Gamorreans have a certain reputation throughout the galaxy. Most people see them simply as large brutes with small brains. Unfortunately for the Gamorreans, this is not just a stereotype; it is reality. One of their green, thickset hunters summed it up best when he told another Gamorrean, You too stupid to even know you are stupid. Their place in the galaxy as physical laborers and enforcers stretches back centuries before the events in Star Wars: The Old Republic and they still have strong roots in the dark shadows of the galaxy's underworld.
Most sentient beings view the stocky bipeds as inferior creatures when compared to their own species, but shy away from trying to understand some of their more strange behaviors and traditions. For instance, Gamorreans have a close relationship with small, furry creatures native to their homeworld known as morrts. Morrts are parasites that Gamorreans keep as pets. However, unlike most domesticated animals, morrts are allowed to attach themselves to their master's hide and slowly suck blood from their host. Stranger still, the number of morrts that a Gamorrean collects on his person is seen as a status symbol within his clan.
Another aspect of Gamorrean life that appears primitive to outsiders is their clan society. Their homeworld of Gamorr is host to numerous clans that are not united under a single governing body. Each clan is lead by two individuals: a matron sow and her warlord boar. The matron oversees all clan business other than warfare, which is her mate's domain. Most boars do not die of natural causes, due to the constant clan wars and their habitual engagement in blood sport to impress available sows. Their short life-spans lead to continuous changes in the Gamorrean hierarchy, and males who can prove that they are mighty warriors have a chance to be picked as the matron's next spouse. An average female will have up to twelve mates over the course of her lifetime.
Sows also arrange mercenary contracts between the male members of their clan and outside organizations. Most of these contracts are made with criminal agencies due to the manner in which these deals are secured. Tradition mandates that anyone looking to hire a Gamorrean must first best them in a duel to first blood. If the prospective employer fails to defeat the boar in battle, he is unworthy of a contract in the Gamorreans' eyes. This practice also has the side affect of discouraging legitimate businesses from approaching the muscular warriors as potential employees.
A Gomorrean's imposing physique is accentuated by his choice of weapon. Brandishing a large Thogk club or a vibro-ax, his skills at melee combat are frightening to many space travelers. It is quite rare for a Gamorrean to wield a blaster when fighting another of his own species, but they have been known to use them when fighting against non-Gamorreans. Typically, females do not participate in battles, but if forced into a fight to protect family or clan, they can be just as formidable as their male counterparts.
Early records show that Gamorr was one of the many planets that the Rakata and their expanding Infinite Empire engulfed more than 30,000 years before the Treaty of Coruscant was signed. It is doubtful that their enslavement of the Gamorreans caused their brutish mannerisms towards off-worlders, but it certainly enhanced them. When traders arrived on Gamorr following the collapse of the Infinite Empire, Gamorrean clansmen approached the starship and lashed out at it with their bare hands and primitive weapons, hammering it beyond repair. This attack introduced the galaxy to the Gamorreans' physical strength, and many organizations took advantage of their fortitude, hiring them as guards and enforcers.
During the Jedi Civil War, many Gamorreans were hired by the Exchange as mercenaries and slave runners. One group captured a wookiee named Zaalbar, who frequented the Lower City before Taris' destruction. Unfortunately, the Gamorreans were not expecting the wookiee's companion, a young Twi'lek named Mission, to convince the Jedi Revan to help her rescue Zaalbar. Many of the Gamorreans holding Zaalbar hostage were slain by Revan and his allies during the escape.
Not all Gamorreans are employed as mercenaries. Some males strike out on their own to become hunters, tradesmen, or even swoop racers. Revan encountered a group of hunters when he visited Tatooine during his quest to stop Darth Malak from conquering the galaxy. Gurke, Narkal, and Ugzak lived on the desert planet with aspirations of becoming great Krayt dragon hunters. Unfortunately, hunting the great beasts was too difficult for them and they ended up falling back on killing and robbing other hunters who lost their way in the Dune Sea.
Vorn Daasrad was one of four Overseers of the GenoHaradan bounty hunter guild during the Jedi Civil War. During Revan's visit to Manaan, a member of GenoHaradan approached him and tried to convince him to kill Daasrad. There is conflicting evidence as to whether or not Revan took the offer, but the GenoHaradan seem to have diminished in the following years. Another marginally famous Gamorrean was Hukta Jax, who briefly held the fastest swoop racing record on the Manaan racetrack. Revan's racing skills easily defeated Jax's time and the Jedi even assisted another racer, Queedle Molto, in pushing the cocky Gamorrean racer down to third place.
Gamorreans are still used as hired muscle after the Treaty of Coruscant, and they have not evolved much since the days of Revan. Many still frequent the ranks of the Exchange and other criminal organizations. Some have even been seen in the great gladiatorial arenas of Mandalore's Great Hunt. Regardless of where travelers encounter them in the galaxy, there is one thing they should keep in mind when going toe-to-toe with Gamorreans: they are twice as strong as they are stupid.
