BioWare Delays Mass Effect 3 to 2012

Today on the BioWare Social Network, Community Manager Chris Priestly revealed that Mass Effect 3 will be released within the first three months of 2012. Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series Casey Hudson said, "The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations."

Mass Effect 3 was originally slated for release in this year's upcoming calendar 4Q. This announcement comes ahead of today's Electronic Arts latest earnings call after the US market close. Darth Hater will cover any Star Wars: The Old Republic mentions in a live blog at 2p PT / 5p ET.

making room for SWTOR's holiday release? Don't need two of their products competing against each other.

This is wonderful news! I am glad that they are not going to rush this one like DA:2! It is also nice that SW:TOR and ME3 will (hopefully) be spaced out. It will give me time to digest them.

Conspiracy hat on... what if EA is shifting the ME3 team over to TOR team for a few months to help make the final push. They don't need to be in Austin to help. Maybe ME3 was exactley on track.

As big as ME3 is, SWTOR is the one that is by far the biggest potential pot of gold.

In my opnion all Bioware development teams should be on hold while they all put in the things that aren't going to make it a launch... like guild advancement, cantina games and many other "wall of crazy" items. Also expand the space game a bit. I mean why not? The success of this game could fuel 10 Mass Effects. This should be priority #1 for all of EA. Don't they see the billions this could generate and just making sure EVERYTHING is in at launch adds a greater chance of it happening. Don't take chances with "good enough"!

Am I the crazy one here?

I had assumed ME3 would be q1 2012, didn't both the other MEs come out in January?

is there ever a good time to release? 11-11-11 would be another release date to avoid (skyrim) but ill still be hoping for summer release coz im not in college but they could be perfecting swtor well into next year, i hope not. wat does the hater team think on a realistic launch date?

not surprised, it's the holiday season. while ME 3 can compete, it will do even better in terms of sales come Q1 13'

    Let's hope it's not THAT delayed! :P

It's going to be tough to play both SWTOR, and BF3 ;) and Who knows maybe another Modern Warfare.

    I know I wouldn't get any sleep.

Not at all a surprise here. Once TOR seemed like a Sept-Dec release, the calender became a bit crowded for Bioware. Releasing both TOR and ME3 at the end of the year would have been a strange move. I see TOR hitting in time for the holiday push, anytime after September really, and ME3 hitting in the first part of '12. Hopefully this just gives them even more time to make ME3 the best game ever. Please, please, please...

Agreed, while both TOR and ME3 are highly anticipated upcoming titles, bioware wouldn't release them at the same time this also gives them time to polish both games :)

    SWTOR Character Names:

Wound in the Force:: Avinoam (Lvl 50 DS Assassin), Gurion (Lvl 20 LS Sith Juggernaught), Adomin (LVL 33 DS Sentinel),Achinoam (Lvl 10 Grey Consular), Tzahala (LVL 14 DS Trooper),Juliraus (LVL 9 Grey/Dark BH)

The interesting thing is that you can go to Bioware's website and you can preorder ME3 already, but not SWTOR. It would seem if SWTOR were coming out first it would be availble for preorder already.

It is interesting, although I would point to the fact that the DLC/Pre-order situation for ME is probably much simpler than the diverse strategies available for a title like TOR.
  • #23 SithJanitor
I agree Frogsox, the dynamics of the marketing strategy must be complex and evolving on a daily basis.
Hopefully we all get the answers we want at E3.

Not to mention that they'll be watching all the other MMO competitors and what they offer etc and evaluate the success/failure of those strategies. Pre-order/DLC on games like ME/DA are pretty set in terms of strategy, not much has changed for those two series since the launched.

I'd love to see a bonanza at E3 in terms of information. That said, I'm not going to crash the hype train if it's not.
