This week, we hear from Jesse Sky on the subject of Nightmare Explosive Conflict (Denova) and find out exactly why it is taking so long to reach players. We also cover the Official SW:TOR podcast, which specifically focused on PvE Ops content. Finally, we check in with the community at large to see just what has everyone fascinated. For the full story, hit the jump.
Weekly News Round-Up
This week, Jesse Sky comments on Nightmare difficulty coming to Explosive Conflict, ensuring players that it is a top priority for the team.
The second episode of the Official SW:TOR Podcast went live recently, and for those that are interested in how the developers make design choices for Operations content, it is a must-listen.
The guild Methodical from The Bastion recently sat down with Jesse Sky and has an in-depth discussion about Operations. Topics range from what the developers have learned from previous content, relative boss difficulty within the same Operation, as well as the technology involved in creating encounters.
Community Spotlight
Vagabonds on The Harbinger are working hard to dispel the myth that an all melee Operation can't cut it, as illustrated in their kill of Warlord Kephess on Hard Mode! A very large tip of the hat to those involved. For the full scoop on their melee-centric strategies, as well as the rest of their kill videos, check out this thread on the official forums.
Lag has become a very hot topic since the server merges, and this has affected the performance of Operations Groups. Anyone that does end-game content will tell you that lag can be a killer and several players are reporting some serious lag issues. To weigh in on this topic, head over to the official forums and let your opinion be heard.
Weekly Op-Ed
The Challenge of Operations, or Lack Thereof
Difficulty in an Operation is a very tough thing to get right, as evidenced by a constantly changing operations environment, and numerous balance patches to even things out. If the developers over-tune content, they lock all but the most hardened players from reaching the pinnacle of content and clearing an instance for the week. If it's under-tuned or "too easy", cries of "Casuals!" go up on the official forums, and there exists a general wailing and gnashing of teeth. Obviously the developers intent, initially at least, is to aim somewhere in the middle; making content accessible to almost everyone, while providing a unique and often difficult challenge to the truly dedicated.
Many players will clear the hardest content in very short order, oftentimes on the day that it's released. Naturally, these types of players are always going to be hungry for more content, and as such may feel that the developers are lagging behind with releasing the content. However, there will always be the contingent of players who do not dedicate nearly as much time to the game, and as a result desire a more "a la carte" raiding experience that doesn't exactly sync up with the desires of a more vocal Operations community.
Personally, I am of the opinion that players will always find a niche, particularly if they are a fan of a game or series. There will always be groups of players that lean to one side of the argument or the other, and what's really important is that one half remembers to regard the other with respect when leveling criticisms of the current state of the game. I'm pleased with the range of challenges that have been presented to myself and my guildmates thus far, but I know that I'm not the most hardcore player on the planet, either. In the end, games like TOR rely on a strong community, and it's up to the players to voice their opinions, albeit in a mature manner.
In this week's poll, we want to know what you think. Do you believe the content is too easy over all? Alternatively, do you think that the players complaining are doing too much in too short of a time period?

Posted 7/17/2012 4:36:00 AMModay, it is because you aren't getting Stormcaller down fast enough, or your person on the ground is LOSing him. To avoid the lightning spire you need to keep Stormcaller at least 3% lower than Firebrand and have your guy on the ground between Firebrand and Stormcaller when Defensive systems activate. If you don't do this, you'll get a spire on the tank between the DPS and the tank as a consequence.

Posted 7/14/2012 1:22:25 AMI want the nightmare mode EC as much as the next guy, but what Bioware really needs to fix is the bugs and lag in the ops right now. My guild is stuck on the tank in EC hm because the lightning bubble keeps bugging out and landing on the stormcaller tank, even though we have a guy on the ground, not to mention the trouble for our tanks with the tab target not working as it should while on the tank, and to top it all of we randomly get huge lag spikes from the server. And did I read them correctly when they asked if we are enjoying the better performance from the new super servers???

Posted 7/12/2012 8:30:42 AMI think Story Mode Denova may be a bit overtuned... It's supposed to be something for casual players (Story Mode... That was the point), but it just isn't that way. Pugging it is a pain/nightmare depending on the degree of pug, and if it really was a casual type of op it wouldn't be. They even originally had it in the random ops for the GF dailies, but they had to pull it. They also said you could do it in mostly Columi gear... hmmm (only if you are really really good, which is counter to the casual idea).
I think, in this game in particular, that the hardcore players shout the loudest, and often times, I think the developers scale stuff for them. The problem is that while that small population shouts, the casual players will just up and quit. I think BioWare has to be very careful over-tuning story mode because the casual players won't shout out as much to defend themselves... They'll just leave... I think we've seen a lot of that already.
Use Hard Mode and Nightmare mode to ramp up the challenges.

They've been catering to a small subset of very hardcore players that will complete content quickly and not be happy with it. Now they've come out and said, "We're catering this subset further by working creating a more difficult mode of an existing operation than focusing on 'new' content or fixing issues that prevent access."
I've been in fairly hardcore guilds throughout most games. I'm in a pretty casual guild in SWTOR so I can play with the people I want. I have to face a choice of leaving that guild to join a more hardcore guild because people rolled up a melee DPS and are average players and don't have a time to roll up a faceroll DPS class.
Balance is a major issue that needs to be addresses before they worry about catering to the hardcore guilds.

Posted 7/12/2012 8:54:38 PMIt's not overtuned, even if you are casual it is a progression raid, meaning you need to have done the other two on hardmode otherwise it's going to really difficult. You need good gear to do it but once you have it, story mode denova really isn't that bad.

Posted 7/11/2012 12:19:21 PMThey should already be testing a new OP by now, forget about nightmare modes... its long past too late. Everyone has been running EC long enough to be ready for a new raid.

Posted 7/12/2012 8:56:13 PMWoW had Icecrown citadel out for an entire year before another raid came out.
Everyone was pissed off, Denova has only been out for a few months and we are getting a new raid in a couple more.
So we are getting content really fast.

Posted 7/13/2012 7:15:12 AMI agree with you. Everyone loves to bitch about SWTOR not having "enough Endgame", like all others MMOs out there are perfect and have 200 Ops and 300 WZ.
