Gamespot: E3 Star Wars: The Old Republic Hands-On

Gamespot posted an exclusive hands-on article of Star Wars: The Old Republic. The link to the article is located below.

Highlights after the jump.

  • "...in this case, we chose to forgo the conversation bonus and chose the dialogue option to do as A New Hope's legendary scumbag Greedo did in a certain special-edition DVD set: shoot first." - Much like the "kill the captain" choice, we see another example of a dialogue option resulting in a game action instead of speech.

  • "We're told by LucasArts staff that in the current version of the game, when dueling other enemies with blasters, you can actually carefully time your sniper shots to go off right when your enemies are reloading and avoid incoming damage." - Sounds like an interrupt system ala Mass Effect 2.

  • Imperial Agent is very deadly when in cover and can do devastating damage, but to do so - "...these cover abilities, while powerful, are also potentially dangerous to use because they require the agent to poke his neck out of cover for several precious seconds while acquiring his target--seconds during which the character is not in cover and may take a beating."

  • Tavus (from Threat of Peace), is the head of Havoc Squad/your commander as the trooper.

  • Ride inside of giant walker

  • Trooper class relies on ammo-similar/same as 'heat' mechanic for BH

  • Conversation bonus- Current placeholder for light/dark side points and/or bonuses from conversation.

  • Smuggler and Imperial Agent are vulnerable outside of cover and versus flanking

  • SI vulnerable during melee engagements

  • The "Shiv" ability is implied as being used out of stealth, in addition to the in-stealth example we saw last fall.

  • "...we performed a brief minigame to search for good spots to hide listening devices so that we could better eavesdrop on the slumlord." - Here we see the first mention of an in-game minigame, something rarely seen in MMOs

  • "In combat, the agent, much like the smuggler, can't survive a full-on frontal assault for long and must take cover. However, when behind cover, the agent's devastating sniping and lazing abilities seem to make it a highly effective support class."

  • "In battle, the Sith inquisitor definitely has powerful skills--and a lightsaber to boot--but seems to have trouble standing up to a melee onslaught from multiple foes." ..."the profession seems like it might be at its best with a bounty hunter or Sith warrior covering the front lines while the inquisitor hurls blazing electric death from a distance"

  • Sith warrior's "action point" mechanic now called rage points.

  • "...we couldn't Force charge every single enemy we encountered because our enemies were clustered in groups (the powerful leaping attack requires you to stand at a distance from your target)" - The Force Charge ability has a minimum distance, much like the Warrior charge in World of Warcraft.

  • "...en route to our superior, we encountered Vemrin, who confronted us and dared to offer us the choice to be his vassal." - This is a restatement of the "interrupting story" mechanic we noted last fall.

Imo those Troopers look like they are two different Advanced Classes. In the Savrip screen.

Could be companions for 2 players. A Trooper and a Smuggler partying, and their companions in the background attacking. It would make sense for a Trooper in a Squad to have at least one companion who is also a Trooper. That leaves Mr. Cowboy Hat as the Smuggler's companion.

And I like how they're up on top of the wrecked ship to attack. That alone would make combat more exciting in a group, fighting from various elevations. I've played too many quests and dungeons in WoW where everyone is on the same flat floor for a fight.

Pretty much shows that BioWare's efforts are quite superb in my book. If they had to write 4 pages about one game, I am sure DH will be writing 2-3x more with their every minute detail onto this game when they look into it at E3. Stay tuned to a long stressful week for the DH team, they'll need more tequila!

The smuggler's energy thing seems to have changed from what we last saw.

"These objects then grant various offensive and defensive bonuses while accruing energy points with basic attacks and expending them with advanced ones."

Last I remember, the smuggle automatically regenerated energy (the original BH did this as well). Guess it's still in development.

Is there a mirror for this video? The gamespot video isn't loading for me. It stops at like 90% :(

It's not a video, the one they had linked was EA's showcase for the European press event which isn't new. It is all contained in the article itself.

Heres some info about the Sith Hounds
Sith Hounds are canines who know guard tombs on Korriban, and were infused with the Dark Side via Sith Alchemy on Korriban, and than brought to various different planets, including Yavin 4. Sith Hounds were altered by Sith Alchemy which increased their already large size, added horns and doubled their brain size. So intelligent did the Sith make these creatures that it is rumored that they have mental capacity to speak sentient languages, though not the physical.

Gutted if E3 this year was just a round up of all the updates since the last one :P haha

My Favorite part of the E3 playthrough review " where smart use of your character's skills will seemingly make all the difference".

It would be nice to see 'facerolling' or easy combat result in a high Defeat percentage.

I am not asking for making peoples eyes bleed, but rather just hoping that combat is not so easy that it can be 'Botted' with a lot of success.

    Agree man :)

Do you guys think that the info here is what we should expect at E3 only? Or will we get something more? All of the developer comments building up to E3 make it sound like we will be blown away by what is shown. This information, while decent, isn't something that I would be exceptionally amazed by.
  • #61 chronium
This is what I expect from the gaming journalists at E3. But I do think Bioware will do something more with the site so we don't get annoyed.
  • #58 Drenarb
I'm expecting a lot more. Looks like their starting to share some of the playable races/species more, more game mechanic information and the likes. I'm expecting more reveals like playable

However, remember, that they are still marketing to the 'Never heard of TOR' gamers, so expect to see a lot of repeated stuff as well.
