PC Gamer Reveals Jedi Knight Advanced Classes

In addition to some space combat details, the latest issue of PC Gamer revealed the Advanced Classes for the Jedi Knight: the Jedi Sentinel and the Jedi Guardian. PC Gamer described the Sentinel as a dual wielding DPS, light armor wearer, while the Guardian is single wield "tankish" class, and can wear heavier armor. LucasArts confirmed these were indeed the names of the Advanced Classes, but couldn't provide any additional details.

The article states that Miraluka "will only be available for republic classes during character creation" and that Ohlen stated "But that's not to say that you can't have an Imperial player that's a Miraluka". I thought it was confirmed before there would be no faction swapping, then what does Ohlen mean?

Well I wanted to be a DPS jedi knight but I wanted to only use one saber. I had my fingers crossed that bioware would give you an option to either use a duel or a single saber for DPS but I guess not. With that said I guess I will be a tank because I really don't like the look of two sabers.

    Precisely.

Myself, I'll have to either be a tank (something I have little experience with), or settle for a look less iconic. We'll just have to see. It might actually force me to look at other classes, which should be interesting.

I still wish the DPS ACs weren't automatically thrown into the dual-wield role. I know that doesn't matter to a lot of people, but it creates a class-choosing dilemma for those wanting to be a traditional and iconic single-saber wielder, while at the same time not desiring to be or not knowing how to play a tank.

To me, dual-wielding is too flashy and adolescent, which now limits my choices. Yes, I know there are many others who love dual and/or don't care about character customization, but I do.

But I suppose I can explore a new class if need be.

It makes sense from a character design POV. What does more damage than one saber? Well, two sabers or a double-bladed saber. If someone's interested in doing damage, in any kind of RPG game, typically they're going to do so with multiple weapons or bigger weapons.

Semantics. One saber is already a two-handed weapon (your "bigger weapons"). If the amount of power put into your swings really had anything to do with damage, I would think the swing of a two-handed weapon would do just as much, if not more, damage than the two swings of two single-handed weapons. Yes, they're lightsabers, but this is an era where armor and swords may be resistant to a LS strike, not to mention other sabers.

Besides, it's not how flashy you are, it's how skilled you are (and, of course, if the Force is with you). I think I saw somebody with one saber do far more DPS than someone with FOUR! It was in a movie or something...

All that said, I was really referring to the idea of customizing your character and how you fight, and how I wish melee DPS wasn't forced into a certain configuration. Perhaps if the two skill trees of each Advanced Class were broken down into one method or the other, it would be different.

But, as I said, I'll just have to adapt.

One-handed sabers are the basic weapon in the Force-using universe. The double-bladed sabers are more like your broadswords, like some champion would wield. Dual-wielding is more like your typical berserker. The only thing the single saber wielders are missing are the shield, but as you may remember from the KOTOR games, the single-bladed saber style got bonuses in accuracy and defense. If you used a single saber in that game for your main character, you were basically gimping yourself, which you can still do in Old Republic.

And Obi-Wan did his DPS with a blaster against the guy with four sabers. And that movie sucked. Just sayin'.

Hmm, I seem to remember a couple hands being cut off by a single saber (is that not DPS?), and by the time the blaster was used, it wasn't against a guy with four sabers anymore. Just sayin'.

So that movie sucked. TOR seems to be more and more based on it. Just sayin'.

But anyhow, the basic weapon in the Force-using universe is a single TWO-HANDED SABER. One saber, yes, but not a single-handed one. So I'm afraid your argument is based on a fact that is totally wrong. Just to say it one more time, most Jedi and Sith using one saber are using it TWO-HANDED. When you see the JK running around in the gameplay video, how many hands does he have on that hilt?

But, as stated and ignored, I would like to be able to DPS effectively with a single saber. It actually makes sense if you don't throw a bunch of false statements at it and compare only to other MMOs. That's all. It's not going to happen, but I though I'd say it since I figured this was a place for opinions.

In conclusion, a single 2H saber is iconic. Double-bladed sabers and dual wield are flashy, which is cool for some, but less appealing for others (and some of those others want to play DPS). From an MMO standpoint, two blades should mean more strikes, but a single 2H blade should mean more damage per strike.

    ...Just sayin'.

I didn't ignore anything. I brought up specific examples of an actual game, not a movie, with how the lightsaber mechanics worked, and how they're being carried over to this game. Just because something is "iconic" doesn't mean it works within a game. It's iconic for Stormtroopers to miss every single shot they fire, but I sure hope that isn't carried over to the game for the Trooper class.

I'm slightly confused that Sentinels are going to be Dual-Wielding, since the Sentinels in the KOTOR series were all double-bladed saber wielders. I was thinking more along the lines of the advanced trees for Knight being Guardian or Weapon/Saber Master. I'm anxious to see what they have for the Consular now, because I doubt they'll have a "Jedi Master" class like they did for the Consular Prestige class in KOTOR 2. Won't sound too balanced to have some people running around as Jedi Masters while others are just Sentinels.

Has PC gamer hit shelves yet ? Id like to pick it up

I actually thought for sure that Sentinel was going to be the dps tree for consular.... I'm really wondering what the consular's trees will be now.

I guess this is why they named the class Jedi Knight in the first place. Remember the outcry about that. They couldn't name it Jedi Guardian because it was an advanced class.

I just hope the Sentinel won't be forced to wear too light armor - I'm not satisfied if I'm forced to wear only capes! I want some type of plate armor too! :-)

Dunno, what we've seen of the marauder so far seems to point that they wont.
