A Million Voices Cried Out in Joy...

... and were silenced.

With the recent request for Game Tester Applications, BioWare has unleashed the full fury of the hype machine they have been cultivating over the past year. The result has been an incredible load on their servers; dramatic enough to bring the entire Star Wars: The Old Republic website to a screeching halt. With issues continuing throughout the evening, this could end up being a wonderful learning experience for BioWare as it approaches it's first MMO.

a new hope

During the early morning hours of September 29th, the official site for The Old Republic closed for maintenance. Speculation, from the previous days glitch, caused the entire TOR community to to wait with bated breath for the system to come back online. Sometime around mid-morning, www.swtor.com popped back to life like a droid powering on. However this particular morning, the droid had a new program. To the joy of everyone lucky enough to see it, a new game tester application link was added to the front page, proving all the previous days rumors to be correct.

In true Internet fashion, users from across the globe descended upon the site to make their own bid for the few coveted tester positions. Many aspiring testers had been following TOR for a long time, but recent exposure caused The Old Republic's fan base to swell to amazing proportions. With wonderful showings at conventions like PAX and Gamescom making this announcement all the more potent.

The website held strong for as long as it could, but the weight of the gaming community caused it buckle shortly after relaunching. This certainly is not uncommon for any gaming site when fresh information is added, doubly so for MMOs. However, this is little solace for the gamers that were unable to break through during the initial rush, who instead were greeted by a new message.

maintenance

No numbers have been released regarding how many users were able to successfully apply during the first rush, but anecdotal evidence points towards only a small fraction of the TOR hordes making it through. The remaining users have continued to assault the website ever since, hoping to catch it in a more stable state.

Throughout the day, gaming sites from every corner of the web picked up on the game testing news and passed it along to their readers, increasing the traffic far beyond what the hardcore community could produce. Even with this rush, a few users have been able to slip through during the occasional times the main site has been up. These times have been few and far between, but are becoming more frequent as the evening progresses.

This could end up being a wonderful learning experience for BioWare, as even they might not understand exactly how anticipated TOR is to the gaming public at large. With all of their fans coming out of the woodwork, BioWare can finally get the first real idea about the surge of bodies that they should be expecting come launch.

    Agree...

The Site is still under attack. This has to be the biggest news to date, yet BioWare says they have a "Major" release coming up in the weeks ahead. If BETA isn't "Major News", then I can only imagine what is coming in October.

UPDATE: Just checked this morning and the site does appear to be up for those who haven't been there yet. BioWare, wisely, appears to be keep the community site down to decrease the amount of traffic for those wishing to sign up. A picture of this can be seen here:

The second to last sentence in that picture is of the most importance. While it is fun and exciting to make the beta signups a reveal, warning the players that when you sign up makes no difference may have decreased the initial rush some.

Signed up during a brief period this morning. I had to re-enter my information 5 times as it kept sending me back a page when it lagged out on me.

But finally got it done. :)

Maybe this will inspire them to bring alot of servers into focus, come the fabulous day when the game will be launched. Aion entered the scene with very few, causing alot of people to wait good and plenty untill they could finally enter.

To all the people that have signed up or will sign up, I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you people can help bring us a great game :)

    i got to sign up..
but listen, just becaue the stability of the SWTOR web site was bogged down to the possible thousands..even millions trying to get on the site to sign up for the beta testing doesn't even compair to the stability that the bioware team has probly already though of with the new TORMMO comes out..just because the site is back logged no worries that they will have the same problem with the game lauches. Its biowarem they know what they are doing, and they have never dissappointed those who have ture faith in them.

so back off them with this worry about server stability when the game goes live because the Server Structures are complety different, and so are the systems they run to keep these things up.

They may have the technical where-with-all, but they're already making the same mistaken assumptions about capacity of any sort... this is just the web site, and that's totally different from the game infrastructure... but it's the same misstep most studios have made. "We didn't expect the amount of users..." This is bound to be the biggest MMO launch ever... I don't think there's even a way to OVER estimate! They should be erring on the other side of capacity planning.

Don't think any of us were worried at all about Bioware's handling of an MMO.
