I'm in favor of the "no swimming" thing. I can't stand water quests/zones. Even zones like Vashj'ir in WoW drive me insane despite having a movement/underwater breathing buff and an underwater mount. Besides, who the heck can swim with a 300kg blaster cannon in their pocket?

Also there's a difference between wanting content that requires you to swim and wanting to be able to swim if we come across a lake or something. Right now, I'm thinking of seeing an invisible wall whenever I see a lake and I'm not a happy camper.

It has already been confirmed by the devs there are both no invisible walls, and no bodies of water deeper than a player model that can be interacted with. Meaning there will be ACTUAL walls keeping us from said bodies of water.

    Seeing an invisible wall?? :b
  • #39 darthuser3895
Heh I remember the good old EQ days, I had tons of fun swimming around or having to find monsters underwater. I always thought it was fun and added a lot to the game play, being able to swim around and just see a different world.

Though it's not a huge deal that it isn't going to be there at launch, I hope it does later on at least, esp. for the underwater planets / species.

But if you notice their responses to the no swim topics.. there will not be lakes you just come across. Waist deep and knee high water will be in combat zones where there is stuff to do. No invisible walls anywhere.

"Are you in favor of the way BioWare is designing the classes?"

I wish there was an indifferent option, but I voted No instead. I am old school and think trinity works. I've seen what happens when MMO's try to please everyone with hybrid classes and it causes more problems than it helps. However, I am always willing for a change and I hope that BioWare can pull it off.

"Do you like the idea of the Datacron feature?"

I like the idea of finding something, but I wish it was more random throughout the galaxy and not a continuous spawn for everyone. It seems like BioWare saw RIFT doing their Artifact system and decided "Hey, we need to do something similar" and this is what we got. I do not agree on the permanent stat increases as it WILL become a requirement for raiding.

They're not nixing the trinity, they're making it so that you no longer have to be "class X" to fulfill a specific role in the trinity. Having a setup where folks who prefer a given playstyle aren't excluded from a mojrity of the story content isn't a bad thing.

Re: The way BioWare is designing the classes

I am not in favor of completely removing a player's ability to choose character weapons within a class (or advanced class) Limiting a character to two or three options (pistols or carbine for the Commando, for example) would be fine, but no choice at all is weak.

This seems to be the first game I can remember where half of the classes will inherit weapon proficiencies from their base class but not be able to be effective with that weapon (or style.) Half of the Jedi ACs, for example, will have to stop using a regular lightsaber at some point after level 10. That idea seems to me to be so conspicuously bad that it is not likely to survive long after the release of the game.

Its not that I love swimming so much. I'm mostly concerned about the fact that Bioware couldnt figure out how to do it. I mean, come on, I could swim in the original Super Mario Bros.
  • #46 Socrates
That was also a side scroller. Not that it hasn't been done since then though. But, I can see that many people really liked swimming, and many hate it. I could care less if it ever gets put it, but it definitely sounds like a future project for them, probably built around a water planet.
  • #24 darthuser774
I despise water quests. As long as there aren't deep bodies of water dotting the landscape, forcing me to circumvent them, I won't be terribly forlorn about the inability of our characters to swim.

The stat increase derived from Datacrons is okay, but I would have preferred epic items that suit the level range of the zone in which the Datacron is found. Rift does this with their cairns. I think it's a better system because there is still a significant incentive for players to explore but it doesn't change end game very much since the gear would be replaced.

I think the problem with the no swimming is not so much the fact that you cant actually 'swim' specifically, just more the lack of freedom that no swimming implies and the limitations that come with it - ie exploration, making it feel like a real world, 'invisible walls' (even though it doesnt work like that currently in TOR), lack of content, etc.

Im all for the datacrons i think they're fantastic, and i think their rewards are a great incentive but not too overpowered (1 stat point in the grand scheme of things is incredibly minimal). I'm also all for the way they're designing the classes. I am, however, disappointed with no swimming (not necessarily swimming specifically, but my above explenation).

Think the swimming controversy is the result of a bored community waiting for a game. I don't care about what feature isn't in the game as long as:
    1. All implemented game features are high quality.
    2. There is enough interesting content to keep me engaged.
    3. The interfaces are accessible.
