Choosing which class to play is a big decision when starting an MMORPG, but for Star Wars: The Old Republic it goes hand-in-hand with choosing your faction. The classes on both factions are essentially a reflection of one another, but their aesthetic and animation differences can be big determining factors for some players. For other players, it’s about the stories, the lightsaber, and the voices that make the difference. Here are a few reasons why playing the Republic faction might appeal to you.

The Hero's Journey
Star Wars is all about the hero’s journey. Joseph Campbell’s theory of the monomyth says that most protagonists in a narrative follow a pattern: A hero from the common world explores an outside supernatural world where he faces a rival, and after victory over that rival, returns to his common world and bestows a boon upon his fellow people. It breaks down further than that, into 17 stages to be exact, but the basic idea has appeared in countless movies, books, TV shows, and more. The Republic classes follow this pattern almost to the letter. The Trooper and Smuggler both start their class story on routine jobs, but become involved in a conflict bigger than themselves. Even as some of the more fantastical classes, such as the Jedi, your journey takes you to planets you wouldn’t see as a lowly padawan, and meet people you wouldn’t normally find in the Republic. The monomyth is fundamentally a satisfying narrative pattern that takes into account the structure and pacing of Freytag’s triangle. No matter which Republic class you choose the story won’t make you feel like you’re missing something.
Jedi Fantasy
Since the first showing of Star Wars in 1977, fans wanted nothing more than to wield a lightsaber and control the power of the Force. It is a fantasy true today for kids watching the Clone Wars television show as it was with people who saw Star Wars in the theaters. Playing either one of the Jedi classes fulfill this fantasy with added benefit of choice. Some Star Wars games in the past funnel you through the story with no ability to affect how the narrative concludes, but in Star Wars: The Old Republic along with the previous two Knights of the Old Republic games, you choose how to approach each situation. Do you follow the path of the Light, using the Jedi code for guidance as you become a hero of the Republic, or do you follow the path of the Dark, ignoring the Jedi code and defending your Republic by any means necessary? It’s a choice that any class can make, but it creates an intriguing dynamic for the Jedi classes as it shows the contrast between the classic archetype versus the anti-hero.

Badass Trooper
Being a Jedi is great, but some players don’t want to use a lightsaber. Instead, they want to grab the biggest gun possible and single-handedly take on the Sith Empire. If that sounds fun, you should play a Trooper. The class plays like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie from the 1990s without the terrible story and cheesy lines; you’re a one-man army mowing down enemies left and right with big guns, grenades, and lots of explosions. The story is hyper-militaristic and immerses you in the life of the Republic’s most elite Special Forces unit. As I said on a recent podcast, it is hands-down the best class story of the Republic. BioWare should be commended not only for creating a class that encapsulates the strength of the Republic military, but for leaving out the one important story detail in all of their marketing and promotional material that defines how the Trooper story unfolds.
You always have someone to fight in PvP
It’s no secret that Sith players outnumber Republic players on most servers. Some claim their server ratios are as high as 5-to-1 in the Sith’s favor. If the Sith Empire has more players, what advantage does playing the under populated faction offer? Republic players enjoy shorter wait times for Warzones on a regular basis. Very rarely will Republic players have to wait in queue for longer than five minutes, even when grouped as a team of four. When they enter the Warzone, it isn’t Huttball every single time. Republic players have the luxury of playing Alderaan Civil War, Voidstar, and Huttball on a regular rotation. Victories are challenging as a Republic player and won through smart play, rather than large numbers.
Voice Talent
Where else besides the Republic are you going to find Commander Shepard, Nathan Drake, Solid Snake, Phil, and Lil on the same side? The Sith Empire highlights many voice actors who previously worked on other BioWare projects, but only the Republic boasts famous voice actors with high caliber voice-over work you heard elsewhere. Jennifer Hale, known for her famous portrayal of the female Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series and various other games including Bulletstorm, Metal Gear Solid, Metroid Prime, and Brutal Legend, voices the female Trooper. Nolan North voices the male Jedi Consular, a proficient voice actor best recognized for his role as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series as well as games such as Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, and Portal 2. David Hayter, who plays Solid Snake of the Metal Gear Solid games, provides the voice work for the male Jedi Knight. Kath Soucie voices the female Smuggler and worked on various video games and television series including Tomb Raider, Kingdom Hearts, World of Warcraft, and Rugrats. I still remember the first time I heard her distinct voice as Sally Acorn on the Saturday morning Sonic cartoon.
Whatever your reason may be, the Republic has something that everyone can enjoy. Remember that you don’t have to be Sith if you want to play as a dark-sided character, you can also take a Republic character down the dark path. Some of the storylines and decisions may even seem more sinister against the backdrop of justice for the Republic. Feel free to list your reasons for playing a Republic class in the comments below or in our forums.

Posted 2/14/2012 4:15:09 AMIs this article to blame for the drastic rise of nearly unkillable Jedi Consular's everywhere? Or is that someone elses fault.

Posted 2/13/2012 2:54:55 PMRepublic, and never regretted a minute of it. I just - can't get over the "sameness" of the Empire. Everything has the exact same color scheme, same design, it's just very monotonous to me. Also - at least on my server, the players are....not exactly the most mature, either. >.>

Posted 2/9/2012 1:59:07 PMEveryone always seems to forget that Jennifer Hale's also the voice of Bastila AND Satele Shan.. especially relevant credentials considering the game, I think :p

Posted 2/9/2012 11:02:21 AMA friend sent me a link to this article, I think to try and convince me to switch to a Republic character. First of all I'd like to point out that no matter which side you choose, it's a totally subjective thing, but there are still a few flaws in these 5 points. Also I've played nearly every class up to lvl ~20 except for the Smuggler/Agent simply because I'm not a fan of the cover mechanic.
1) The Hero's Journey - This is a bit of a trap since all 4 Republic classes fall under this while the 4 Empire classes actually have far more variance in their stories (well as varied as you're going to get seeing as you all end up on the same planets no matter what). Once you've played one hero, you've basically played them all. Sadly the Light Side/Dark Side options don't really do too much to help add any real variance to the story, especially when Dark Side choices fall under the "evil for the sake of insanity" column, especially for the Jedi. However it doesn't really let you deviate from the main story either, so it's not like you're a "Badass Jedi" who saved people, just an insane one who got the job done. Thankfully the Trooper seems to suffer less from this do-gooder/psychopath pitfall that seems to plague the writing for the Jedi classes.
On the Imperial side being a Light Side Sith isn't about saving puppies and doing the right thing, but about subverting the Sith order. So while the story still basically plays out the same for your class, it still "feels" different enough. Some sith lords will comment that your light side choices make you soft/weak, but when you later crush them they actually start to see things your way or at least respect you more for it. In the end it just seems like Empire got better writing, likely because they weren't stuck on the rails of the Hero's Journey.
2) Jedi Fantasy - Now this is totally opinion on my part, but the Jedi stories to me really suck. I'll admit that I found them so bad that I never got past Croissant with either my Consular or Knight simply because of how bored I got. Maybe they do get better, but I didn't want to waste any more time not having fun. The Jedi Knight never really gave that "Luke Skywalker feel" of finding out you're strong in the force or even young Obi Wan's cool presence. I felt more like Dudley Do Right or the old D&D Paladin "Lawful Stupid" trope.
The Jedi Consular suffers a little bit less from being "Lawful Stupid" (although the Dark Side choices just make you swing the other way to "Chaotic Idiot"), but really suffers from a major flaw when compared to it's oposite class, the Sith Inquisitor: You will never look as cool as the Inquisitor. Period. Throwing pebbles will never look as cool as tossing around lightning. And even though both classes are forced to wear skirts and silly headpieces, the Inquisitor will still look better. You could say that's subjective, but search around for screen shots of armor and combat. You'll never find one in which the consular will ever look better than the inquisitor.
3) Badass Trooper - Okay you win here. Trooper and it's story are pretty badass. I've yet to talk to a Trooper player who doesn't like the story they're in. My "main" in a Bounty Hunter, and I love my Bounty Hunter's story, yet even I get a little jealous of some of the spoilers I've heard about the Trooper's quest line. I would play more of my Trooper if it wasn't for the fact that I enjoy my Bounty Hunter's combat animations a little more and i want to get to the end of his story. I will return to the Trooper though that's for sure. So yeah, Trooper's the way to go if you're going to roll on the republic side. Also doesn't suffer as much from poor LS/DS writing.
4) PVP - Eh, pvp isn't for everyone and really choosing a faction is more about story than it is about which team you play for. While always having a group for battlegrounds is nice, remember that some battlegrounds actually take some co-operation to pull off successfully (aka huttball). Also, good luck on Ilum.
5) Voice Actors - Mixed bag. I love Nolan North's work, but some of the writing is so bad for the Jedi that there's no saving the class. Jennifer Hale's Trooper is FemShep in Star Wars. While cool, I personally found it a little distracting. I have no clue who the other two are although I found the male Jedi Knight to be an absolute bore to listen to so I just turned on subtitles and skipped his conversations. A few notes on Imperial voice actors; The female Agent is FemHawke from Dragon Age 2, the male Bounty Hunter is cheesy and over the top, and all of the Sith voice actors really do their voices well. Then again it may just be easier to equate evil with British voices, while the americanized Jedi come off as too anachronistic. Finally as an Imperial you get to kill off or screw over Ander's VA (from DA2) several times. Damnit Anders...
------
This was really long, sorry, but in the end I find that only the Trooper seems to be a any sort of real draw to playing on the Republic. Obviously play whatever class you enjoy and have fun, don't let one person's opinion ruin a game for you. That said I still find that the Empire got the better end of both the story writing and overall aesthetic design. I'm not sure how BioWare can fix the Jedi stories at this point, especially early on. Aesthetically more can be doen to at least make Jedi look cooler (better armor for Consulars, hoods you can take down on robes, better power animations, etc).

Posted 2/10/2012 8:40:52 AMJo Wyatt trumps all the other voice actors, does she not? :P
But seriously, when picking a class I went through all the sound clips and went with the one that grabbed me, and based on my experience it seems like a good way to settle things. Female IA ftw.

Posted 2/10/2012 2:15:24 PMShe's got a pretty sounding voice no doubt about it. Honestly I like her better than Hale. Different strokes for different folks. That said whenever I group up with an Agent and they get to speak I start looking around for Varric and Merril...

Posted 2/10/2012 12:29:51 AMExactly.. My girlfriend tried to play Republic Consular, but got bored somewhere in the middle and doesn't run game anymore. She claims the story forces her to be retardedly good angel or insane psychopat and both isn't fun. On the other hand I played as Sith Inquisitor and had feeling that choosing LS/DS choices to feels more normal, depends if you like the NPC you are dealing with or not. Choosing answers this way will keep you somwhere in the middle between light and dark.

Posted 2/9/2012 11:49:41 AMDavid Hayter was Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series. That should be a big flag role to recognize. Kath Soucie has been in every other major cartoon since the late 80s.

Posted 2/9/2012 12:53:18 PMNever played Metal Gear Solid so that doesn't mean much to me. That said I'm sure the VA does great work, but bad writing and story just kills the class for me.

Posted 2/9/2012 9:03:30 AMI just rolled a Trooper. I also have a lvl 37 Operative and lvl 13 Marauder. I'm already liking the Trooper story even though I realize I'm still in the Prologue portion of it. I have to admit, my big beef with the Agent is the voice acting. I was hoping it would grow on me, but the British accent just throws off my mental image of the character. The story is fine, but I really enjoyed Chapter 1 whereas Chapter 2 isn't as strong. My Agent will be the first class I get to max level, but I can already see there will be another class I could end up enjoying more than a Concealment Agent.

Posted 2/9/2012 8:04:19 AMI beg to differ. I find the (light side) Consular story to be pretty vapid, at least through Balmorra. I would have abandoned it long ago if it wasn't the toon I was leveling with my wife.
Trooper's is freaking awesome though (almost done with Alderaan). I played Imperial Agent and Jedi Knight in beta and I would say Trooper ranks highest among those that I've played.

Posted 2/9/2012 5:37:36 AMSecond thought on this very good article: only way to fix this is to make the LS Imperial path undesireable. What the heck is a "nice guy" Sith anyways? Dead. That's what a LS Sith is, dead.

Posted 2/9/2012 5:34:24 AMWhy play Jedi? Who wants to be a Space Monk? I am solidly pro-procreation and I enjoy having sex without gaining DS points
Seriously, as a fan I've known since I watched the credits roll on Return of the Jedi that the Jedi Order's major flaw is their views on sex and emotional attachment. Trying to become something you are not, ie. an emotionless being, doesn't work, and it leads to dysfunction. That's what happened to the order in the movies we've seen. The same thing would happen again to a "real" Jedi Order if it continued to deny the existence of emotions and emotional attachment.

Posted 2/9/2012 8:50:42 AMActually my main for raiding is a JK. Played thru the entire story flirting any chance along with way with npc's and sexed Kira up every chance I had one her bug was finally fixed along with getting down with the Matriarch on Tyhon. The first week of Early Access I couldnt stop laughing over the fact that I got a commendation for tapping that. I only gained 150 ds points before finishing chapter 3 and was still able to have alot of fun as a snarky, well-laid Jedi that still easily made it to Light V. Obviously not as well laid as the Smuggler story, but nothing of the "space monk" you so describe.

Posted 2/9/2012 12:43:21 AMNice article,
I don't want to start any flame, but first in open beta I started played republic Consular for first few levels, than I tried Inquisitor and the Sith storyline compared to Republic seemed far more addictive to me. I did really enjoyed class quest chain and was near shit my panties at the epic end of Act I.
This is main reason I leveled up imperial one, even despite movie story is all about the republic and I would be rather choose being Jedi.
Anyway I think real issue in game with faction member count comes only at Ilum PvP, PvE and WZs should be fine both sides.
