit is our handy dandy speeder. It creates the iconic feel of the movies without having to deal with skipping over content as atmospheric flight would do. After all, Luke didnt run on foot to Old Ben's and then to Mos Eisley. You also didnt see the Melinium Falcon take off and fly 2 miles so Han could reach his target. He would land at the local town and then would use short range transportation to reach his target. The only way I could see no transportation options when on land would be if the worlds are the size of KotOR, but that would mean hundreds of worlds would be needed for the scale of an MMO. We will just need to wait and see how transportation plays out in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

I'd love to see a speeder bike, or if Bioware loves us, a speeder like Luke's that can hold companions or party members.

If they have Luke's speeder with party members, I want Jabba's with a party that can watch the executions of prisoners.

Imagine if some city-planet like Coruscant or Nar Shadaa was in the game, and the main mode of transportation was long elevators like in Mass Effect. :P

"Brb, just took the elevator, I'll be down to you in 5 minutes."

Kinda like the tram in WoW? Or more of a cutscene like KotOR?

the cutscene irritated me to no end.
kinda took the 'big world' feeling out of it for me.
    like 'oh! we're here already.'

Atmospheric flight would kick ass, but I'll be happy with the regular old land speeder/speeder-bike.

(I know, I'm bringing SWG up again, but it fits so well in my examples)

In SWG pre-speeders and mounts the community was much closer post-speeders and mounts. I never took much notice until years after the fact but when I tried to go back and try to figure out why the community changed, I then realized it was the introduction of them. They also had the added negative effect on server lag =/

When we had to do everything on foot, we relied on staying in groups to protect us from the things (night-sisters come to mind) we could just by-pass on the speeders and mounts.

That being said, I hope there are restrictions to where we can use the speeders if they are introduced. Like I don't want to be able to use them indoors or probably in cities, depending on how they are set up.

As cool as transportation is, I prefer the instant mapping technique. Forming groups is already an arduous process. Having to travel to get to a group just makes it worse.

This is mainly because I'm a Guild Wars geek. Yes, you can all throw tomatoes at me now.

The problem with Instant Mapping is that it makes the world feel a lot smaller. Guild Wars' continents are supposed to feel huge, but teleporting around everywhere instantly makes it feel a lot smaller. The same thing kinda happens in WoW with Flightpaths and Epic Flying Mounts. You can get around so much faster, the world itself feels smaller since you're zipping around it a lot faster than you usually do. As is, many of us here probably feel like even Speeders would take you around zones too fast(since we don't really know how big the zones are).

You can always dual-boot into Windows with Mac's Boot Camp feature. :)
  • #9 sado
Bootcamp was made for this game ;)

^ The way Bioware put it.

Devs have basically told us that it won't in a round about way but they might cave.

I think thas one of the few things that SWG got right was the speeders, though I think they went overboard with the different types. Speeders are a major staple of Star Wars and a lack of them would be a major detriment to the mechanics of an MMO of this scale. As to atmospheric flight I'm not to sure, it would be fast yes, but like it was mentioned before you would miss alot, plus the number of people that would be up there would clutter things so bad that it makes it seemingly unviable as an option. I think speeders of single and mutli-passenger types are the best bet, with a planet wide shuttle system like SWG to get from major cities or spaceports to the smaller towns.

I would like flight to be restricted to land at spaceports only, and be able to go anywhere with your speeder
  • #2 nevi
I personally would like to see both land and full atmospheric flight available, and I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be available. One thing I've noticed about Bioware's development of TOR and other games, is that they're extremely innovative. So I doubt we'll be disappointed when it comes to transportation.
In my opinion many games, specificly World of Warcraft, have made giving the player a real choice in how they'll travel a staple in any mmo from here on out. I think we'll see not only your basic land speeder, but maybe even small shuttles, banthas, cannoks, and swoop bikes.

oh yeah. trooper on a dewback = awesome.

As long as it feels Star Warsy I am happy. If they do something like Force Flight it would be too much CoH, even if it is a real force power.
