Lore Update: Ithorian

One the most memorable scenes in any of the Star Wars movies is the Mos Eisley cantina from Episode IV: A New Hope. As the camera pans the wide variety of species in the bar, it catches an Ithorian, a brown-skinned alien with a head shape reminiscent of a hammerhead shark's. The Ithorians are a peace-loving race with a long history and will appear in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Physical Description

Ithorians have a uniquely shaped head that has led to them often being referred to as "hammerheads, a name they find offensive. They have two mouths one on each side of their elongated necks and four throats. This physical trait gives their own language an interesting sound while also making it very difficult for other species to emulate. In an interesting application of those four throats, Ithorians have the ability to force an intense air blast from their mouths. The Ithorian Jedi Master Roron Corobb learned to use the Force to enhance this ability into a powerful weapon.

Society and Culture

The Ithorian home planet of Ithor is a vibrant and fertile world. The Ithorians feel a very powerful connection to the planet and hold a deep respect for its life, which includes semi-sentient and telepathic plant life. Once the technology became available, Ithorians migrated their cultures to enormous repulsorlift platforms, known as Herdships, where they could live without despoiling their precious planet surface.

The species is generally considered a peaceful and polite one, with respect not just for their "Mother Jungle" planet, but for all life. An agricultural lifestyle is a natural fit for most Ithorians, while some of the more curious and social among them travel the galaxy becoming traders or farmers elsewhere.

Force sensitivity is not uncommon among the Ithorians. Members of the race who display connections to the Force are often escalated to the positions of priests and leaders within their society.

History and the Destruction of Ithor

Ithorians have long been productive and respected members of the Galactic community. Their peaceful nature is often welcome as the voice of reason during negotiations and important councils. The agricultural expertise and technology they possess has been crucial to helping restore planets that have been devastated by wars over the centuries.

Their home planet of Ithor was destroyed by the Yuuzhan Vong during the time of the New Jedi Order. A tree indigenous to the planet produced a pollen that happened to be an effective weapon against the biological armor worn by the Yuuzhan Vong. The planet was attacked and destroyed by the invaders before the pollen could be turned into a mass produced weapon.
