Lore Update: Sluis Van

Here at Darth Hater we love to pry into the nuts and bolts of every piece of information released about Star Wars: The Old Republic. This hunger for information leads us to learn a great deal about the history and lore of the Star Wars Universe as a whole, and we love nothing more then to share that with you. To continue that trend, here is a closer look at one of the more interesting planets mentioned in the recent Onslaught of the Sith Empire Timeline video: Sluis Van.

History

Over the course of the video we learn that Sluis Van, along with other nearby planets, was attacked during the early stages of the Great Galactic War, and its vital shipyards paid the price. This is important because Sluis Van is the primary planet of the Sluis Sector and one of the most prominent locations in that area of the galaxy. Located along the Rimma Trade Route, Sluis Van is an important resource for anyone wishing to control the resources of the Minos Cluster. The planet is so strategically significant enough that its defended by multiple battle stations, making the Sith's actions all the more impressive.

The planet itself is covered by barren terrain and intricate industrial complexes, and is home to a sentient species called the Sluissi. The Sluissis anatomy is unique in that the lower half of their body is serpentine, while the torso and arms resemble a reptilian humanoid. They are known for their space faring technology which is on par with the Duros and Humans. The Sluissi are renowned for their skills at building starships so it is not surprising that their homeworld became the perfect location for a near legendary space dock. Sluissi do venture offworld and are usually seen taking jobs as tech-specialists, engineers, and mechanics, however they are known to partake in various other trades.

This unique species is also infamous for never showing any distress or anger; they always appear to be in a state of calm, inner relaxation. This trait creates problems for the sociable creatures as it is confusing to other species. Their perpetual calm nature and etiquette will even occasionally cause other species to misinterpret their intents, leading to unwarranted aggression.

Sluis Van is known for maintaining strong ties to the Republic, stretching back to the earliest years of the Republic. This steadfast connection lasted many thousands of years until they seceded just before the start of the Clone Wars. To say that the planet is important is putting it lightly. Combined with the Minos Cluster's resources, the Rimma Trade Route, and the shipyards it has always made Sluis Van a planet worth seeking by both factions.

Speculation & Conclusion

Sulis Van possessed an impressive shipyard that evidently supplied numerous ships to the Republic war effort. Interestingly enough, the Emperor decided to destroy the docks surrounding Sulis Van, instead of capturing and using them to produce warships. Although Sulis Van's role in Star Wars: The Old Republic hasn't been specified completely, it is evident that such a planet would be hotly contested. The Emperor's use of scare tactics in the destruction of the shipyards could not only provide those on Sulis Van that would bend to his will and seek to insure their planet's future survival, but it could also cause numerous factions to be created that would desire the Sith's annihilation and removal from their planet. It would be simple for players to be capable of choosing a side in order to push for one side's domination over the other.

Since Sulis Van houses many industrial complexes with which the Emperor could mass produce munitions and battle droids, the Republic would then deem it necessary to insure that such factories would not be capable of being used by the Sith and could instead be used by the Republic. If such an event were to unfold on Sulis Van's surface, a literal battlefield would be draw with which players could participate to guarantee their side victory in the ongoing battle across the galaxy. One thing is for certain, however, Bioware can only seek to amaze us with the story and culture that continues to develop in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

That picture from the timeline looks a lot like Kuat (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kuat). Kuat sector is mentioned in the comic as well and also known for its shipyards. Either way, I predict Sluis Van or Kuat to be a planet in-game.

I'm wondering if space combat will involve only battling over "landable" planets, so my conclusion for this planet is: Space Combat Area Baby!!!

Would be pretty cool to see that in-game. Would've loved to visit those destroyed factories though. From the looks of things the lore enables open world pvP on almost every planet with the exception of the starting ones. Thats great imo ;)

Thanks for the update, guys! you're awesome :)

Love how you lot are like three times as active as swtor.com. Personally my hype has gone from 'omg omg omg exited' to simply following events while I play WoW again, and I've even caught myself peeking at DarthHater before actually visiting swtor.com on a friday. ;)

A little thing from KOTOR: We've occasionally visited a planet's spacestation BEFORE actually going to the planet itself (Telos). Perhaps if this planet is released, we'll be able to snoop out those half-wrecked shipyards? Because they look awesome!
