Faction Lore: Jedi Council

The grandeur of being a Jedi Knight is one of the most alluring and respected callings in the entire galaxy. Children want to be them; adults thank the Force for them. Jedi Masters -- particularly those on the Jedi Council -- are even more revered.
The High Council

The Jedi High Council consists of twelve Jedi Masters who serve as advisers to the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, and hold meetings in the Southeast tower of the Jedi Temple. Roughly 1050 BTC, Jedi Masters gathered in assembly and created the hierarchy of the Jedi Order. By 359 BTC, the Jedi established a High Council, and Nomi Sunrider soon became the leader of the Jedi after the defeat of Exar Kun in the Great Sith War.

The High Council is the leading body and principal council of the Jedi Order but they are only one of four which date back to the Old Republic era. Satele Shan is the Grand Master of the Jedi Council in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Council of First Knowledge

The Council of First Knowledge was a five Master member council which met in the Northwest tower within the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. The leader of this council was the Caretaker of First Knowledge. They had many different responsibilities but overall it was the preservation (and sometimes eradication) of knowledge.

It was the Council of First Knowledge who took it upon themselves to extinguish all Sith artifacts and teachings from the galaxy. They were in charge of maintaining the Temple Archives and supervised the Jedi Academy to fulfill their responsibility of preserving knowledge.

In order for the Jedi to continue to learn, knowledge of the inner workings of the Force and the galaxy needed to grow. This is why it was imperative that the same council oversaw the Jedi academy and the knowledge, which was contained in the archives.

Council of Reassignment

Like First Knowledge, the Council of Reassignment contained five Jedi Masters who met in the Northeast tower of the Jedi Temple. Their primary responsibility was overseeing the Jedi Service Corps, which consisted of Agricultural Corps, the Exploration Corps, the Educational Corps and the Medical Corps.

In some cases, Jedi were sent here as an alternative after failing to pass their initiate trials. The Council of Reassignment watched students closely, and reassignment would come to Padawans if they were unable to pass their initiate trials or the Force did not lend its creed to them to become Jedi Knights. However, it was not rare for Jedi Knights and Masters alike to serve a rotation in the Corps.

Council of Reconciliation

Meeting in the Southwest tower of the Jedi Temple, the Council of Reconciliation consisted of five Master Consulars whose primary obligation was to negotiate with political factions. Three members of this council rotated on a five year term while the other two sat for life. Members of this council could also serve on one of the other councils simultaneously.

One of the first known members of this council was the female Miraluka Sabla-Mandibu. The Jedi Order published a book titled The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force, and she authored several chapters.

Councils not on Coruscant

As witnessed in Knights of the Old Republic, a Jedi Council does not have to meet on Coruscant. Throughout the history of the Jedi, academies sprung up on worlds across the galaxy. Dantooine was the planet in which an amnesia-ridden Revan learned the ways of the Force for a second time.

Before the Mandalorian Wars 311 BTC, a rogue Council on Taris that sought the resurrection of the Sith murdered Jedi Padawans they were training. They were previously a subservient council to the Dantoonie enclave.

After the Treaty of Coruscant, and during the time of Star Wars: The Old Republic, the Jedi Council is located on Tython. As the Republic has done in the past and will do in the future, they lay much of the blame with the Jedi. This was why it was prudent for the Jedi to relocate and rediscover the birthplace of the Order.

Jedi Council's role in The Old Republic

It would seem unlikely that you would have no contact with the High Council as a Jedi character in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The real questions might be: how and who?

We previously reported your early levels will lead you to the Jedi Temple on Tython to observe conversations involving the Grand Master, Satele Shan. We don't know if the Council room will be regularly accessible outside of similar cut scenes or story elements. What about the other three councils of the Jedi Order? The story possibly may provide encounters with or even helping one of the Service Corps divisions. The Jedi Archives and the Council of First Knowledge could easily come into play, as released game play footage has already hinted at the search for Force artifacts.

As for the Council of Reconciliation, it would be a light side Consular's duty to negotiate first and draw their saber second. Politics have always been an overwhelming part of Star Wars from the movies to the Expanded Universe. These could be the five masters a Jedi Consular most identifies with during their game play experience.

The Jedi Council is the light in a dark galaxy, far far away. Whether you are with them, against them, or planning to betray them, the Jedi Council is not a force to cross lightly.

"Before the Mandalorian Wars 311 BTC, a rogue Council on Taris that sought the resurrection of the Sith murdered Jedi Padawans they were training. They were previously a subservient council to the Dantoonie enclave."
wait, what? they sought to PREVENT the resurrection you mean?

no, they WANTED the Sith to return, hence why they were rogue Jedi.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. The support I received from the community writing the articles I was able to produce was very, very nice. I appreciate all the readership and the comments I received the last few months. I'll see you guys in game. ;)

Another nice lore update, and again I learned something new. I have never before heard about these other Jedi councels. Will be interesting to see if they appear in the game, although I will not see them for a long time, until I start playing the Republic side, I guess. :-)

I know that the Jedi Council has relocated to Tython, and the temple on Coruscant was ruined, but will we be able to still visit the temple and walk around it. Do the Jedi Order still have a nominal presence there?

I know the Sith have the old SIth lords who act like ghosts and sometimes manifest into spirits.... so i have a 2 part question... do the Sith have a "council".... and does the Jedi council ever look to past council members for guidance?
  • #12 DarthShnooky
There is a council for the Sith called the Dark Council. I believe BW has basically set it up that the Emperor is not necessarily involved in day-to-day activities of the Empire. He's meditating on the Force and the Future and planning the larger, overall moves for the Empire, while the Dark Council actually runs the thing.

It probably sets up potential conflict within the Empire where the Council may want to overthrow the Emperor, at least on some level, or individual Council members may want to find a way to become a new Emperor themselves.

I believe there is a "Council of Sith Lords", yes, but they are mostly subservient to the Emperor. I don't believe they'd look to past council members for guidance, as Sith tradition is usually "the strongest survive" and if those previous members were dead, it would mean they had failed. Besides, the Sith are very proud and would believe they know everything that a dead council member could ever teach them anyway.
Add to that the fact that most Sith Ghosts are usually acting out of their own selfish needs and agendas, and you can see why no prior communication is made by the Sith Council.
As for the Jedi, wasn't Qui-gon the first one to ever be able to "cross" the path back from the Force? I need to research this, obviously, as I am just going by what Yoda had said.

I like the Lore - I need to learn more - this will be helpful in enjoying / understanding the game on release.

Everytime I read one of these, my anticipation level increases a bit. I can't wait to play this game and to experience these types of things for myself.

Why is it every time I learn more about the Lore does it make me really consider my choice of being a Sith Warrior at launch. Now I'm very curious how the Consular's story is tied to all these separate councils. Maybe we'll be chosen to join 1 of the councils or even the main council. Maybe expose some evil treachery going on and bring the order back to the light. I could drown myself thinking of all the possibilities. Great lore post guys I wish you guys did more regularly.

Great info and really enjoyed the overall tone and quality of the article. These lore articles are a nice way to expand the site when actual info about the game is in short supply (ie. right now).

If i could make a few "editorial" comments about the article just to give a li'l constructive criticism. Two things i noticed on reading it:

    1. You might spell out BTC the first time you use it. So the second paragraph would read "Roughly 1050 Before Treaty of Coruscant (BTC)..." then use "BTC" afterward. I wasn't sure what the notation meant, and I probably wasn't the only one unsure of it. Just a li'l style note that you might consider.

    2. The next paragraph starts with, "The High Council is the leading body and principal council of the Jedi Order but they are only one of four which date back to the Old Republic era." I was unsure what "one of four" meant until reading the full article. Would've been clearer if you had said "The High Council is the leading body and principal council, but they are only one of four councils leading the Jedi Order in the Old Republic era." Just something i found confusing on initial read, and just wanted to give ya some feedback.

The content of the article, though, was great. I never knew there were other councils in charge of those other aspects of the Jedi. Makes sense though, considering all the Jedi were supposed to do in the Star Wars universe and the Old Republic.

Agreed, I had to run to Wookipedia to find out about BTC, although I should have known that already. LOL

I actually shared these same confusions, but the article was excellent overall. I enjoyed learning about the different councils. I originally thought there was only "The Jedi Council."
