Friday Update: Blood of The Empire Issue 4

Star Wars: The Old Republic official update this week is the Blood of The Empire's fourth issue:

In the fourth issue of Blood of the Empire, Teneb Kel begins his quest to find the Emperor's apprentice and learn the reason she betrayed her master. But a war-torn galaxy isn't always friendly toward Sith, and without a squad of Imperial soldiers to back him up, Teneb must rely on his wits and his lightsaber for protection. Also: what role does the Republic play in Exal Kressh's machinations?

Check out the latest issue of Blood of the Empire now!

In reference to hints contained in webcomics, BioWare's Sean Dahlberg said the following:

While we can understand some people may be frustrated, I want to say the vast majority of people will forgive us after E3 2010.

Also, there is information about the game in the comics (both in TOP and BotE) - in response to a comment above. While there isn't a plethora of meta-gaming details in there, there are some story elements you will run across when you play the game and some other morsels of info that some day you'll go "oooooooh" when you see it in-game.

Player housing, a level cap beyond 50, and space PvP without a problem.

I have a feeling the initial level cap at least will be a round number and a multiple of 15. Round numbers are pleasing for some reason, and the multiple of 15 bit comes from some videos ("Designing the Dark Side" I believe, maybe the trooper dispatch too) with cards indicating first 15 levels etc. So, I'm going with an initial level cap of 60.

As for what I would sacrifice, it would be player housing and space vehicles/combat. I'm really hoping for space content, but if it is not in, I won't be terribly disappointed.

I could do without..... ewoks? lol i don't know. I really don't mind how long it takes as long as it gets released. Rather they take their time and achieve everything they wanted. Having said that, the beauty of mmos is all the updates they get to put out.
And i hope they announce light-sabers at E3!! phhhwwing!!................................................jk. More about imperial agent hopefully but gameplay-wise space exploration.

Space exploration and the announcement that the first level for all classes is available for download?

Okay, just kidding. I would like to see Space Exploration, the confirmation of player ships I've heard rumor of, and possibly something PvP related whether it's space or ground or both.

I could do without housing and space combat/exploration.

    What would I sacrifice...my impatience.

I'm serious. I'm willing to give this game as much time as needed. If they need to push back the release date, then do so with my blessings. :)

    Haha nice. Good answer.

I will be down for (and fully expect to see) delays in this game to make sure it is top notch. But I don't want them to get all "Blizzard-like" and keep pushing off the game release over and over again. I'm hoping for 2011 or bust... No 2012 stuff.

To be quite honest your question is what fail mmos generaly DO. TOR is too long in production to decide oh shit lets cut some heavily planned stuff and rip just to get It out and get the money from Box Sales. There in it for long term Successful Game.

Also come from my opinion, I kind of disagree with you. They have said time and time again they want to make all the elements of the game flawless and seamless. To do that, they need time. And for all elements that are possible with this game, I don't think they have enough time.

But my thought is they will lock down a strong game base and mechanics, and implement more during expansions. I would find it hard to believe that all elements will be present at launch. That would make the game pretty staunch over it's lifespan if we can't expect to see some variance come in through expansions. You need the "flying mounts" add-ons later in the game's timeline to keep players interested. Although I think extra story content might be enough for some.

Once again, this just my opinion on how they will achieve a "long term successful game". What the @#$* do I know? Thanks for your input, brother.

Teneb Kel shows some light-side tendencies by letting Maggot indulge himself with the Hutt's servants/slaves and feeding the rats his left-overs

This looks tied to the companion gift system There was something similar in Dragon Age when you could visit a brothel and depending on your actions this would effect how the companions with you viewd you. I.e. the female members that you were romancing didn't like you sleeping with whores. And Sean mentioned there would be some game play hints in the comic along with saying he understood no game play up date this week would be disappointing, and this seemed to be one of them.

Is this also the first steps away from the younger market. With The Clone Wars Adventures being released by SOE are Bioware trying to go for a darker more edgy look to ToR. After all I don't think paying for your companions to sleep with prostitutes so they like you more is overly family friendly. The media seems to have a real hang up with that sort of thing as if its some how grooming youngsters yet killing 100 people is completely fine.

I think TOR will be more will be aimed at a more late Teens, early 20s demographic. People who play Killzone and Call of Duty and not really into the kiddy side of SW. But I still don't think they'll push the GTA limit when it comes to relationships.

Doubt it. They'll want to get as many people playing as possible. Theres gonna be A LOT of kids that will want to play this game so why miss the big money opportunity by putting something like prostitution into it.. Besides i seem to remember one of the bioware guys answering a question about decapitation or blood etc and basically saying they obviously wouldn't put it in because of the kids playing the game. Something along those lines anyway.

You could sleep with slaves in KotOR, and that had a Teen rating. Game ratings are mostly based on tangible things, like the amount of blood, nudity, swearing... the maturity of the story content doesn't usually factor in, as long as it's depicted tactfully. Bioware has always exploited this fact in its games.

I'm not a parent myself but I would imagine most parents would be against any sort of mention of prostitution in online games for free of grooming or the like. Doesn't exactly set a great example, yeah buy your friend a pro and they will like you more. At least for the early teen market.

Now rightly or wrongly there does seem to be more concern over such in the online gaming than single player games. Maybe due to fears about what sort of people your children are talking to on the net and what the content of that discussion would be. Now perhaps this is strange given on the other hand you are going out and killing a lot of people and yet it is some off screen antics that cause the uproar. After all look at Dragon Age which had an 18 cert still people focused on the sex scenes which were clothed and nothing really happened.

But thats the world we live in. So I wondered if perhaps if they are going to go down a more mature story line perhaps the rest of the game is going for a more mature look. And we might see realisticish battles and an over all move away from say the clone wars to the empire strikes back in the feel of the game.

Yeah, I read one of the devs somewhere say that they are shooting for the same rating the movies received. If you saw it in the movies, you'd probably see it in the games. So, no head decaptiations, but you might slice off someone's hand. Probably no sex scenes, but you might see a Twi'lek slave in a metal bikini sort of thing.
