Open Forum: Mini-games

With quality of life updates receiving more focus than full on feature updates, mini-games will hopefully receive more discussion for future inclusion in Star Wars: The Old Republic. We wanted to take this time to ask everyone a few things in regarding mini-games to get a general since where the community is on the subject. What type of mini-games would you like to be added? Pazaak? Swoop racing? Dejarik? Should they include betting via credits or be more for fun? Where would you like to see mini-games take place - common areas, entirely new areas, or personal ships? Should the games include matchmaking functions? If so, do you want to see them use the ELO system? If you have any feedback that does not fit the above questions, feel free to include it here as well in the comments section of this post.

We will hand select a few choice comments to be featured in the next podcast episode. Be constructive with your comments and do not flame or degrade others. We will moderate accordingly.

Pazaak would be nice, but they do need to fix one thing about it.

In KotOR, Pazaak was inherently unbalanced against the player because we always went first. The player to go second always knows what score he has to beat. Maybe make players move simultaneously?

Swoop racing as a PvP map would be great, would be even better open world with spectators though.

Pazaak with wagers would be great :)

I hope they never put in one of those "route the pipes" minigames that I've seen pop up in multiple other games.

They already did that.  It's the Black Hole heroic.

If the minigames supplement the experience, I'll all for 'em. If they're a replacement for content, no thanks. I know that doesn't answer the question, but I lost interest in another title in large part because it started to look more like a collection of unrelated Zynga games than an MMORPG.

They should definitely have the card games (all of them) and swoop racing.  The swoop races should be on planest like tatooine.  Give each player a ranking, and when the race has the required number of players, display an Odds board and let racers and spectators wager bids.  That way racers benifit but so do spectators.  They could use a matchmaking system so that racers don't have to be on said planet to race, but require spectators to be there.

For the card games, they should take place in the catinias and allow players to setup wadgers against each other.  Winner takes the pot.  wagers could be credits or BoE items and both players just need to click on the agreed window when the terms are agreeable.  Like, I could wadger 10k credits and my opponent could wager a stack of upari crystals.  As long as we both click agreed, winner takes the pot.  Of coarse, friendly games would be fine and games againts npc could put out little gains.  But a form to practice and have fun, with gains over a long time, to ensure the game just isn't just dumping in credits.

Any one of these could really help the social game out, not to mention give players a little something extra to do.  Image pvp servers, where one opposing faction might show up to a local "hot" spot to cause some trouble for card game players.  This would really serve up some open world pvp.

Last February I spoke out against using an ELO system as part of PvP matchmaking. I do however feel that ELO would work very well when used in 1v1 mini-games. I am all for as many of the pre-established star wars universe mini-games the devs would like to throw our way , but do not believe they should be allowed to be gambled upon or have tangible gains. I think a new Entertainment Commendation should be introduced that can be spent on purely cosmetic social items and accessories.

Racing yes and something to do in cantinas.STAR WARS MMO without minigames is a sad mmo.Sadly bioware is clueless on these star wars things. Also things to bet on like you see in episode II in the coruscant cantina.

I would love to see mini games included that a lot of people have already mentioned.  To add to this I think they should add more classes to support this.  Some examples are, Gambler, Pit Fighter of some sort, Swoop Racer,  and they could be a support class that could do different buffs/debuffs along with minor healing or dps depending on the spec and in the case of the pit fighter could be the run of the mill dps/tank/healer that we already have.  I also really liked how SWG had an entertainer class dancer/musician and would like to see it here.  All of these classes could appeal to all the different players.  the support side of it for PvE/PvP and would give the RPers all kinds of possibilities.

and by all means make the games available to all classes.  just thought the others would add a nice twist hehheh

I've been wishing for more ship customizations and reasons to hang out on your ship and visit friends' ships. So my thought was to allow players to purchase a table for playing one of a few choices of mini-games (e.g. pazaak, dejarik, sabacc). You could play practice games against your companions (i.e. the computer) on your ship, but also invite friends to play with you as well, especially nice if they have a different game on their ship. Certain cantinas should also have these mini-games available, but the difference could be that those require a buy-in and betting of credits, whereas games on your ship can be credit-free "friendly" games, so you can do it for practice or just for fun.

    Love this idea.

Or instead of wasting time on minigames, spend your time on, like, making the game that's already out not embarassingly bad. There's a reason it went f2p, they are riding on the star wars coattails. If they could have made this game halfway decent it would be a hit. But since the game itself is atrocious, the only subscribers left are the star wars fans.

And to make the game better, as you put it involves what?

It would be nice to hear suggestions. However, in the realm of MMOs having mini games that add life/social activities to the game is a huge plus.

I am not sure if your name is suppose to indicate something... but having mini games should have been in before the tube shooter, and we should have swoop racing, pazaak, gambling, 3d chess, and player bounties. It would have made the whole experience a lot different while playing swtor.

Alll of the above.  They should have the barren VIP section of fleet be turned into the games are.  Have a Pazaak/Dejarik/Sabaac corner, a swoop race corner, a corner for one on one death matches, and a corner for the survival pit game that Boxspringkid mentioned.  The Pazaak/Dejarik/Sabaac corner and the Swoop Race corrner should have the option of going against an NPC or another player for fun or credits.  And as others have mentioned other planets/cantinas should have some of the games.  Obviously Tatooine and Nar Shadda should have swoop races, all planets some form of Pazaak, Sabaac, and/or Dejarik.  I guess Tatooine and Nar Shadda are the only current planets that really fit the deathmatch/survival pit theme.  Man, just thinking of all this great stuff that will never actually end up in the game has got me pumped.
