Friday Update: New Timeline Entry, Playable Species Reveal

Star Wars: The Old Republic revealed the latest Timeline record, The Mandolorian Wars, plus a few more playable species: the Sith Pureblood, the Miraluka, the Mirialan, and the Zabrak.

Adding to the Twi'lek Smuggler, Rattataki Bounty Hunter, and the Chiss Imperial Agent, the classes are paired with the new species as follows:

  • Sith Pureblood - Sith Warrior

  • Miraluka - Jedi Knight

  • Mirialan - Jedi Consular

  • Zabrak - Sith Inquisitor

When questioned about the definition of the Zabrak's horns in the image above, BioWare's Sean Dahlberg responded with something interesting regarding character creation:

While we haven't gotten into Character Creation yet (publicly), there are a variety of things you can adjust and customize for each of the species.

Dahlberg later commented a bit vaguely about playable species restrictions:

There are combinations we haven't confirmed. James recently talked on this subject at Comic-Con International, though, and announced that there will be some restrictions. For the time being, the combinations we have announced you can count on. What other combinations will there be? That's an update for another day...
Official DevTracker announcement text regarding the species reveal:

So far we've only dropped hints about the range of playable species in Star Wars: The Old Republic. You may have heard about the Chiss Imperial Agent or the Twi'lek Smuggler, but we can tell you now that all classes will include optional non-human species.

BioWare also revealed the latest installment of the Timeline series, BTC 311 - The Mandolorian Wars:

The Mandalorian Wars included some of the bloodiest battles in the Republic's history. Mandalore the Ultimate's relentless campaign to goad the Jedi into open conflict cost the lives of millions. Though the entrance of a Jedi splinter faction into the war is perceived as the factor that turned the tide against the Mandalorians, the perseverance of Republic soldiers and pilots like Carth Onasi cannot be underestimated. Jedi Master Gnost-Dural's historical investigation analyzes the conflict with the perspective of modern events, highlighting the implications for the war against the Sith Empire.

Quote:
BTC 311 Too often, the Mandalorian Wars are characterized solely as a prelude to the Jedi Civil War, but the events surrounding the conflict itself bear close examination. When Mandalore the Ultimate called together the clans and began augmenting his armies further with Neo-Crusaders, his intention was to pull the Jedi Order into open conflict. As is the tradition in their culture, the Mandalorians sought to establish themselves as the most powerful faction in the galaxy by defeating the faction they considered to be their greatest rivals. Though the Jedi Council resisted the Mandalorian challenge, the splinter group led by Revan and Malak eventually joined the fray and won the war. Though there has never been a hint that the Sith were involved in the Mandalorian Wars, new analysis from Jedi Master Gnost-Dural suggests that the influence of the dark side was involved. The bittersweet victory in the Mandalorian Wars took a toll on the Republic for which the price is still being paid to this day

They seem to be stating reasons for placing specific species in specific roles (classes). I'm all for class restrictions, but I do hope there's going to be *some* overlap of a few species into multiple classes (besides human).

And I hope they can somehow get beyond choosing said species based only on which "fantasy" fans want to play out. Getting a bit tired of hearing about how you can play your "Han Solo" fantasy or your "Darth Vader" fantasy.

How about a nice unique, non-stereotypical character?

...Oh, hey look! Giant shoulderpads! http://www.swtor.com/media/screens/mirialan WoW, those are big!

One short thought: when see every next timeline video, I feel more and more something like that: "almighty great sith (specially look-like-living-through-centuries-who-have-infinity-patience emperor) can plan and outsmart everyone, can penetrate every structure and organization, especially poor, lame jedi, who can only fall to dark side (even two powerful when of course they meet emperor etc.)..."

It's just feeling I exaggerate this to better show, and there is no confirmation that emperor living centuries, and there is timeline #5 with epic jedi moments on Bothawui. Just feeling ;)

Space combat is an in rail shooter, this went out in a german magazine with the same info that pc gamer according to them.

It will be similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxHRWTPmvlo . This is disappointing in my opinion, i would prefer not to have space combat at all if its going to be like that.

Here is a screenshot and some quotes from the magazine:

If this is true, major bummer, dude.

I hope you will excuse me if I am not taking this news extremely seriously just yet. The site who made the write-up of the supposed article also claimed that Jedi knights could branch of in an advanced class that could choose between dual-wielding or double-bladed lightsabers, which... is pretty much opposite of what Bioware has been telling us these past few months.

Edit: Aaaand a secondary source screws up my hoax theory. Oh well, rails it is.

I'd like to see video of the Old Republic's version, but yeah, that would be disappointing if that's the case. I'd still partake in it if there's some RPG aspects (customizing your ship traits, story elements involved, etc.), but if there's not I would likely just avoid it for the most part.

There a link confirming that or is it just rumor right now?

I agree, I would rather have nothing and wait a for a SWG JTL equivalent

Did anyone else who watched the timeline notice the Sith present when Reven fought the Mandalorians about two-third of the way through the video?
  • #70
Yes, I was wondering about that... A Jedi fallen to the dark side? A vanguard of the Empire? Maybe the next report will shed some light...

Now all we need is mon calamari for the trooper. I want to be Ackbar! ^.^
  • #74
That would be great, but I guess they'd have to modulate the VO work for the Trooper class to make it work. I'd almost have to roll Mon Cal just for the comedy purposes of the fish-human love scene. I guess that would make me a "scaley" as opposed to a furry...

    It's a trap :P

But tbh, I really see it coming and I hope for it.

Mirialans... not my first choice, I'd have preferred Togruta. But I can get behind the green. Providing it's not too green (Mirialans are meant to approach pale human skin tones at one end).

A little bit of speculation here: What if Bioware uses the race/class restrictions as a form of origin stories? A bit like in Dragon Age and Mass Effect, a Miraluka Jedi knight would occasionally have people respond to him differently than a human one would, noting his apparent blindness and such. Or a Sith pureblood would have people groveling at his feet, where a human one would get a somewhat less excessive reaction.

I'd put money on that. I think it's a great idea. Maybe the characters in the game can't react to you by name, but they can react to you by class and race (hopefully) and that would go a long way to making TOR feel like a 'personalized' experience.
