Discussion: Future Content Coverage

Happy Friday everyone, and welcome to the first installment of our Discussion column.  This will be a semi-recurring column in which I ask all of you what you'd like to see in future content on the site.  The post itself will be short, as the focus here is what you all want done with what is very much 'your' site.  Absolutely any feedback is welcome in the comments section below, however a few points to consider:

  • Ideas for articles, features, guides, or columns.  I want to know what you'd all like to see in future iterations of our posts.
  • With respect to upcoming coverage, what are the most important things that you'd like to see highlighted?

Those are just basic considerations for expected feedback; if you have something that doesn't necessarily fit within those parameters, please feel free to offer it up anyway.  Remember that this site belongs to you as much as it does anyone else, so the future of it is very much in your hands.  When providing ideas or feedback on other presented ideas, please be respectful and courteous to your fellow readers, and please try to stay within the boundaries of being constructive.  Posts will be moderated accordingly, so keep that in mind.  At any rate, thanks for reading, and please offer your ideas for the future of the site below.

I use your mission database quite a lot, to see how to get most influence with my companions - and while it is not totally complete it is very useful. Getting that more updated so that it accurately displays what will give + or - affection with all companions for all quests would be great - though a huge undertaking. Someway for players to give you that info in an easy way would be great.

In that line of thought - often times quests, especially class ones, are close connected and one quest might turn into another during a conversation (when you start the convo, you're handing in one quest, and when it is finished you are on another) - for those times it would be really useful, if the "overview" display of quests showed what the next quest was and allowed you to click to it easily.

Another thing that would be really useful, is end-game crew skills guide. Where do you get the best recipes? What do you need to reverse engineer, what can you get with daily or black hole commendations and what drops from Op bosses? How are those pesky 27 mods, barrels and hilts made? Simply a guide to what to aim for when you have maxed out biochem, cybertech, synthweaving, armstech etc.

I'm curious if you're able to do something like the Torhead Leaks that were posted.

Is it possible to post something like this without being frowned upon by Curse, or otherwise?

I find the data mining when a new patch is released very helpful.  It is useful to have the new stuff listed in a separate query.

I've always enjoyed the guides. With all of the new folks coming to the game with free to play, some more "101/basics" guides would be nice. I was reminded of that today when someone new to pvp didn't know how to throw the huttball. Definitely funny, but how many of us would have thought to look through our general abilities for a specific pvp arena ability by ourselves?

  • #19 Lyeken

i didnt but when you first enter a huttball match it puts itself in the first open quickbar slot available

  • #20 Pallais

True, but not everyone has all their quickbars displayed. If you're new to MMOs you may only have the one quickbar displayed. The extended UI setup, let alone the UI editor, can easily escape your notice.

  • #21 Lyeken

    true, had forgot that

Not exactly about the coverage itself, but it seems to me you need someone with some graphic design experience. The header images with the yellow text stamped on a screenshot look terrible. Especially the one for this article, the image is to busy and the colors clash making the text hard on the eyes.

A tip to help you out if you have to do these yourself: Separate the text from the image. There are a few ways to do this, the easiest being boxes behind the text. Of course, you don't just want solid black boxes looking like closed captions. Try beveling the corners, outlining the box with a contrasting color, and applying a small emboss effect.

Other options are glows, drop shadows, embosses, strokes, etc. All are easily accomplished in Photoshop, GIMP, etc.

Look at the old header images for inspiration. The screenshots are darkened, the text is separated from the image with a glow/scan line effect, and the text is bold, large, and white, standing out against the background.

Other techniques they've used are a transparent stripe of black with orange pinstripes on the top and bottom, with text over top of it.

It may not be as important as the content itself, but good visual design sends a message of professionalism.

I would like to see a round up of the best youtube vids that come out each week/month. Many people (atleast on the bastion) post their pvp vids on the server forums weekly. Also, and I know this is a logistically difficult thing to do, but a race to world first/ top 5 pve progression guilds type thing. MMO-champ does a great job of keeping up with the world first races whenever new WoW content comes out. I know that swtor doesn't really have a good system for tracking those metrics but if there were some way to figure that out it would be awesome.

Regardless, you are doing a great job so far Vox, keep it up!

I think actually the #1 feature I loved from this site was the Dev Round Up.  I know that this might be hard since it seems to be just you at the moment Vox, but for people like us who don't have a whole lot of time to trawl the forums, having a post that highlighted all the "yellow mod" posts from the forums on important topics was great.  Not sure if these have slowed down on the official SWTOR forums, I just loved getting the updates direct from Allison/whoever.

I'd like an ongoing lore feature, given the game's story and all the ancillary materials surrounding it.  I'm a sucker for this stuff, and at this point the "distant past" expanded universe is arguably as rich as the EU surrounding the movies themselves.

I know running the DB is far more difficult for SWTOR than it is for WoW just because of the inherent lack of in-depth dataminers and smaller community sending in things like screenshots.

More video content would be nice, simple fare like speeder comparison videos, space combat guides, basic how-tos for advanced classes, highlighting different playstyles.  Sure, all this stuff exists in the world but putting a bit of it all under one roof would be nice.

I would apreciate any instant updates on incoming features rather than big feature articles every few days. I acknowledge that the information bioware provides is not very frecuent but any little additions/clarifications are most welcome. As a player I look forward to hear about any (tiny) news, such which specific factions would have reputation grind or things like that.

As I get used to the flow of things, I'll certainly push every bit of news out that I can.  That being said, I do monitor the news most of the time, so I'll try and stay on top of it, thanks for the feedback, and thanks for reading.

I have been a fan of the site since TOR was released and glad you guys/gals are back.

I would love to see the database get a little more love & attention.  I've not found a very comprehensive database for this game.  I would like it more if it had updated item information, not just on a cartel pack stand point but on FP, OPs, and world bosses.  Right now the only OPs that are listed in the DB are KP & EV.  The new ones aren't there unless I'm looking in the wrong place?

Wowhead had a very nice format where you click on the FP/OP name, a boss list is given and all loot in that OP/FP is displayed.  Clicking on the boss would give you specific loot drops for him/her and fight mechanics/ player tips.

If the information gathering is the problem for a much more complete database, then maybe put a call out on the main page for Darthhater viewers help.

I think manpower might be a slight issue for that.  There's only so much of Vox to go around...
