UPDATE 8/18: Advanced Class Names Revealed in Press Presentations
UPDATE 8/19: Advanced Class Names Revealed on offiicial site here.

Please note our original post included some inaccuracies specifically with the Trooper descriptions, missing information for the Bounty Hunter, as well as some missing description points. We apologize for any confusion: the slides were shown to us for about 20s each and our priority was to get the accurate names for each Advanced Class.

  • Imperial Agent - Operative & Sniper

  • Sith Inquisitor - Sorcerer & Assassin

  • Bounty Hunter - Powertech & Mercenary

  • Jedi Consular - Shadow & Wizard

  • Trooper - Commando & Vanguard

More information about the Jedi Knight advanced classes:

  • Sentinel: Dual Light Sabers; Saber Fighting Specialist; Melee

  • Guardian: Single Light Saber/ Heavy Armor; Leadership/ Party Buffs; Tank

Blaine Christine gave the presentation, and these were some of the descriptions for each class. As he introduced these slides, he gave the example of how you would turn into Darth Maul: you pick your species as Zabrak, and as you level up, you are presented with the option to become a Sith Assassin. "The Assassin is going to be able to use a double bladed lightsaber just like Darth Maul. He is going to do a lot of damage, so that is his main function." He continued with a description of the Sith Sorcerer: "He is going to be a lot more like the Emperor; more ranged based. He will still use his lightsaber, but he is going to use Force Lightning and focus on that to fry his enemies from afar."

Then as a comparison, the Jedi Knight was touched on. The Sentinel uses dual lightsabers, was compared to Anakin Skywalker, and has a focus on dealing lots of damage with fast moves and action. The Guardian was described as a "traditional MMO tank" by wearing heavier armor, and the ability to soak up lots of damage.

Please note all the Advanced Class names were communicated in English along with the entire presentation, and we will update this post with more details as we receive them. We are committed to bringing you the most accurate official information coming out of Gamescom.

Shortly after the announcement of all the classes, we received another version of the multiplayer group demo that we originally saw at E3 -- but this time, all the Republic characters were playing Advanced Classes. The Jedi Sentinel was the dps off-tank, while the Trooper Commando was ranged tanking the large mob. The Smuggler had the Gunslinger specialization, and used portable cover while dual wielding blasters. The Jedi Consular chose the Wizard advanced class, and provided both healing and light crowd control.

New Space Combat Information

Space combat missions take place in "Hotspots." You will gain space combat-related rewards for completing the missions, which are based on typical scenarios from the movies.

Hands On Gameplay

All classes available for play at Level 2 except for Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular. Different build than at E3, but it seemed more about graphical improvement.

To paraphrase Shakespeare: What is in a name? A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.

I can understand some people's gripe about the names. I even had a brief WTF feeling when i first read some of them, but it was quickly dismissed. Sure i will be called a sorcerer or something (Caster Sith Inquisitor), but i still can do all the things i want to do with my character. Call me what you want, but if you get on my (character's) bad side.... you will still get a taste of my UUNLIMUHTEEED POOOOWAAAAH! I guess this is an issue for the more serious role players, but to my understanding, if you are that serious at role playing, you will have made up a backstory and name for yourself anyway.

TOR will be a great game, but i highly doubt it will be the be all end all of Star Wars games (at launch, anyway). I say just let them do their thing. They have to check in with Lucas Arts about every piece of information they put in the game. I get the impression they want it as close to cannon as possible. Lucas Arts won't let them destroy the expanded Star Wars Universe. Plus, when you finally get loaded into Tython (assuming this will be a JC), most of the problems mentioned on the forums will seem less significant.

Long (er) story short, i think this will be an overall great Star Wars game. There may be some pros and cons, but overall, i think it will be the game many Star Wars fans have long waited for.

Not if it was called stinkweed
  • #162 AnthonyEBonds
If you are referring to a rose, then yes, it still would smell exactly like a rose does. The name we assign to a certain thing does not affect said thing's physical attributes.

If you are talking about classes in the game, the same principle applies. Your character will play the way you have built him or her to play. The character's attributes depend on how you chose his or her skills, but does not in any way depend on the name of your character. As some of the posts in the original forums point out, there is precedence in the Star Wars universe for these names. Do i like the names? No, not all of them. Do i care? Not really. True, it is weird to be called a Force Wizard, but do you really think that will decrease your ability to provide support for your team? I highly doubt that will be a problem.

As one of the posters on this page said, it really seems like people are nitpicking over this. The names are not so bad that they should cause an uproar nearly equal in magnitude to the space combat disagreements. It just seems like so many people are not grateful for the amazing game that we will be getting. I never realized people were so hard to please. Now i'm not saying to just lay down and take whatever Bioware decides to give us. All i'm saying is to chose your battles. Bioware cant win for losing.

To quote a Futurama episode: When you've done something right, people won't be sure you have done anything at all.

That isn't true. Sure the chemical composition of the Rose doesn't change, but the human mind is a strange thing. It can turn sugar pills into medicine. Expectations effect the outcome. Shakespeare was no a psychologist (Not even that good a writer IMO).
  • #175 AnthonyEBonds
Touche. I remember that there have been studies using placebos that humans think give them the benefits of the actual medicine that is being tested.

But like you said, the rose's chemical composition will not change. There will inevitably be one human that walks closer to this "stinkweed" by accident or some other turn of events and discovers that it is a sweet smelling flower. Yes, you are absolutely right that the human mind will affect the outcome based on the preconceived notions of the person experiencing the situation. What kind of problems can be cured by the placebo? From what i remember, they mainly use them for pain or depression medicines. It seems like they use them for ailments that have some type of connection to the mind. Your mind interprets some sensory inputs as pain. Your mind also interprets emotions. It would make sense that the degree to which we experience pain and depression can be controlled by our minds. I do not deny that. But try to use a placebo on someone that has a heart condition or something serious like that. Psychology cannot change what has already been done. If you have cholesterol encrusted arteries or high blood pressure (which could be one in the same...im no doctor), the mind cannot change the physical condition of the heart. Placebos are only to treat conditions that are much less threatening than the patient believes. If you have any evidence to the contrary, i would love to be proved wrong, because that means we as humans have an even greater potential than i realized.

To your Shakespeare comment, i never said he was a great psychologist nor a great writer. All i did was use a quote from something he said (or wrote). I actually don't care for him much either. I just like some of the things he said, and this was one of them. Despite what the mind fashions into its own truth, the world, nay, the universe could very well have evidence to the contrary. The earth is round, after all.

That's all i am saying with these class names. Yea they do sound silly. I agree with you whole-heartedly on that point. I just feel like this isnt as big of a deal as people make it out to be. If the names get changed, of course i will be happy. But if they dont, i guarantee you i will definitely be playing this game if my financial situation permits. Something as trivial as a silly name will not stop me from playing one of the best Star Wars games i have ever seen. No it is not out yet, but even with the information we have now, i challenge you to find a more in-depth project. Scores of music have been created specifically for this game. Several movies worth of dialogue has been skillfully read for this game. The famous Bioware morality system seems to be successfully implemented in this game. (They seem like they will even change the kind of force powers you gain access to depending on if you are light-sided or dark-sided...no matter the faction. Inference comes from the newest Daniel Erickson interview.) Again, the main point i am trying to convey is CHOOSE...........YOUR.............BATTLES (I was not "screaming" here. I only did that to emphasize my point. Lol all in the spirit of the debate.).

This is my battle. I've been arguing against Jedi Wizard for almost a year. Ever since someone suggested the other jedi class would be called Jedi Wizard before Consular was announced. If I could I'd change several things to be more like this:

    Trooper - Commando
    Trooper - Vanguard
    Scoundrel - Gunslinger
    Scoundrel - Smuggler
    Jedi Knight - Guardian
    Jedi Knight - Sentinel
    Jedi Sage - Shadow
    Jedi Sage - Consular
Mercenary - Enforcer, Raider, or Warlord
    Mercenary - Bounty Hunter
    Sith Warrior - Juggernaut
    Sith Warrior - Marauder
    Imperial Agent - Operative
    Imperial Agent - Infiltrator
    Sith Inquisitor - Assassin
    Sith Inquisitor - Sorcerer

But if I could only fight one battle it would be stopping Wizard from making it into the game.
  • #209 AnthonyEBonds
No doubt. Please do me one favor. Fight for it because you legitimately want it changed. That is all i ask. Again, i personally don't care about the names, but i can see your point. I didn't realize you had been trying to fix this for almost a year. (On a side note, how could you know this was something that needed to be defended a year ago? they didn't even release the advanced classes until a couple of months ago...i am not even sure many classes beyond the bounty hunter and smuggler were released then, but i digress....) I guess i just don't want the community to be seen as a pack of ravaging wolves, you know? I say that because of the space combat disagreement (some were so disappointed that they made a pdf file to be printed out, signed, and mailed to bioware petitioning ships be taken off of "rails"), and now so many people are giving bioware s@#* for these names. I guess my paragraphs won't do much in the way of changing the community's opinion on the matter though. People will do what they want. With all that said, fight on, Vanlan.

AMAN. PPL don't understand that BW's KotOR Became Cannon. George liked it that much and ToR will be Cannon. This isn't just any MMO this is living SW lore. So it makes a Big Deal out of little things. If this was SWG just a Joke in SW's cloths it wouldn't metter. But this is Cannon.
  • #120 Vanlan
Wizard?!?!?!?! F****!!!!!!! This ruins my whole day. :(
  • #126 InvaderMig
What's the matter bro, not a fan of Harry Potter?
  • #132 Vanlan
Sure I do ;). I also like Discworld and Wheel of time but I don't want Sith Iconographer or Jedi Channeler

Edit: Actually, I would prefer Jedi Channeler to Jedi Wizard.
  • #193 Elkesai
I would prefer Jedi Meat Popsicle to Wizard.
  • #213 Daveedinator
The last class poll I saw, Consular was the most popular Republic class (instead of the Trooper, which deserves the top spot). Obviously BioWare realized this and wanted to curb people's interest in playing the Consular with this move. BRAVO BIOWARE, BRAVO!
  • #119 Boreback6
how bout we name the JC classes douches and turds
  • #127 InvaderMig
I have to say, that would be an improvement.
