PvP Video Spotlight:

This week’s PvP video spotlight comes to us from Damonshine, playing Frankbooth on Tomb of Freedon Nadd (EU). His Hyrbid Sage skills are formidable indeed, but what I like most about this video is that explanations of what is happening are given throughout, so you understand how he is doing some of the insane stuff in the video. This is my favorite style of PvP video and I am very excited to be able to present this one for your approval. You can check out Damonshine's channel here.

Op-Ed: Ancient Hypergates and the return of Khaine’s Embrace

So at Gamescom we got confirmation that Ancient Hypergates is a two-point exploding capture map. Those of you who have played Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will recognize this map: Khaine’s Embrace, one of the initially low-level scenarios, was this type. For those of you who haven’t, I’ll explain. There are two points on the map. When you capture both and hold them for a short period of time (about 10 seconds in WAR), you score points.

Oh yeah, and then they explode.

There’s a middle area that is safe, but that otherwise has no strategic benefit (there’s no point here to capture). When the flags explode, this area turns into a desperate struggle for survival as players attempt to retreat to it after fighting for the flags. Players are slowed, snared, and knocked into the incoming explosion. Low-health players make extreme sacrifices to keep enemy players from escaping the blast radius. As the blast clears, whoever is left in the middle emerges to attempt to recapture the flags again for more points.

You may be able to tell that I am a huge fan of this type of map. I really think that it is one of the more unique PvP game types available out there, and forces all players to remain situationally aware. It’s also pretty fun to throw a fleeing player into a massive explosion.

While we don’t have much high-quality footage of the game type and don’t know 100% how scoring will work, it appears that kills grant some points while most points are derived from capturing both flags. [EDIT: Commenter Frag971 pointed me to the fact that kills are stored as points, the value of these kills increases over time and points are awarded when both points are captured.] Here is some more footage of the warzone, taken at Gamescom:

I can not express how utterly disappointed I've become with SWTOR's PvP.  I'm so sick of 15 min instanced PvP mini-games.  I'm disgusted with the fact that others see this as acceptable.  I'm not one of those PvPers that bash PvE play as I love both sides of game play.  However, what ever happened to faction base captures, artificact defense concepts, etc.  I see NO attempt from BW to arrange underdog bonus systems to encouraged balanced faction play that would make this viable.  I see NO attempt at epic captial ship boarding and capture.  The possibilities are endless and it only takes commitment.  The more I see of this vision BW is giving us for the future, the more hope that I lose.  But PvP needs to have a compelling dramatic reason behind it other than another gear grind with additional gear tiers after gear tiers.

The closest I think I'll get to this is the siege warfare coming in GW2 where I can capture a keep and claim it for my guild for defense like we could in camelot.  These concepts present epic and dynamic gameplay that really fosters faction pride and community in an MMO as they did in DAoC.  I've been a huge fan of BW and had enormouse hopes for them to deliver on dynamic world PvP that has significant meaning beyond camping some poor guy trying to run a quest.

Furthermore, where are the voices from the fansites such as Darth Hater Op Ed writers with objective hard hitting questions for Bioware.  The more I read these articles, the more I see as additional diluted kool-aid that the BW reps are selling.  Darth Hater do BW a favor and start speaking out on these issues!

    This one looks good.

Definately excited about that one, no more "camping" of the enemy team on their canon while it's 430:440 against them for the rest of the game.

Did anyone actually ever got any ticket regarding "chatting" in a warzone and do you think the quality of the overall PvP increased or decreased since launch?

Now I've just to figure out how a dps assassin can do as much damage as I did with my mercenary at lvl 12 (200k +) so until then... good pvp to anyone.

In an interview i heard that the way you score points is that whenever you kill an enemy the points for that kill are stored in the explosion, and once your team explodes the two points you are awarded all the accumulated points. Also the score for each kill increases over time, (for example) 10 points for the first 5 minutes, then 20 for the second 5->10 minutes and finally 50 for the last 10 -> 15 minutes.

I hadn't heard that! I've updated the post. Thanks very much for the tip.
