Update On Star Wars: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance

As reported on Club Jade, Random House revealed a description for the new Star Wars: The Old Republic novel, Fatal Alliance. The Sean Williams novel hits shelves on July 20, 2010. Pre-orders are available through the Random House online store, and the price listed is $27 USD for Del Ray's hardcover edition.

Description after the jump.
Tassaa Bareesh, a matriarch in the Hutt crime cartel, is holding an auction that's drawing attention from across the galaxy. Representatives of both the Republic and the Sith Empire are present, along with a Jedi Padawan sent to investigate, a disenfranchised trooper drummed out of the Republic's elite Blackstar Squad, and a mysterious Mandalorian with a private agenda. But the Republic's envoy is not what he seems, the Empire's delegate is a ruthless Sith apprentice, the Jedi Padawan is determined to do the right thing and terrified that he can't, the trooper hopes to redeem her reputation, and the Mandalorian is somehow managing to keep one step ahead of everyone.

None of these guests-invited or uninvited-have any intention of participating in the auction. Instead they plan to steal the prize, which is locked inside an impregnable vault: two burned chunks of an exploded star cruiser, one of which may hold the key to the wealth of an entire world.

But the truth about the treasure is dangerous and deadly. And in the end, Sith and Jedi, Republic and Empire, must do something they've never done before, something that all the agents of good and evil could never make them do: join together to stop a powerful threat that could destroy the galaxy.

"...join together to stop a powerful threat that could destroy the galaxy" leaves me with a heavy feeling, a tiredness, rather than a sense of excitement. I don't know why everything always has to be epic, and then get kicked up to more epic, and from there to legendary, etc. ad nausea.

The best stories are often the most basic, the most fundamental and human. Think of a WWII movie in the Pacific theater, after a naval battle two common sailors survive the sinking of their ships and wash up on the same island beach. One is Japanese, the other American. Why do they work together? Just to survive, because when the conflict becomes man vs. nature, they are united by their humanity. No one knows what will happen when they are ultimately discovered by one side or the other, which adds suspense.

If they work together to fight off a Martian invasion, that's not interesting unless there are special effects and explosions in 3D on an IMAX screen. Everyone already knows that the Earth boys are gonna kick the crap out of those Martian bastards, it's just a matter of cool imagery at that point.

I hope in the TOR game stories, they take it down a notch, and make things immediate and accessible instead of epic and cosmic all the time. In Knights of the Old Republic, it was great that I saved the galaxy and the Republic, but what I really cared about was saving Bastila.

I guess it should come as no surprise that it comes out two days before the start of San Diego Comic Con.

FYI guys. Amazon has the hard cover on pre-order for cheap right now.

They do need to set up some common enemy that both factions can fight in end-game PvE raids and whatnot. Fighting the other faction is for PvP. Doing so in a novel makes sense to me.

LoL, its nice to see we can all agree on some things :p

Im sure I am not the only one...but I'm getting itchy about some concrete content and gameplay in TOR.......speculation...schmeculation......

I was wondering why it was called Fatal Alliance. The description just seemed a little weird.
In any event, i'm sure gonna pick it up, but just as everyone stated, i hope it doesn't turn out to be some other mysterious force driving the Sith and Republic to war like it was in WoW with the Scourge, Burning Legion etc.

It could also be an excuse to make the conflict even stronger. They work together, end up betraying one another then they go back to war more aggressive than ever. One can only hope anyway :P

..."join together to stop a powerful threat that could destroy the galaxy"? Oh, come on - so what's on this auction, a Lich King? I don't want Star Wars: Joined Forces... Cause it's Star Wars. If you know what I mean.

    I agree.

As long as they keep it out of the game, I don't care if there's a book about an unease alliance between light and dark.
However, in TOR, an alliance should only happen between Sith, Imperial Agents and Imperial-friendly mercenaries (Bounty Hunter), and between Jedi, Troopers and Republic-friendly mercenaries/hired help (Smuggler).
To have an alliance consisting of Jedi and Sith is like having Aragorn and Legolas teaming up with Gothmog (an Orc) and the Witch-King. That should not be able to happen. This is Star WARS, not Star Peace. This is about the conflict between dark and light, and not dark and light vs. new uber-threat.
BTW, without reading any Star War-book: the idea of Yuuzhan Vong stinks.

I agree - it doesn't look too exciting really. I'll probably wait and hope that they can get Timothy Zahn to do a book or two - that would be much better I think!

I'm a sucker for Star Wars books, so I will probably pick this up. I might get the audio book actually. I like that the recent Star Wars books have been released as unabridged audio books, I hate feeling like I'm missing out on stuff if I just listen to the book on my iPod instead of reading it.

Yeah, the excerpt for this is a bit cheesy, in my opinion. Shame on the publisher, or whoever, for poor writing on that. The story COULD be intriguing, but you'd never know it from the dust cover teaser.

However, like others commenting here, I'll pick it up when it goes to mass market paperback, but not before.

I'll pick it up because I will be ready for a new book by then. I'm interested to see what goes on, who knows right?

Hmm, the common enemy bit, sort of like in NJO... Will probably grab the paperback eventually, but not exceptionally excited.
