Crowd Control: What's In Your Wallet?

Welcome to another edition of Crowd Control, a statistical analysis of Star Wars: The Old Republic and its players. Previous editions took a look at the Battle of the Sexes and Who’s Ganking Whom.

This time around we’re interested in the economy in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

- Are Bounty Hunters generally richer than other classes thanks to their high priced work?
- Do light side characters spend more time crafting than dark side characters?
- Are women more likely to use the GTN than men?

To answer these questions, Crowd Control will employ a brief survey after which our team of Darth Hater astromech droids will analyze the data in search of the most interesting trends and correlations. Subsequent installments will offer color commentary on the insights provided for your reading pleasure.

Please read on below the jump to take our two-minute survey, and let us know in the comments if you have ideas for future polls or analysis. Also note that any information you choose to share will not be used for any purposes outside of the scope of Crowd Control. If for any reason you prefer not to answer a particular question, just leave it blank. Thanks for participating, this project would not be possible without your support!

UPDATE: Results of the survey are now available. Thanks to all who participated!

 Results

How rich are you?
Less than 250k 17%
Between 250k and 500k 17%
Between 500k and 750k 10%
Between 750k and 1 million 9%
Between 1 and 2 million 16%
Between 2 and 5 million 17%
Between 5 and 10 million 8%
More than 10 million 6%

The 1 million credit mark seems to be right around the median, as it's almost a 50/50 split of people above and below that mark. Only 14% of players have more than 5 million credits.

How many characters is that wealth spread across?
Just one. 15%
Between two and five. 53%
Between five and eight. 24%
Between eight and ten. 6%
More than ten. 2%

The following chart shows the break down of wealth by "primary activity" - Players who prefer "Solo PvE" tend to be the poorest while players who prefer "Group PvE" are among the wealthiest.

Primary Sources of Income (can choose more than one):
Flashpoints/Operations loot 35%
Daily Missions 66%
Non-daily Missions 19%
Selling crafted items on the GTN
25%
Selling raw crafting materials on the GTN
18%
Selling looted or other items (ie. gifts, schematics, etc.) on the GTN
21%
Selling crafted items via the Trade chat channel 2%
Selling raw crafting materials via the Trade chat channel 2%
Selling looted or other items (ie. gifts, schematics, etc.) via the Trade chat channel 3%
Buying low/selling high on the GTN
7%
Slicing (cash from lockboxes) 26%
Warzone Rewards 26%
Other 7%

Two thirds of players said Daily Missions were one of their primary sources of income. Over a third of players said that Flashpoints/Operations loot was one of their primary sources of income. Around a quarter said Selling Crafted items on the GTN, Slicing, and Warzone rewards were among their primary income sources. And despite the "WTS" spam we see in the trade channel every day, only 2%-3% said selling items via the trade channel were among their primary sources of making money.

What do you spend the majority of your money on?
Legacy perks 22%
Consumables (stims, medpacks, etc.) 3%
Equipment upgrades (high-end raid gear, PvP equipment, armor modifications, etc.) 33%
Vanity items (pets, vehicles, social armor, etc.) 3%
Repair bills 8%
Extracting equipment modifications and/or adding augmentation slots 23%
Other 8%

Equipment upgrades are the main expense for a third of the players. Legacy perks and the cost of extracting mods or adding augmentation slots seem to be effective money sinks, as almost a quarter of the players list each of those as their main expenses.

Where does the majority of your money go?
Other players 23%
NPC vendors 32%
Into thin air 45%

Almost half of the players said “Into thin air” meaning expenses that don’t go back to other players via the GTN or to NPCs via repairs or vendor bought items. This seems to mesh with the previous numbers that have a good amount of the money going to Legacy perks and equipment modifications.

I'm really interested to see how many people say that a majority of their credits have disappeared into thin air. I can't believe we're a tad bit over 7 months into the game and Bioware is still forcing people to send basically all of their credits into oblivion. I'm still hoping that since Georg is gone the absurd amounts of credit sinks will disappear as well. I am actually holding back from rolling any more alts because I want the perks, but I am not about to spend all of my credits on those perks. I busted my tail getting to legacy level 41, I should not be spending millions of credits PER TOON to unlock perks. When they rolled out the current perk system it almost felt as if someone pulled the rug out from underneath me.

I've sent millions of credits to alts and friends and never once had them disappear.  And if they remove the credit sinks, inflation will sky rocket.  Credits are really easy to get and the only thing that has stopped me from breaking 20 mill credits is the legacy stuff.  You know how many times Ive conteplated buying damn near everything on the gtn and totally taking over the market??  And I know that if I've though about it, someone else has too.

So, what you're saying is, just because playing this game as if it were a chore yields plenty of credits, that the credit sinks are not pointless? That doesn't fly. I don't have time to run around doing dailies every single day just to keep up with Bioware's credit sinks. I also have 4 alts that I play pretty regularly and they need credits and legacy perks as well. I wasn't one of the lucky people to pick up Slicing on all 8 toons when the game first came out to have millions upon millions of credits right now to play the GTN effectively, so that's out of the question. I feel almost as if every credit sink in the game is only there because of all of the people that had slicing when the game first came out.

Okay, that was just a low blow dude.  First, none of my toons have slicing.  I have never exploided an in game issue to generate credits.  There is no cheating going on here at all.  Second,  I don't do dailies everyday.  in fact, I am actually a casual player.  I play like 3 days a week.  That is why I have a hard time figuring out how people are broke all the time.  In fact, my two crafting professions on my two 50s are what the community would consider none money makers.  Artifice and Cybertech.  So explain that??

  • #9 f0xtr0t369

In fact, I think most people don't make money off the gtn here is because there is no add on to do the thinking for them.  That's right, I said it.  It had to be said.  I made a killing when server transfers happened selling all low level artifice items on the gtn to people leveling.  There's no point selling mods and enhancements, since you can buy them for 2 comms a piece on every planet, but hilts, color crystals, and armorings that either cost 7 comms each, or color crystals (can't buy straight up for comms).  Players blowing through class quest lines wont usually get enough co.ms per planet to buy these, hence they sell.  And don't even get me started on droid parts!  Manybe it's because I work for an E commerce site right now but my stuff sells.  Heck, I even buy market saturated items (below vendor cost) just to re sell and make a quick buck.  There is tons of credits floating around this game, you just have to be smart enough to grab them.  My favorite, is buying treasure hunting missions around the 200 - 300 level range, sending my crit companions on the missions, and then selling the color crystals they make with the mats for 30k - 40k.  Did I mention the mission only costed me 2500 on the gtn and 1100 to send out the companion?? I usually get enough epic gems to make 2 color crystals per mission return and the credits and the companion gifts make up for all invested costs once I sell them too.  You do the math.

Space dailys are awesome cash too.

15 minutes to complete the top 2 space dailies nets you about 30k and 40 space commendations, 5 days of them = 150k and 200 space comendations, trade the commendatiosn at the fleet for the grade 8 material lock box and you either get 2x matrix things(250k a piece) or 3 x molecular stabilisers(165-175k) a piece.

so for 1 hour 15 mins(ish) of minimal effort time you can reel in a decent 600/650k ish.

    really easy no effort money.

Nice!!  I haven't even though about doind this!!  I will from now on thou!

  • #2 f0xtr0t369

I hear so many people say they never list anything on the gtn.  I have no idea why people would do this.  Specially since it seems like if you don't cancel your auctions and they dont sell, you get your listing fees back.  I think this is just awesome since other games charge you a listing fee regardless if it sells.

  • #3 Jaspor

I agree 100%. The numbers so far say otherwise, but we'll give it a few days and see how things shake out. ;)

Really? I would have never of guessed.   There are 5 of us IRL friends that play tjis game together and I am the only one of the group that uses the gtn to sell stuff.  In fact, I am also the "richest" one in our group and end up feeding them credits.  They all have at least 1 50 and numerous alts, with maxed professions.   B ut then again, I am the only one that follows this game on the forums and fansites (ie darthhater.com) so none of them are in the survey.  Wouldn't it be cool to do a survey on that trend as well?

Just last week I bought all Ciridium stacks from GTN to resell at a higher price. That was really good, about 400,000c profit.
