Lore Update: Jedi Knight

If Jedi Consulars are the mind and shield of the Old Republic, Jedi Knights are the sword. They have long served on the front lines, dealing damage to opposing forces with speed and efficiency. They serve as guardians of peace and enforcers of Republic law, seeking out those who need aid and giving them justice without vengeance. This particular class of Jedi is often times seen as representative of all members of the Jedi Order, even though their techniques are quite different from their Jedi Consular brothers. Join us after the jump as we look at the iconic class of the Jedi Knight.
The Path of the Padawan

Beginning at an early age, Jedi Knight Padawans receive training to blend their body and mind together so that they can use both in conjunction with the Force to fight for peace in the Republic. After a minimum of ten years, a Padawan must complete a test known only as "The Jedi Trials" before ascending to knighthood. Each student receives their assignment either by his or her master or by the Jedi Council and the trials are different for each student.

Upon completion of her Jedi Trials, it is customary for a Padawan to construct her very own lightsaber, leaving behind their practice blade and picking up the symbol of the Jedi Order. This elegant weapon becomes an extension of the Jedi Knight; she uses elegant forms of combat (such as Juyo, Ataru, and Shii-Cho) to defeat her enemies. Using the Force to hurl it at a target, the Knight can even use the lightsaber from a distance.

Once a Jedi Knight completes training and builds a lightsaber, she begins to study specific aspects of her Jedi training. These advanced proficiencies allow her to specialize in certain skills and become either a Jedi Guardian or a Jedi Sentinel within the Order.

The Path of the Peacekeeper

Guardians are just what the name implies: a force standing between the citizens of the Republic and their enemies. Their heavy armor turns them into a living fortress that can be extremely hard to topple. They are known to utilize the Shien form to take down their opponents in close quarters with great force and speed and maintain the remarkable ability to use the Force to slow their enemies down during combat.

While not acting as Peacekeepers, Guardians tend to fill various roles within the Jedi Order. Those who are fascinated with the varying tools of war tend to become Exotic Weapons Specialists or Lightsaber Instructors. If a Jedi Knight finds himself staring at the stars and longing to visit each system in the cockpit of his own starfighter, he might become a Jedi Ace and fly with the Republic Navy.

The Path of the Aggressor

Opting for improved flexibility and acrobatics during combat, Sentinels tend to wear medium armor and study the artistry of wielding two lightsabers to inflict the maximum amount of destruction upon their foe. Using forms such as Juyo and Ataru, a Sentinel is generally perceived as being more aggressive than a typical Guardian. The Jedi Order, in particular, often sees Juyo as being dangerous to its practitioner due to the amount of raw emotion that one must put into the form's direct movements.

Sentinels also fill certain jobs within the Jedi Order. Jedi Investigators often work undercover to expose those who would do injustice throughout the galaxy. Some Sentinels choose to stay in a particular star system as a Jedi Watchman with a goal of improving and protecting its citizens' way of life. After the Jedi Civil War, the Jedi Order was in need of new Jedi to replenish their ranks. The Jedi Council sent out Sentinels as Jedi Recruiters to seek out young Force-sensitives and enlist them to their cause.

The Path to the Dark Side

Even though Jedi Knights are seen as guardians of peace, they are also often found fighting violently for that peace. This leads many to wonder where the boundary lies between the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force. Is it possible for Jedi Knights to fight aggression with violence and not touch the Dark Side? What actions does the Force see as inherently Light or Dark? Jedi Knights must explore every option before resorting to violence, or they risk slipping down the slope that lures so many Sith into its grasp.

I think this class rocks. Although just as is WOW, will they let us have multiple characters on the same account?

Has there been any word as to whether or not lightsaber forms will be included in TOR?

Here's a link to an article that talks about lightsaber forms, including which have been mentioned in what we know about the game so far:

JK's get forms, JC's don't. From what I gather, they're just "stances" from other games, i.e. a permabuff.

Not sure if it is consider part of the "lore" or not, but wasn't there something in the Jedi Apprentice series (young Obi-Wan) that if they were not chosen by a master (either master or knight) or if they were not strong enough in the force to pass the trials that they were sent off into the agriculture or medical corps?
  • #4 Kraxis
Yes. A Padawan that doesn't quite manage the trial is sent to AgriCorp or MediCorp. Same with the masterless Padawan that actually has managed the trial. The ones that utterly fail, are simply washed out.

However, it isn't clear when AgriCorp is established. It wouldn't be much of a surprise if the Order at this time doesn't really have the 'luxury' to send fairly competent Padawans to such a job.

The AgriCorp makes an appearance in "Red Harvest," which technically takes place between the "Deceived" and "Fatal Alliance" novels, so it is definitely around during "The Old Republic" story-line. Padawan Hestizo Trace, among others, served the Corp on Marfa before being kidnapped eight years after the Treaty of Coruscant.

It's unknown how large the Corp is at this point in history, but it is possible that it is rather small due to the fact that the Jedi found themselves to be in short supply after the First Jedi Purge.

And how great would it be if you are threatened at an early level, "If you don't complete this quest, you'll be sent of to Marfa to babysit some orchids!"

Hahaha, that would be great! A gruff and perhaps even semi-gray master would be perfect for this. Though I hold a specific place in my heart for a cold and distance Jedi Council. Satele Shan saying this would be the most rude shock!

Cool article, sign me up to be a Jedi Ace!

Another great article, Haters! Short and to the point. As always, these stoke my excitement for the game like you would not believe!
