The Old Republic: Smuggler's Vanguard

The official Star Wars website posted an original short story today by Rob Chestney entitled Smuggler's Vanguard. Rob Chestney previously brought us the Threat of Peace webcomic. The story focuses on Hylo Visz, a Mirialan smuggler known to us from the timeline series as the leader of the smuggler fleet that broke the Mandalorian Blockade.

There are many interesting references in the story. Planets referenced include Corellia, Talus, and Nal Hutta, as well as Hutta's moon, Nar Shaddaa. Hylo's ship is called the Crimson Fleece, and the supporting characters include a Nikto named Musk, Barrga the Hutt, and an unnamed Weequay.

The story contains a mix of action and subterfuge and fits the concept of the Smuggler to a tee. For more details, follow the link to the full story below. Hat tip to Jedidsm on the heads up.

The idea of independent factions with which you may have to build some kind of rep comes in my mind after this. In biographies section of the official site after all mentions them. That could be really nice offering some more quests or even selling upgrades or gear :D .

Maybe a bit off topic but do we know how big the plants/moons will be?

A lot of talk about Nar Shaddaa... Corellia stands out to me here. In the last Fan Friday, two native Corellian system species popped up in avatars, Drall and Selonian. In this story, Corellia is the main setting too.

Anyways, amazing story. I know Robert Chestney enjoyed putting hints of game content in Threat of Peace, wouldn't be surprised if he did so with this story as well.

From the story, a few possible hints I picked up:
-Possible planets/moons such as Corellia or Nar Shaddaa
-The amount of detail devoted to Hylo's ships suggests space vehicles
-Another example of a non-Force user class overpowering a Force user (appears Hylo took the stealthier Smuggler class specialization lol)
-Along the lines of stealth, disguises could definitely be critical in quests
-The decision to spare the Jedi could be related to the moral decisions that affect alignment
-Making shipments for the Republic could be a smuggler's way of earning credits while going from quest to quest or even be quests themselves (rather obvious for a smuggler)
-Possible playable species could be Nikto, Weequay, and Mirialan

"-The amount of detail devoted to Hylo's ships suggests space vehicles"

really the main discussion is, is there going to be player controlled space combat with ships. This is a star wars space oriented, as in many planets, Bioware game. We're at least going to have a Ebon Hawk/Normandy type ship to travel the galaxy and store our companions to get quests from them.

"-Possible playable species could be Nikto, Weequay, and Mirialan "

They'll at least be companions and NPC's

Should have clarified what I meant by space vehicles. Customized space vehicles, due to all the emphasis on Hylo's upgrades to hers, seem to be hinted at in the story.

Looks like it was only the prelude to the biographies section on the SW:TOR website.

Interesting. Not sure they will announce Nar Shaddaa as a new planet, since it's "just" a moon. Might very well be a zone of Nal Hutta

I would have to agree with this. I'm thinking it would have to be a rather large zone, however. Nar Shaddaa is in every single Star Wars game ever, it seems. They would really have to flesh it out to get the feel right. But, here's to seeing it in game!

I can only think of 2 games Nar Shaddaa has been in: KotOR2, and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2. It's definitely less prevalent than Hoth, which seems to be required by law to be in every SW game ever. I'd like to see Nar Shaddaa in TOR though, maybe as a dark parallel to Coruscant. Two city-planets, one firmly in the hands of the Republic, the other firmly in the hands of the Empire.

I would more say Nar Shadaa is firmly in the hands of the independents, they just let the Sith do whatever they want.

Nar Shaddaa has appeared in every single Dark Forces and Jedi Knight games so far (minus Academy I believe), as well as KOTOR 2, The Force Unleashed, and many many novels. And I would definitely agree that Nar Shaddaa wouldn't belong to any faction, but be completely independent. It wouldn't make sense for the Republic to have such a huge prevalence on a moon that is effectively and openly controlled by the Hutts and all forms of scum and villainy.

Still hoping for the Smuggler's Moon myself. Maybe as much as Emlaeh is hoping for Ziost...well, maybe not that much. ;)
