James Ohlen on Endgame

A PC Gamer interview came out today that highlights what BioWare's thoughts are when it comes to endgame:

"We're looking at classic [endgame] systems, but we're also doing something brand new that hasn't been done in an MMO before. So we're going to mix those two together."

Olhen [sic] then got hushed by the game's product manager, but added that Bioware was keen for players to continue questing after hitting maximum.

"We want to make sure the endgame isn't completely different to what you have been doing," he said. "So there will be a natural progression... We want to make sure that when people play ToR they feel like they never run out of content... that it's an epic story."

Multiple lines of thought come to light when examining this quote. Perhaps it hints at a possible intertwining between questing and endgame and/or it simply indicates that there will be plenty to do once a player reaches max level. One thing is for sure -- this quote will only succeed in "wetting our appetites" about the future possibilities of endgame in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

For those of you wanting to take a dip in the pool of endgame speculation, we suggest you take a look back at the first two entries of our guild interview series. Both interviews with Ensidia and Afterlife contain valuable insight into raiding -- one of the many facets of MMO endgame content. The opinions of these experienced players may inspire you to look at the MMO endgame in a different light.

That would actually be pretty fun, if they have space added to it, it would be even better.

It would be nice to see some more talk about group dynamics in addition to end game.

I hope Ohlen means that TOR's raiding will be story-heavy too, if only to spite to the raiding type who don't care about story. Give them a hard decision to make in dialogue or something! I could see it now, somehow through dialogue giving 2 options: "Sacrifice half your group to knock out a lot of the boss's defenses and make it easier" or "Keep your squad but deal with a much harder fight".

Okay, maybe not that, but some story involved in the end-game! Not just WoW's system of "This guy is bad, so go inside that instanced dungeon and kill him".

While I doubt it'll be in "spite" of them, I do hope that endgame is highly driven by story.

Spite doesn't make for good game design decisions.

Someone else is feeling nostalgic for SWG's world pvp in its old days? I loved that, none of this instanced garbage. You had 2 or 3 opposing faction members have a fight in a neutral city, and they'd both call in reinforcements, till soon you had 20 or 30 on each side fighting it out and chasing each other across multiple worlds, sending scouts to find the other faction when they retreated to another planet. It was wild, the escalation and the combat crossing the galaxy.

That system was pretty awesome I am not going to lie. I remember when I heard about the Ahazi server galactic planetwide power switch when control went from Imperial to Rebel over a period of like 30 hours of constant attacking and fighting when the imps had control of the server for like ever and it finally switched to rebel. Wish I could have been on that server when that happened. Great times.

At least once more. Not to me mind you, but there are still those on the forums who disbelieve. Sad, sad creatures... :(

Very informative, Mr. Ohlen. I hope this is the continuing trend that would silence the retardation on the SW:TOR forums and the hatred fueled by emlaeh's rage against the trolls. DH team now needs donations to further investigate the game conventions to see what systems are in place. Send those $$$$$ to them! :P

"...that would silence the retardation on the SW:TOR forums..."

The only way for that to happen, would be to shut down the TOR forums:(
