Players will be able to choose from many different species in Star Wars: The Old Republic. We currently do not know if this choice will change how the game is played, but learning about these galactic residents might help some people pick the avatar that fits their personality and play style best. Join us in taking a closer look at the Zabrak, a fierce and powerful species that stands on both sides of the faction divide.
The Zabrak are a proud and focused race. Recognized mostly by their cranial horns and elaborate tattoos, the Zabrak also hold renown for their will and indomitable determination. Their fierce self-confidence and strength to achieve led them to be one of the first space-faring races in the galaxy. While separated into various clans, much like the Mandalorians, the whole of the Zabrak culture feels a strong sense of pride in their species. The Zabrak hail from the planet Iridonia in the mid rim, though many clans have migrated to other systems. Each subculture evolved different personalities and traits, but those that remained on Iridonia are known for being the strongest and most war-like.
The pride and strength of being Zabrak is taught from an early age, with children growing up around martial arts training alongside regular schooling. Once at the age of puberty, their trademark horns grow in and the time for their rite of passage arrives. Known as "res Selenoren" (or "the Challenges"), the child's parents craft various tasks the youngster must complete within three months, ending with a social trial at an annual celebration known as the "Rising Festival". It is at this festival that, upon recognition for their completion of the rites, a young Zabrak is given his or her facial tattoos and celebrated as a fully fledged adult of the clan. The Tattoos are chosen to represent any aspect of the individual Zabrak's life including family, origin, or their own personal nature.
The Zabrak hold a long history in the galaxy, not only in Republic politics and relations (their home-world being a major hub for Hyperspace lanes), but also with the Sith. Originally just providing mercenary services to the ancient faction, the Zabrak race never officially aligned themselves with the Sith. However, their sense of self determination and strength often leads individuals to their ranks, being the perfect breed for some of the most rigorous trials of the Sith order. This link is so strong that a Sith training academy once existed on Iridonia itself.
However during the time of the Jedi Civil war, most Clans tended to side with the Republic, though this was kept secret during Iridonia's several Sith occupations. The homeworld was often fought over, being such a strategic point in the hyperspace lanes. The colonies eventually broke away after the fighting ended to become their own worlds and societies.
The Zabrak culture has a long history of achievements and advancements. Their sense of pride and duty to their own culture ensures them a formidable place in the galaxy for many years to come. Individual Zabrak's often show up in very important roles, fighting for both good and evil. Societies and powers would do well to never underestimate the Zabrak race.
