SWCV: Live Blogging From The Art and Writing of SWTOR

Darth Hater's live blogging from Friday's The Art and Writing of Star Wars: The Old Republic direct from Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando, FL and pictures of the progression of the concept art detailing a green lava planet after the jump.

After closer inspection of the last timeline video, we're leaning towards this concept art possibly being one of Malachor V. Stay tuned for more updates from SWCV, and come back tomorrow for a live feed from the encore panel.

  • 11:04 - Introduction by Proxy from The Force Unleashed

  • 11:08 - Hope trailer

  • 11:10 - Introduction of Drew Karpyshyn (Principal Writer, BioWare), Hall Hood (Senior Writer, BioWare), Arnie Jorgensen (Lead Concept Artist, BioWare) and Clint Young (Senior Concept Artist (Environments), BioWare)

  • 11:12 - Clint using Photoshop to draw a piece of concept art live; completion before the end of panel

  • 11:14 - Arnie: "making sure that the art looks uniform" on the team

  • 11:15 - Hall: working on Jedi Knight, Smuggler, and group content. "Game is not just solo content; it is about working together."

  • 11:17 - Drew: "pushing the story pillar."

  • 11:20 - Concept art they are drawing live is of a planet with a big sun, mountain in the background, and green sky. Looks like a green, rocky world.

  • 11:24 - Arnie: In reference to the planets, they are "marrying in the new with the old" and "adding more than just familiarity to the planets by breaking down the colors of the planets."

  • 11:25 - Drew: "Entire team needs to be immersed in Star Wars; we have to check out all of the source material and respect the material of other works."

  • 11:29 - Hall: "You don't always have to play by the rules (in your story), and if there is a class that doesn't, it's the Smuggler... proof of this is Dirty Kick."

  • 11:32 - Drew: "...story is evolving over time, we've rewritten it to get it perfect. We have a small character that is interesting so we decided to expand that and push everything out to play with them and expand on them. And our own experience to know what is cool and since you're working with a team on this and the great things they are coming up with...it is awesome."

  • 11:33 - Hall: "Smuggler and Trooper teamed up together is hilarious: Smuggler just wants money and the Trooper is all about honor."

  • 11:34 - Clint: "Drawing what I think will look cool to the audience, letting it flow."

  • 11:35 - Arnie: "We knew the planets upfront and seriously thought there were too many green planets, but every time we approach something (vehicles) we make sure that this lives in the place and time period. Same with the wearables."

  • 11:37 - Arnie: "Remember the board of the wearables? Each one of those are steps of levels."

  • 11:38 - Drew: "When you choose the Sith, they are not just mustache wielding villains; you can make Light side choices and go against your own faction. But there will be consequences, and things will be more difficult for you or better, you get to make all of these great choices that impact the story so much."

  • 11:40 - Hall: "Every story that we develop works with the other stories: we don't contradict the other stories, it all fits together like an interlocking puzzle, which is why we have to communicate back and forth."

  • 11:41 - Concept art now yellowish-green tint, big starship in the middle.

  • 11:42 - Arnie: We had this battle plan we went in with, and as the game comes together, we step back and make sure that it fits and reorg things.

  • 11:43 - Hall: Getting to play the game with my fellow writers, getting to play something that I didn't write, surprises and sense of discovery, cinematics, voice acting, music cues.

  • 11:44 - Drew: As a writer, the most fun thing is going to content that you didn't write. You hear this interesting story and when you play it you realize why they have that story and see these connections and how real the whole universe is. It is an amazing galaxy, feels like we've created something never seen before.

  • 11:47 - Q&A period starts. First question is "how many ships are there?" and response from Drew is "can't say."

  • 11:49 - Question about the timeline and continuity. Drew: Great thing about the timeline is that we carry on the legacy of KoTOR but we didn't want to be restricted by that. It's 300 years after so we can allude to things that happened in KoTOR but the most important thing is retaining that legacy.

  • 11:51 - Question: Will your morality actions have impact on the music?

  • 11:51 - Proxy: Can't really say specifically but the team has well over 5 hours of original music, not to mention the Williams music and KoTOR music. Changing music based on gameplay is a big part of that.

  • 11:52 - Hall: I can confirm this, we make sure there are music cues for that.

  • 11:53 - Question: Are there going to be stories written for the space arc?

  • 11:54 - Drew: Can't discuss that. With writers being involved along with the designers, we have a good sense of where the project is going but we cannot really talk about that but we do respond to what fans want.

  • 11:55 - Question: How will mutiplayer story interact with the other players?

  • 11:56 - Hall: Can't really answer that, but getting together with other players is always rewarding and you can experience your personal stories together along with stories that you both are the stars.

  • 11:57 - Drew: We have different levels of story, personal class story, above that ongoing epic story between the empire and republic and you will affect that at some point and we can keep a cohesive narrative together among the galaxy, you'll have to trust us though.

  • 11:58 - Question: Playable species are those exclusive to the classes that you released or can you play them on other ones?

  • 11:59 - Hall: We do have species that will be exclusive but there will be some that aren't.

  • 11:59 - Arnie: Purebloods would be restricted, for example.

  • 12:00 - Question: Is the game going to be complex enough where if youre playing the same class will be different enough to feel different person?

  • 12:00 - Drew: If you replay the same class with different choices, you'll get differences but we only have 8 stories.

  • 12:01 - Clint: Every time I play the same class, it feels different to me.

  • 12:01 - Panel ends.

I thought Malachor could be an option after the STWOR Combat Dev Video was released months ago. They were showing unkown concept/world art behind the devs as they were talking and at the end, there was this concept art of a black, grey, and green planet with jagged rocks that reminded me of malachor. Did anyone else notice that concept art in the background during the combat video?

What I am talking about is at 5:46-5:49 in this vid. I don't know if its Malachor, but its def a planet that has not been revealed yet.

And at 5:01-5:03 looks like another planet yet to be revealed. (Dantooine?)

And AGAIN at 5:21-5:23 another unkown planet concept art. (looks like a planet mixed between Dagobah/Felucia haha)

the concept art at 5:21 is Belsavis. http://www.swtor.com/media/concepts/belsavis-1

Malastare seems to fit parts of the concept art. In terms of its importance, Malastare had some valuable fuel according to the Clone Wars, and it also was a key spot on the Hydian Way (from Wookieepedia).

Raxus Prime could be another possibility, although I don't know if it has the same landscape as the concept art. The planet does have a poisonous surface. It has a more rich history compared to Malastare around the Old Republic era. In addition to some very early Star Wars galaxy historical references, it was a target during the Great Sith War. The Dark Reaper superweapon was unleased on Republic troops, but was disabled by Ulic Qel-Droma. The power source for the superweapon, the Force Harvester, still remained on the planet for millennia. Most know Raxus Prime by its technological waste-littered appearance from The Force Unleashed, but at this time, it will probably not be in this state.

Edit: Almost forgot about Zoidberg's suggestion of Vjun! Vjun does seem to fit the landscape with its acidic atmosphere. The acid rains were a lot of "fun" to avoid in Jedi Academy! Vjun's history during the Old Republic era has not really been developed at all and would provide almost a blank slate for Bioware to work with.

Lwhekk also fits the concept art. Greenish atmosphere with volcanic activity. Lwhekk was mentioned in KOTOR I on one of the lightsaber crystal descriptions, but it is primarily known for the Ssi-Ruuk species from the novel, Truce at Bakura. Lwhekk is one of the more vague EU planets.

Watch the Zillo Beast episode in the clone wars season 2.

    i bet this is malastare

That could be, but Malastare also has Jungles etc and isn't the flowing green stuff located under the surface of Malastare?

Still it could be, I just hope they stay far away from that horrible episode if so.

Malastare makes a a lot of sense. Story wise, it could be a contested world for it's substantial reserves of fuel. Not to mention it's located at a key spot along the Hydian Way trade route, which has been mentioned a few times already, particularly in Fatal Alliance

I could see that a Zillo Beast could be a potential end game boss for a raid
  • #41 gstommylee
it does somewhat look like malastare
  • #46 chronium
Except that green stuff is Malastarian fuel from somewhere nearby, a factory or something I can't remember exactly but it was meant to kill the Zilo Beast. The rest of the planet doesn't have this kind of look.
  • #43 AgentOP
For some strange reason, I would like to finally see Malastare. Or Serenno...Count Dooku's homeworld.

Are you staying all night Sado? Missed you after the interviews. Will you be around tomorrow?
