Friday Update: More on Space Combat

BioWare's Joanne Laroche announced some more Space Combat details as part of its launch as a information page in the official website's Game Systems section:

Blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, and a variety of other obstacles as you encounter fast-paced Space Combat missions in Star Wars: The Old Republic. In these occurrences, you'll fly your personal starship to various hot spots on the galaxy map and experience gameplay that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars space battles.

For anyone who may be interested in how the rail shooter may feel try out the mini games and the rail shooter they have at the clone wars adventure web based game. And most important, it is free.
I am fully expecting the TOR one to be better. But if you are looking for some fun and a place to let the time to "fly by" while we await 2011.
    Check it out.

"The Old Republic is designed to make travel times literally fly-by, while combat runs and space battles put you in the pilot's seat for a fast-paced and highly cinematic experience."
So this kinda sounds like you'll be able to do missions while you travel from world to world. If that is true i'd be happy. Always hated the long flights in other mmo's with nothing to do. At the same time everything else the developers have said about hotspots and space combat being optional it could be that I misunderstand this sentence.

this is debatable since it can be interpretted in different ways...

as for traveling, I really hope there is an option to travel in hyperspace and go craft down below in the cargo bay or meditate in my quarters. not much of a RPer but that sorta thing is cool to me. I don't want space travel to be instant, tho an option to make it be that is fine, also I don't want space combat to be possibly forced upon us. I plan on doing space combat but forcing the player to do something is hardly ever good for the game...

Hmm... traditionally "update" often implies "new content." I guess making a new page with the same video we've already seen is technically an update, but I feel they're stretching it.

I think they are still living the daydream that everyone is really really excited about their Space Arcade game, so they figured everyone would be cheering wildly when they see the same awesome and amazing Space video. :-/

Yea, while I'm a lot happier there's some space flight (as opposed to none), I'm still kinda underwhelmed.

The best way I could describe my feeling towards their system is, restricted.

I more think they didn't want to do a new reveal on Friday because their presentation is on Saturday.

I like how they speak of getting rewards from space missions, even point you where to go to learn more, yet there is nothing listed.... nothing. again, a lack of details from BW's stupid marketing team

I first looked at this update about an hour ago from work, using my phone. I didn't see anything regarding rewards either, and just thought that maybe it was because I was not seeing something as it was displayed on my phone.

I'm home now and like you, I'm still not seeing anything regarding rewards. Unless of course you count this as being the promised info:

"By succeeding in these missions, you'll obtain rewards that will be useful in other aspects of the gameplay experience."

    precisely
if BW wants to promote space combat, all they have to do is reward players with different armor drops. anyting that's unique like that will make players flock towards getting their hands on it. that or weapons or anything that affects the ground experience

I REALLY hope that they keep any and all Space 'Mushrooms' and 'Spining Gold Coins', limited to 'space power ups', and 'additional space lives' - and completely sperate from the ground game.

There are people that obviously dislike the space arcade design, so they should not feel excluded in getting items for the non-space game, if they choose to completely avoid the Space Arcade.

They're going to keep the ground experience and the space experience separate; it's been elaborated on many times by many different devs that you won't get high end 'gear' from doing space missions. My speculation is that it will tie back to crafting: you'll get certain (possibly rare) materials that you could feasibly craft into better spaceship parts, used in making gear, or to be auctioned off to make a profit.

scenario: you finish a SC mission and get both ship parts and mats to make cooler ship parts through crafting. You take them to the mechanic to get them all kitted out, install them, and then go back out and do more SC missions to get different rewards.

If you keep pigeonholing this game into what you want it to be, rather than what it's actually going to become, you'll concentrate less on all the stuff that you actually do like.

I just hope it isn't completely walled off from the ground parts like SWG's. One reason SWG's space combat is so polarizing(either you love it or you hate it) is just because it's so firmly divided from the ground, seemingly based in an entirely different engine from the ground, like a whole different game. No ground loot in space(with the exception of the Black Sun Helmet) and not space loot on the ground(except quests that send you into space and 2 or 3 other exceptions in the Rage of the Wookiees expansion). I hope TOR diversifies it, giving space rewards on the ground and vice-versa to make sure it's all part of the same game. Learn from SWG!

    yeah I'd support that

I'm not really a massive fan of the 'Game System' pages... do they actually ever tell us anything new? Not in my opinion... For example, the 'Companions' page doesn't give any details that we didn't know about six months before the page appeared! :)

Hey, I still love the look and sound of the game so far, but those pages really have very little substance in my opinion!
