Community Questions/Comments

Caliber: Advanced classes should be permanent. The base classes only exist for story reasons. Advanced classes are the "real" classes. I think Bioware needs to play with semantics and rename the base classes to "archetypes" or something similar and drop the "advanced" part of the advanced classes. It would cause less confusion and solidify the idea that a Gunslinger serves a completely different purpose than a Scoundrel.

Aceldama: The 2nd question I chose combat assistance as I usually play heals it makes questing take a long time in the mid lvls when dps is slow. So any help they give on the face melting portion is gonna help the small portion of us the like being the healer.

Evel: I actually paused before I voted, but I still voted yes. While I like the idea of it being a permanent choice I also know the reality of MMO's and the shortcomings of particular classes/roles (i.e. healers). And since the storyline doesn't care whether you are a Sith Juggernaut or Marauder it does not have a impact on what you've done in the past on that character whether it was tanking or dps. Perhaps if the story had been impacted by the Advanced Class I'd feel differently, but because it doesn't I don't feel that it is as important to be stuck in that specific role.

Many people asking for a Open Beta and Release Date reveal at PAX.

IsaiahB3 on Twitter: What I'd like to hear most at PAX is system reqs. New computer or just new parts (ram, video card, etc).

Well, Justin, I was one of the 145 that voted for Romance as well lol But more because it is story related than for any other reason. More story = better game as far as I am concerned.

Oh, and Trade Paperback comes from the publishing business. It has faded, but in the past, think back the beginning of the Wheel of Time days, trade paperbacks came out even before hardcovers. The practice has faded in the novel business, but the comics people have picked up the technique for gathering series of comics into an omnibus type format.

I like how Pete said happy birthday to his sister, and then not only got scolded by Dover, but nobody else said happy birthday. Good thing Jeff was nice enough to acknowledge her.

    Happy belated birthday, Pete's sister!

Havent missed a PODCAST yet. But I wanted to say something concerning the (Crafting) while I understand one of your staff members points about just logging in an out and the actual act of being able to make something. I grew tired of (WOW's) system specifically. Spending hours killing mobs for something ie say cloth for tailor. So your cleaning up humanoids to make bolts. Then its gathering other mats either off the AH or instance runs for say an orb. Well long and short of it it became a job. Since most patterns were common you were up against the server. The epic plans were often in high level dungeons or gotten off Rep. Once you got the plans it took another arm and leg to craft. So it really became a task to craft. Most people I knew just gathered.....it was much easier. Crafting should be fun and not a job. I for one grew tired of doing the proffesion dailies for tokens to get reciepes/plans. Crafting became one big session in farming. Ironically there (Pro-Tips Clip) that shows just the frustration of farming in general!!

I have to say that DCUO did a lot of things right (and many things wrong..). Quite often i thought of TOR while playing. As mentioned one of the things that made me think of TOR was that everything is fully voice acted, not to mention there were many cool cutscenes.
Speaking of cut scenes i recently had my first raid last night in DCUO and it happened. I was sitting there watching an awesome cut scene, and had to skip it because everyone was waiting... One good thing though, which i think TOR should do as well, is in DCUO u have a list of all the missed "boss cutscenes". Meaning that after the last boss in alerts, there is always a related little comic-book styled cut scene with lore and other awesome stuff in it... these are rewatchable, so even if you skip it, you can just go back.. I hope I can find this in TOR too :)

Just a little note about the comic question:

I voted no. I understand the 'more is better' approach and really nothing against the comic as a format. I'd like to call myself as a comic fan. But maybe I'm getting older but those comics before were way too shallow. They can be dissected to have interesting little nuances and hints but as a story, character depth and developement, are... well... far not quite enough.

I felt the same when I waited for the Mass Effect collected paperback, bought it (was inasanely expensive) and then I was... 'That's it? All? Really?'.

So, in a way I'd vote "more, please, but if they are like that, don't push it, put that resources to the game, or collect it than make a nice, few hundred pages book, with real story and characters".

    Another topic - Class change.
You referred to it a lot so I think it's proper to correct: you can't change your class in WoW. Actually you can change everything else, faction, race, gender, name, only the class is absolute. If you chnage race or faction, you only can chose a race that can be that class.
Definitely becouse then people would change their classes as they change their build right now.

Regarding Aceldama's comment on how healing will be solo-able in SWTOR, that question has been answered by the Devs and honestly, I'm quite pleased with how they're doing it. When increasing your presence skill (the healing skill) be it gear, skills, etc., it also increases your companion's damage and defense. It allows you to add damage to the "low dps" problem many people have and actually allows you to HEAL as you level, not just use your damage abilities while being specced as a healer. So that problem will not be an issue in this game. Another fine example of how cool companions are! :D

It's hilarious that the guy who's skipping all the dialogue is most looking forward to romance.

    Great show!

Regarding item durability loss; I'm totally okay with requiring "scaled" monetary repairs to weapons and armor, as long as they don't incorporate item destruction. I can't see them implementing such a harsh durability system, since they have been preaching enjoyability, but just wanted to throw in that that system drives me crazy!

They should be able to avoid alienating new players by smart-scaling the cost of repairs with the quality/level requirement of the equipment. The systems designers will have a good estimate of the skill/experience of the player based on their armor, as well as how long they've been been playing to acquire each item.

    Love the site!

Regarding building systems right now. If you plan on building a new Intel based machine based on the new Sandy Bridge processors - hold off until after April. Intel just issued a recall to all of their motherboard manufacturers for faulty SATA plugs. I am one of the affected and lucky come April Newegg.com will be sending me a new motherboard, which means I will have to rip my entire computer apart to replace it - joy!

I don't think the special guest did bring anything to this podcast, it almost sounded that you had to explain lots of stuff about the game to him. Better to have a special guest who is on par with you guys...
