Lore Update: Corellia

Corellia is conspicuously missing from the announced planets in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but its long, rich history, and pivotal role in many of the galaxy's political turning points make it a very strong candidate for a future reveal. Aside from serving as the galaxy's focal point for starship design, development and construction, Corellian natives were responsible for the initial Human discovery of the hyperdrive, and the planet is also included among the original founders of the Galactic Republic. The fascinating thing about Corellia and its brother planets is that none of them are native to Corell, the star they orbit around, having been dragged through hyperspace by Celestials using the nearby Centerpoint Station and placed into an artificial orbit. Read on to learn about Corellia's history and our reasons why we feel it will be revealed as a planet in The Old Republic.
Corellia

The planet of Corellia is part of the Corellian system, also inhabited by brother worlds Selonia, Drall, Talus, and Tralus. The five planets orbit around the star Corell, and collectively are known as the Five Brothers. Corellia, Selonia, and Drall all orbit the star, while Talus and Tralus orbit Centerpoint Station, which itself orbits the star. All five planets contained within their cores an enormous planetary repulsor, a device that gave each planet the ability to move itself through space. The planet Corellia served as a slave world of the Infinite Empire, providing a portion of the labor force used to build the Star Forge. Corellia is especially known for the discovery of the modern hyperdrive, which provided a means of communication with other Core Worlds, and eventually led to the creation of the Galactic Republic, of which Corellia is a Core Founder. During the Old Republic era, Corellia, its star system, and the rest of the systems in the Corellian sector are ruled by the Corellian Empire, an absolute monarchy ruled by the House of Solo. Corellia has always been known as a fiercely independent culture, managing their own system-wide security in the form of the Corellian Security Force, or CorSec, and even harboring their own, non-traditional Corellian Jedi.

The Corellian system serves as one of the three largest starship manufacturers in the galaxy. The Corellian Engineering Corporation was established around the same time as the Galactic Republic, and currently operates most of the shipyards in orbit around Corellia and its brother worlds. The Rendili Vehicle Corporation, a ship design and production company, has a facility on Corellia, and is responsible for developing the Vanguard-class starfighter. A Rendili corporate building was the setting of Rob Chestney's Old Republic era short story, Smuggler's Vanguard, in which Mirialan smuggler Hylo Visz steals the first Vanguard prototype. With Corellia's long history with starships, it comes as no surprise that Corellia is the homeworld of many of the galaxy's greatest pilots. Smuggling is also a prominent profession among native Corellians.

The Corellian system also happens to be home to one of the galaxy's oldest and most dangerous superweapons. The Celestials supposedly constructed Centerpoint Station around 1,000,000 BBY. It draws its power from the gravity wells of its nearest neighbors, Talus and Tralus, and is capable of several incredibly frightening feats. On its own, it can create a gravity well surrounding the entire system, blocking hyperspace travel in and out. The station was also built to work in tandem with the planetary repulsors on each of the five Corellian worlds, which would allow it to create gravity wells anywhere in or perhaps even around the entirety of the galaxy. Perhaps its most shocking characteristic, the station is able to combine its many systems to create a kind of hyperspace tractor beam able to grip large objects, even stars, from a considerable distance and manipulate them in the vastness of space. The tractor beam could also be made to fluctuate, and when targeted at a star could cause the star's core to become unstable and eventually go supernova. During the Old Republic era, Centerpoint Station's true nature and origin are still unknown, leaving many opportunities to explore its twisted insides.

The planet itself is known for its vast expanses of rural landscape with spotted urban centers located at various points around the globe. Many natural wonders adorn the planet's surface, such as the vibrantly beautiful Gold Beaches, or the always-majestic vistas at Kor Vella, a popular tourist destination. Hylo Visz comments in Smuggler's Vanguard that Corellia's ship manufacturing corporations are partly responsible for the planet's unspoiled beauty. Since most of the shipyards are outside of the planet's atmosphere, a large percentage of the landscape is only sparsely inhabited by sentient species. After the Old Republic era, it is known that immigrant Selonians from nearby Selonia built a massive network of caves and tunnels beneath the planet's surface known as the Selonian Tunnels. Many species used these spaces as a sort of underground metropolis.

Corellia's storied history and importance within the galaxy puts a lot of weight behind the theory of it being one of The Old Republic's planets. With the introduction of customizable player ships, and especially space combat, Corellia's ship design and production aptitude thrust it into the spotlight of potential story opportunities. One of the galaxy's prime trade routes during the era, the Corellian Run, passes right through the system, making it at least as easy to get to as the other revealed core worlds. Corellia's focus in Smuggler's Vanguard also tells us that the planet is square in the sights of BioWare's key writers, and its sparse-at-best history during the early Galactic Republic leaves it wide open for fictional exploration.

Also, I wonder if we can CorSec gear. That would be awesome.

Good to see Cor. in game as a true planet. I though for awhile that they might have put it in an instance.

I personally think that corellia will be in swtor for a few key reason. One of course is the sheet music for the world. I don't think they would make music for a world and not put it in, and second of all If u look at some of info on some of the timeline videos that have yet to be released it says "The development of the HyperDrive expanded the known Galaxy" and that ties in extremely well with corellia. So with all these factors i think its safe to say it is going to be in the game as a planet

In the beginning of SWG all the major cities were well occupied with player, just the longer the game last the less player actually used the cities since they didn't need them anymore due their private houses.

Anyway Correllia had very nice scenic views and was one of the favourites.

House Organa, House Solo... I beginning to see a trend here. ;)

Awesome write-up Orionark. Hopefully we'll see this planet revealed soon, I'm looking forward to seeing BioWare's visualisation of it in-game.

One minor setback, if they DO reveal Corellia and maybe even the Centerpoint Station tomorrow (the station is supposed to be larger than the first Death Star), the Star Wars wiki says CS wasn't "first seen" until 18 ABY. I'm not sure how accurate that is but it seems it would require Bioware to orchestrate a small retcon. Possibly though if the CS is really that enormous...they may not even put it in the game and just may stick to the planet itself. I'm guessing it would take too much work to add a space station of that size in the game at least at launch.

Seeing Corellia ruled by an independent empire (House of Solo eh?) would be different and definitely gives the devs a ton of options. There also isn't much known about the Empire itself which fits into Bioware's style of taking something with little lore and expanding it.

The information on the wiki is a little...odd to say the least. If you read the Later History section on the wiki page it says a librarian from Theed had known about it around 1 ABY, and the next sentence simply says that the only new discovery in 18 ABY was the station's use as a weapon, not the station itself.

There's also not much information on Talus and Tralus out there during the Old Republic era, but it's hard to imagine that since the humans discovered the hyperdrive around 25,000 BBY that they hadn't visited and maybe even colonized them by that point, during which they'd probably notice the big, metal object that they orbit around.

Watch http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/starwarstheoldrepublic/video/6268560/composing-the-music-of-star-wars-the-old-republic towards the end you can see on one of the music sheets reads "Theme for Corellia". At least thats what I saw anyway. On the Darth Hater Episode 44 podcast the guys pointed out why would Corellia have a theme if its not in the game. Maybe it was a hint for us uber nerds out there or I saw something I wanted to see.

A little Force foresight? Well, I hope so at least...

Really enjoyable read. Full marks to the author. Well done.
(and thank-you for all the links... I always enjoy those too.)

Seems, more than likely, that the find made on the sheet music is only the intro to the ship of the same name and not the planet. While I would enjoy seeing the planet as it is a major player in the galactic scene, just going by the information we have seen that is my guess.

What ship are you talking about? And as Elkesai says, I find it hard to believe that a ship is called Corellia.

I don't listen to the podcasts, but thanks DH and Shas_Zaret that made me look this up! :D
I just saw the video again, and in the middle of it, there was a clear view of "Corellia intro (of) Corellia bkgma_03" on the "sheet" thingy. I could be completely wrong, but "bkgma" could stand for background music #a_03.
Either way, you just convinced me that Corellia will be in the game. :)

EDIT: I think it's "bkgrnd_03", which could mean "background_03". I'm not sure how much you have discussed in your podcasts about what this stands for, but, well.... Hate on!

I think he was referring to the Corellian-made ship the Jedi use.

I think it highly likely Corellia is in, but if not the planet, then surely as a space combat zone, or, at the very least, a space staion in orbit.
  • #11 Elkesai
Possibly. But didn't the sheet music say Corellia? It's possible that it means the ship, but the ship is not "Corellia," it's "Corellian," leading me to believe it may quite possibly be more.
  • #24 LethalSharpshooter
Also, the music would've been named "Vanguard" if something.
