I chose story but it will be a combination of factors, story, gameplay, fun factor, the coolness factor (definitely swinging the Sith way), weapons, armor etc.

I would be hella surprised if the story actually beat out game play. Once your story is done game play is the only reason to continue to play. At least it is for me.

Why does DH hate so much? Is it a Freudian thing?

For me, it has always been about the gameplay. I trust that my story will feel personal not matter which class I pick, so that isn't really going to be a determining factor in my class choice. I also choose the grey path because of how I played KOTOR. Even though I wouldn't out right kill someone for the fun of it, I had no problem smacking them upside the head for not doing what I want.

I also think that it could be fun playing a bounty hunter or a sith warrior with a moral compass.

Will you be adding a "SEARCH" feature your wonderful website sometime soon? (or am I being dense and not seeing one that is already in place and working...?)

I was looking for information from the DEC 3rd Extravaganza today, and I actually had to go to the SW:TOR official site to find a link back to this site for the article I wanted to read again. Gah... you've probably got it right on the Home page and I'm just not seeing it, but if so, could you narrow down where I have to look for it?

Im voting gameplay because I feel that I could enjoy any story that Bioware gives me as Im a fan of their writing but my prolonged enjoyment of the game will come down to how I respond to gameplay features such as whether I have to grind heavily to level up.

Im also voting for grey but what I noticed in the kotor games (although II was developed by Obsidian) is there was much more incentive to go light or dark because of the bonus to abilities used in those alignments along with conversational and story advantages. Which leads me to be slightly undecided until they announce what impact the (scarcely mentioned) alignment system has on the actual gameplay and story.

I voted gameplay, although it is just looking at my main for which I'm very much interested in the story as well.
As I've mentioned before, I'm planning to roll every classes, and mainly to experience there story.
In the end, I guess the real answer would be a some of both.
As for the moral path, I've always chosen a light side approach so far, but in TOR I feel I might be drown to whatever choice I will find the most relevant depending on the situation, and I guess it will not always be the light one...

Always gameplay and always dark :D though i am really tempted to see how a light sith would work.. By the way, sorry if this has already been mentioned but amazon.co.uk is now selling swtor for pre-sale stating that it will be released on 31st October 2010... Could that be some big news leaked ahead of E3? Either way seems a tad too early if beta hasnt even begun yet. Thoughts?

    It is probably misinformation.

Bioware is aiming for Spring 2011 and have said so multiple times.

While I do have a very big interest in the SI storyline. The main reason I am playing this class is because it looks like it is going to best suit my play style the most which is typically more caster based. Being a PvP orientated player I don't think storyline is going to hold much weight there so I really just hope game play is smooh and balanced.

As far as choices go. I would hope that I end up playing more of the dark side route. As a SI it will be interesting to see what earns you more darkside points; killing someone or saving someone to serve you. So it really is hard to say how dark I may actually end up being. I hope the choices are so clear cut.

Gameplay will always determine my class. Especially when Bioware is making sure every class will get a kick-ass storyline. Just play the class YOU think is cool. If you think a certain class has a cooler/better storyline than another, then play that class. Although that would never be my choice. I would try to find the class I would like to play based on melee/ranged/skills/etc.

On the morality subject. I'm very undecided. It's going to depend on the particular choices I get and propably also how I'm feeling that day. Although I tend to play all good or all bad (MIE and MIE2), but we never had that choise in an mmo which makes me just want to choose the way I feel that day and depending on the choices I get.

I've been searching for the answer to this question as I have seen it many times on the official forums and the arguments that always seem to ensue. I figure this will be a good time to ask. Has Bioware mentioned anything about players being locked into their Advanced Class once they choose it? I could have sworn that I saw a video where one of the Bioware guys said this was the case but I have yet to find it. Do you know if this was ever said and if not how do you feel about it and the chances that something like that would be implemented considering their old rants about "choices with consequences"?

I do have another question for you in case you're lacking some material to discuss for this upcoming podcast. Space combat has been one of the larger debates on the official forums. Bioware had mentioned last summer, two separate times, that a space experience would be found in the game. One of the quotes literally said space 'combat'. Considering that it has been nearly a year since this was mentioned and we have seen nothing on that aspect of the game yet (which I understand means almost nothing since we've seen very, very little on anything else) how do you feel about its chances to be in the game and what would you expect of space combat in a game like this?

    Thank you.

There was an interview of Jake Neri that was conducted by Dover and Sado during which he sort of addressed the question you're asking...

"Jake Neri: Without going into a ton of detail on that, because that system is still in development, a key goal is that once you reach a certain level and you have enabled those certain paths, or you have experienced whatever it takes to enable those paths, you can go in between them quickly.

That is the heart of what we're saying. You can't do everything all at once, you need to earn some of these things. But once you have done that and you are in a situation where "hey, I need this type of a gameplay/class build," you'll be able to go into that quickly."

Here's a link to that interview if you'd like to read the rest of it, or get a better idea of the context that conversation was taking place in:
    http://darthhater.com/2009/12/03/jake-neri-interview-part-two/

Basically, it looks like they intend to include a game mechanic that will allow for re-spec of advanced classes, but Jake did leave in some wiggle room with the "...that system is still in development" cya.

That could be him talking about talent trees. At that time I don't think the term "Advanced Class" had been coined yet and there was only speculation about talent trees. Now that we know for a fact that talent trees exist that makes all previous quotes even more uncertain. I would ask this... why bother creating two different classes from the same archetype if you can just jump back and forth between them? Why not just give the Sith Warrior 4 or 5 talent trees and leave it at that? The new Advanced Class page on the official website drives home the point that choosing your Advanced Class is a big deal. That it's a very important decision for your character. Why so much emphasis on its importance if it's just something you can alter at will?
  • #28 ArcherAvatar
First, he did say, "...that system is still in development."
It may very well be that they decided against implementing a re-spec mechanic for one reason or another.

However, when he is talking about the re-spec mechanic and "easily going back and forth" it was when they were specifically talking about the 2 advanced classes of the Smuggler. So I don't think it was just "talking about talent trees."

They were in fact, discussing the Scoundrel and Gunslinger... the 2 Advanced Class paths for the Smuggler. There was talk about the path that allowed the Smuggler to be more sneaky, or to use "medicine" or to be more proficient with longer range combat, and those are very specifically topics that have to do with the Advanced Classes.
