Developer Dispatch: Designing the Dark Side

Today is quite a Holiday Present We get another Developer Dispatch showing how BioWare came up with the Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor, and we also get to see some PvP

Sean posted:

Inspired by notorious characters such as Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, the Sith Inquisitor and Sith Warrior take different approaches to their rise to power. The Sith Warrior achieves victory through pure aggression and might while the Sith Inquisitor excels by cunning ambition and Force manipulation.

From storyline, to art style, to combat tactics, each design decision was made to support the dark side themes of power, domination, and destruction.

Watch Developer Dispatch: Designing the Dark Side, and learn how Star Wars: The Old Republic developers created this dominating force

Happy Holidays everyone

I wonder if you can use both single and double bladed lightsabers (have both in pack) or if it's part of the whole specialising tree/character ‘style’ route ie I see skills saying that it requires a certain lightsaber to be equipped so wonder if what lightsaber you pick is heavily influenced by the each of the two set paths that your class can split into? Or perhaps it is going to be like a DA:O system where you can choose talents/skills from a range (like Warriors had sword/shield, dual blades, two handed sword, bow options etc) but for TOR it would be a FU opening up the type of lightsaber moves/skills meaning that you could still equip and use all types of sabers all be it to various degrees of mastery and available UI attacks.

But, very interesting video - lots to pull apart so can’t wait to get the QuickTime download!

"...wonder if what lightsaber you pick is heavily influenced by the each of the two set paths that your class can split into?"

That makes the most sense to me... especially if you look at how we divided dual wield v. single wield in the path choices for the Smuggler chart. ;)

Hi guys, first time I post a comment here but I often come here because this is a great site if you're looking for infos on SW:TOR.

Anyways, this new video show us actually a little more about how the game will work (first images ever of PvP, tatooine lookin very open etc.) and only makes me more impatient. I honestly can't wait to see more PvP as its the aspect of the game I think we know the least what to expect, since BW never made a real PvP mode in any of their games I think...

    Hi,
first off, happy holidays to everyone! im really happy, that even during the holiday season we got an update as good as this.

I noticed a few things, when people scrolled over various abilities that i found interesting.
I just want to point out a few things.

right now i am having difficulties with uploading screenshots (/cry) but i will have them up eventually.

the first thing i noticed was, on the Discharge ability, the last line says "can only be used if your lightsaber is charged"
I may just overcomplicate things, but i believe that this a secondary thing added to the force energy(?) that they already have

The second thing i saw was that an ability called vicious saber had a note at the bottom (as well as some of the other spells) saying it can ONLY BE USED with a double bladed saber. Basically this shows that the difference between lightsabers will be huge. I imagine that a single saber will resemble a 2 handed sword, the double bladed sabers will resemble staves (but usable for melee, so battle staves i guess?) and 2 light sabers will be like duel wielding 2 single handed swords.

The last thing, and least important, is that when the character engaged another player, a message popped up briefly in the bottom right (the same style as spell descriptions) stating that you have entered combat. Either this is a PvP only thing (since i did not see it in the demo videos for pve) or it is a new addition.

I hope some of this was useful, and again i apologiize for not having the screen shots, but as i stated, im unable to upload them at the time

Yea, I noticed that, initially it seemed more of a straight up fight, but the second portion the warrior did seem to be standing back. I think it might have been avoiding breaking CC also though...hard to say.

    soon (tm)

There is a LOT of information in here that expands on many concepts we speculated on previously, plus some new ones that we kicked around internally that we now have proof of.

Eml's theory is starting to falter after this came out. The board filled with dozens and dozens of armor types seems to be more than just progression wise. That is a FREAKING LOAD OF ARMOR DESIGNS! Good props on BioWare on customization.

The PvP combat looks very fluid. They are putting a lot of emphasis on the animations and abilities to define them more and their way of attacking. I did love the action bars. It reminds me raid mods where they are all lined up and set to go. I love that feeling of open space pvp, even though it might be a test sandbox to check out the pvp, or could be the Tatoonine planet terrain. The pace of combat is quick and nothing too delayed or "not in control" feel. I hope they update BH soon because this is only making more people follow the sith side even more and I want COMPETITION!! Lol, I know.. Sith is really going to be badass. Thank you BioWare!!

I hope DH Team have more to speculate now in their next few articles or interviews. :)

"Eml’s theory is starting to falter after this came out"

No, this video reinforced it. :)

When did we say you'd be stuck wearing the same outfit after choosing a path?

I confused myself after thinking about it. I'm getting tired of story to the point that it moves away from the actual mechanics so much.
  • #12 emlaeh
I'd imagine story is closely intertwined with combat. ;)

I posted this in the forums aswell:

The font used in the Interface is similar to the BankGothic font (http://www.identifont.com/samples/pa...BankGothic.gif). With similar i mean that it has some sort of rectangular patterns where others (like arial) have round shapes. For example take the number 8. In bankgothic it looks a bit like two rectangles above each other, in arial the 8 is more like two circles atop each other.

In the video at 2.26 and several other times, you see an SI in an idle position. The level of him can be barely seen, but i made a screenshot of it, zoomed in and sharpened the zoom a bit. Here: http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/672/41652755.jpg

What i think is notable is that the first digit of the level number is something like 5 or a 9, as there is clearly visible that no white (of the number) is seen in the lower left corner of the digit. If one now compares what can bee seen to what a 1, 2, 3 or 4 should look like (even as blurry as it is) he'll notice that it does not really fit. The most possible of these numbers is the 3, but for my share this looks rather than a 5 or 9. perhaps we can conclude that the max level is higher than 40, as this bears resemblance to a 5 or 9 much more than to a potential 1,2,3 or 4, with 50 being more likely than 90 of course.

    Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for linking to this... we're heavily looking into UI changes/differences. :)

Hi guys and Merry Christmas! :)

In this vid as far as I could tell, 3 new abilities (Vicious Saber, Backlash and Electrocute) as well as some abilities requiring a dual-bladed lightsaber (e.g. Vicious Saber and Discharge).

Lots of other stuff of course, many tooltips etc. In case a basic list with timestamps and so on could be useful to you as a starting point, please feel free to check mine out here: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=2236421#edit2236421

    Cheers
