E3: Cinematic Trailer: "Hope" Dissected

To kick off the start of E3 BioWare showcased their new cinematic trailer, "Hope." Since BioWare seemingly never releases content without gameplay hints or marketing designs inside their message, it is appropriate to dissect. Below you will find what we saw and thought and for now, without pictures to ease the load on the site.

  • 1:28- Trooper fires green lasers with two-handed gun, contrary to the normal red, perhaps indicates the modifiers last seen in the combat video dissection.

  • 1:33- Grenade launcher confirmed as a possible weapon choice for Trooper?

  • 1:40 - Malgus uses a Force Pull ability

  • 1:56 - Malgus, a Sith Warrior, using Force Lightning

  • 1:59- Trooper seemed to be able to resist the Force Lightning and actually press forward, attempting to attack with a knife.

  • 2:34 - Sith wearing a mask, perhaps an indication of end-game gear

  • 2:40 - Jedi Consular using Force Repulse (or something similar) and it only affects enemy targets, not friendly

  • 2:49 - Jedi Consular using a staff lightsaber, lightsaber engravings

  • 3:19 - Jedi Consular using the force to affect the environment (tree)

  • 3:35 - Lightsaber snaps in half, and general damage to armor of main characters hints at an equipment damage/repair system

  • 3:39 - Jedi Consular seemingly solidifying Malgus' lightsaber (you can see the cracks) and the lightsaber isn't passing through her hand

  • 3:41 - The lightsaber Malgus is using has an unusual extension that covers part of the lightsaber at the base

  • 3:52 - The grenade explosion is blue, non-lethal at close range. Is it the cryoban genade we have seen before in the combat video dissection?

  • 4:02 - Malgus' armor blackened and severly damaged from grenade explosion (perhaps wear & tear on gear is visible)

  • 4:17 - Jedi Consular using charged up Force Push

  • 4:19 - Force powers affecting the environment again (rocks) similar to what we noticed in the combat video dissection.

:46 Bounty Hunter flies in to join the group.
Possible mode of transport? Possible "call companion" ability in use?

I would like to add that it wasn't a charged up force push, but a force burst. The description of burst fits the action perfectly.

The cracking of the lightsaber could also be due to cryokinesis, or absorb energy.

As cool as the trailer was, I'm willing to give BioWare a pass if the end gameplay doesn't deliver on all of these promises. The environmental effects in particular, since we have yet to see them done well in a single player game rather than an online one.

Right now I'll be more than happy if it's "Star Wars WOW, minus the grindy BS, as imagined by BioWare".

Awesome job with this, I never noticed the lightsaber cracking.. That's pretty weird to me.

"3:39 - Jedi Consular seemingly solidifying Malgus' lightsaber (you can see the cracks) and the lightsaber isn't passing through her hand"

I never saw the cracks before! Can it possibly be cortosis gloves she's wearing (that has a higher share of cortosis than a cortosis weave, due to the fact that the lightsaber blade seems to be falling apart)?
I originally just thought she were using a Force power, but those cracks made me unsure.

I was thinking the same. She is solidifying the lightsaber, but the question is how? I was thinking about an unknown force power.

visible wear and tear on armor would be amazing.

Straightforward dissection. I also wrote up my own dissection here

A few of the additional observations I made:
    - The structure burning at the beginning of the trailer matches up with a concept art of Castle Organa
    - Speculated on trooper companions (demolitions expert and scout/recon expert?)
    - Combat knife, haven't seen the trooper use a melee weapon yet
    - The ambush shows the importance of using the environment to your advantage, also how the z-axis will not be ignored
    - "Full Auto" skill in use by one of the troopers
    - Havoc Squad Commander giving commands, visually and verbally
    - Commander draws the combat knife when getting fried... and some of the lightning gets attracted to the knife. Possibly counter for lightning, use an item as a lightning rod.
    - Consular is clearly overpowered by Malgus when dueling him. This portrays the Consular's average dueling technique and her focus/strength in Force powers instead. In addition, Consular wears light armor and displays acrobatic maneuvers.
    - About stopping the saber, the Consular could be displaying a "Force Absorb" skill too. I also noticed the saber solidifying. The skill either way appears to have a high cost. The Consular gets some breathing room via the trooper's charge with grenade. Possibly suggests a cooldown period / penalty for using that skill.
    - Thought the Commander's last grenade was more like a stun or concussion grenade, leaning towards stun. I believe stun has the blue color to it. Cyroban grenade is meant to slow down / freeze.
    - "Force Wave" is one possibility for the Consular's final Force power, appears to have a channeling time too.

I don't think the grenade used against Malgus was a cryo-nade. I thought it was an ion grenade.

Wow. I didn't even notice the cracks in the lightsaber. I was always focused on the Jedi's hands, and how she could stop a lightsaber.
That's really weird, I never imagined a lightsaber could be "solidified" or something. I looked at the video again, and yes it does start cracking. It should also be noted that the lightsaber turned darker at the parts where it was cracking.

As far as the grenade goes, there is a large discussion on the trooper forums, trying to decide what kind of explosion it is.

I personally don't think it is a cyroban grenade... because cyroban grenades freeze targets, not burn them.

I narrowed it down to stun or concussion grenade. I'll copy in here my reasoning for this from that thread:

    Concussion grenade(physical type):
"a fairly standard grenade, used by many factions. It exploded with a small blast radius, releasing a blast of kinetic energy that would kill most organics and damage equipment. A sonic shockwave was expelled in the explosion that stunned anyone right outside the 4 meter blast radius."

It has a small radius, which makes sense when looking at the video, because the grenade in the trailer only has a 4-5 meter blast radius. It also damages equipment, which we can also see.... the only thing is that the trooper isn't stunned, but rather tossed back a fairly long distance.

    Stun Grenade:
"These weapons were small, weighed 0.5 kgs, and had a blast radius of roughly 4 meters. Mercenary units, local law enforcement, and military personnel were known to use them. These grenades were designed to explode on impact and could knock out individuals caught within the blast radius from the concussive force released."

Blast radius makes sense. Military had access to them. And they would explode (causing the burning dmg) and knock back (can be presumes MAlgus was stronger then the trooper so he could hold his ground)
The only problem with this is it states it explodes on impact. I can imagine that this can be modified however, depending on what type of people use it (military, special forces, mercenary, bounty hunter, etc). Seeing as how all these types of ppl would use it for different reasons, i dont think modifying them is unimaginable

Also a picture of the explosion is similar to what we see in the trailer (3:53)
    http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091107055856/starwars/images/b/b7/StunGrenade.jpg

Honestly i think it could go either way. I looked through every grenade type listed on Wookiepedia, and these were the 2 that made most sense.. Due to the picture of the Stun Grenade though, i am slightly leaning towards the stun over the concussion.

Destructible environments was my major takeaway from the trailer.

    My fingers are crossed.

That thought never crossed my mind. Good idea!

After watching the new trailer 7 or 800 times, I seem to notice a faintly blueish aura around the consular's hands. It appears to me it is some form of force barrier, and she is in fact not blocking it barehanded. But then again at this point i havent slept for 2ish days and have quintuple vision. I thought I saw a wookie playing pazzak in there once or twice. But the lightsaber thing did stand out. Cheers Hater-crew. Glad you're on point for SW:TOR fanbase there! We're all with ya in spirit!

just gonna throw out the possibility that the female jedi is Aryn Leneer mentioned in the dramatis personae of the upcoming Malgus novel, eventhough the cinematic shows her as a (presumably) consular and the novel states otherwise.

also the grenade appears to be a flash bang. if you look on wookiepedia the flash bang and thermal detonator look very similar. the flash is similar to what a photonic explosion would look like and the close proximity of the explosion to the combatants could explain the minor damage they receive (with their armor taking most of the damage).
