Dissected: Mysteries of Knights of The Old Republic

Our working dissection of the Mysteries of The Knights of The Old Republic is after the jump. In addition to the hints of learning what happened to Darth Revan and a glimpse into his compound (plus the appearance of HK-47), this particular video gave us the first look at high level Sith Empire group play with more than two players, and included companions. We decided to use a slightly different approach in this dissection, and concentrate on the behavior of the NPC AI to see if we could gain some insight into aggro ranges. If you are interested in a transcription of the video, then click here to read a version contributed by Darth Hater forum member Snodge.

As always, content that is covered in past dissections will not be covered in this one but feel free to take a look at our past dissections for reference. As with all dissections, we will be adding stuff on the fly so make sure to check back here for updates, meatbags.

There is some discussion as to why we called the Sith Warrior featured in the gameplay footage a Sith Marauder, so to clarify why:

swarm

  • The messaging of the multiplayer demos seems to be one of any group of four, regardless of specialization, can get things done given the combination of Advanced Classes and companions present.

  • The developers stated multiple times the Sith Juggernaut is inspired by Vader, and to implement that fantasy, he is going to be visually identified by variations of heavy and extra heavy armor.

  • In contrast, the Sith Marauder doesn't wear this super heavy armor; he instead wears variations of medium armor -- visually different than the Sith Juggernaut.

  • The lightsaber restrictions were stated as a distinction between the Sith Assassin and the Sith Marauder; only the Sith Assassin could use a double-bladed lightsaber.

  • The developers stated the Sith Marauder dual wields as a distinction from the Sith Juggernaut, who single-wields. We can speculate that the Sith Juggernaut, because of his heavy and extra heavy armor, will always single wield, but they never said the Sith Marauder couldn't do damage with a single lightsaber.

  • However, we realize the developers didn't make any definitive statements about armor sharing between the two Sith Warrior Advanced Classes, and the possibility exists that the Sith Warrior featured in the video might be a Sith Juggernaut wearing Sith Marauder armor pieces -- but it doesn't make much sense, as it seems the majority of the classes in the party composition are damage classes.

What the hell is a Sith Assassin?

Also noticed that at 1:08 in the movie the generator looks similar to the concept art here: http://www.swtor.com/media/concepts/underground-generator-concept

Just saw something you might have missed: at 1:21 into the video (about), you see "Skipped 2/4" and then "Skipped 3/4" appearing below the character portraits on the bottom left of the screen.

Which can indicate that it matters how much of the dialogue in a conversation you skip.
  • #93 emlaeh
We actually have the frame captures of those two instances of the dialog skip, but it looks like it was done so they could get a specific dialog outcome for demo purposes.

Couldn't figure out if it was useful or not because the dicerolls didn't change.

Look at the BH's hands in picture 12 of the dissection. HAS to be a race yet to be revealed. They look really alien. Pointy claws anyone? lol

They had to have left gloves off the BH for that sole purpose, all the other characters are wearing gloves.

    ITS A GEKTL!!! lol

I R is wondering if it is just some fiendish costume design by Bioware to misdirect us... after all, whoever heard of reptiles with breasts...

If you'd seen the whole PAX presentation video, you'd know that this video shows progression of armor for player characters as well as their continuing advaentures that culminates in the group of 4 Sith Empire players going into battle with the 4 Republic players in the Alderaan PvP warzone.

Ok, so now that we've established this, remember earlier in this group of videos when the 4 Sith Empire players were doing a mission where they were outside at night in a lightning storm talking to an imperial that wanted them to steal data.

This group of 4 Sith players were a short & stocky female Rattataki Bounty Hunter in yellow/blue BH armor, a tall & muscular male human Sith Marauder/Warrior in black/red armor, a skinny possibly human female Sith Inquisitor wearing a hood & long skirt & finally a tall & skinny Chiss male in a black/yellow outfit. This group of 4 Sith players fought guards outside of a building, went inside & killed everyone in the building & then reported to the white male human Imperial questgiver outside that they were talking to earlier, telling him they've completed stealing the data.

So they next time we see this group of 4 Sith Empire players clearly, they are wearing different armors/outfits in the MYSTERIES OF THE KNIGHTS video, getting ready to be sent on the Darth Revan mission.

Now this group of 4 Sith Players are a short & stocky female in ill-fitting Bounty Hunter armor also wearing a helmet this time. This is your Rattataki female from previously, who we saw earlier in the other set of yellow/black armor was helmetless, bald & clearly a short & stocky female. If you see pointy claws on this female Rattataki, she is probably not wearing gloves or the gloves of this particular BH armor set look like "pointy claws". This is not a Gektl, no matter how much you & I may want it to be so. The rest of her group is represented in the MYSTERIES video too.

The Sith Inquisitor skinny female we saw earlier that had very tiny breasts is now wearing the Mardi Gras SI outfit, her face is once again concealed behind a mask this time instead of a hood. The outfit she wears now is totally ridiculous.

The Sith Warrior/Marauder that is a muscular human male that had the Clone Wars Animated style clonetrooper haircut is now wearing a hood & helmet, giant spikes on his shoulders & all the rest that fully covers him in armor.

The Imperial Agent is still a tall & skinny blue Chiss that clearly has the same face as he did before in the earlier mission, now he is the only one of this group of 4 Sith Empire players who's face isn't covered. He has on a helmet, white & black IA outfit & still seems to be taking command in this group of 4 players missions as he does most of the talking.

I hope you understand the bigger picture here now & why it is that the Bounty Hunter you saw in the MYSTERIES video can be nothing other than a female Rattataki.

I was in the theater as it was being played, i was 8 rows from the front... anyways, look up the Rattataki, they do not have pointy clawed, alien looking hands. They have hands that are human looking. In fact it appears the hand pictured has less than 5 digits. Here is a video SHOWING a Rattataki BH and her hands.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8xf7OXQh1c&feature=related

Also, go back and look at the "armor progression" video shown for the BH http://swtor.com/media/trailers/armor-progression

The last armor set in the video is the same one shown here, and it HAS gloves. As does the Rattataki shown in the above video.

On a side note, the Gektyl comment was mostly a joke, hence the "lol" and was only said because the main Mandalorian BH in Fatal Alliance was in fact a Gektyl. Also, you could have made your response in less than 100 words....lol you spent an awful lot of time on that post for no reason.

I tend to do that, not knowing that who I speak to would have all the facts. My bad.

I've got some pictures saved of this Bounty Hunter armor set & have looked them over too, so yes I knew about the gloves, I almost added the pictures I have saved of it into my seriously long post. ;)

So you could be right that the short stocky female Bounty Hunter in the Mysteries of KOTOR video isn't the Rattataki seen with this same group of players should earlier in the group of vids shown before at at PAX, but it would just seem weird to me for BioWare to replace that one character while keeping all 7 of the other Republic & Empire characters from those series of videos, so I kinda find it implausible that she is a different species than Ratti.

What is weird is that in the picture you used to show this female Bounty Hunter with weird hands as proof that she's another kind of alien, is that her hands & blasters mounted on her hips are clipping through her armor in that video, so maybe I think the clipping messed up the animation on her hands temporarily confusing you about the number of fingers?

It'd be nice if you did find proof that there was indeed another species for the BH class besides human & Ratti, but you'll need more proof than just some strange looking hands, especially considering that all the armor sets in SWTOR are modular, not 1 piece, so she could just be wearing gloves from an entirely different set as another possibility.

Here's a picture of another skinnier Rattataki in that armor set, the best one I could find showing the gloves. Compare them to your pic & see what's up.
  • #89 Chrohno
Ok I retract my speculation, just was shown this picture. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10210644/bhmok.png

Her fingers look pointy because of the thing hanging on her belt in that picture.
  • #90 Tricky
Very nice detailed pic. Thanks for showing it to me too, your speculation did give me some doubt & possible hope that you may have found proof of another species.

Man, it's tough playing the guessing game with BioWare...
  • #78 abner_ford
I don't know much about Rattataki, but it's probably them since that's the race they seem to be heavily marketing for the BH so far.
  • #79 Chrohno
For all intensive purposes, minus the skin color and facial markings, the Rattataki have human features. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Rattataki

Those are definitely not human hands. And why would all 3 of the other characters be wearing gloves to complete their armor sets, and yet the BH is left without gloves? We saw this armor set in the combat video, and there it had gloves.
  • #83 Lovezombie
    Could be a female Trando.
  • #87 Chrohno
Thats what I thought when I first noticed the hands. But that reply that Daniel Erickson gave on the official forums in regards to very alien races made it pretty clear that Trando's and Wookies are out of the picture.
