The Battle Heats Up on Alderaan

Today we're treated with an action packed Alderaan Warzone video, previously unveiled yesterday at EA's Winter Showcase. The warzone on Alderaan was first revealed at E3 2010, but little information was provided at that time. For a better description of the warzone's game mechanics and some elaboration by BioWare's Blaine Christine, look no further than our recent Winter Showcase Coverage.

The original forum post from Joanne Laroche as well as the embedded video are after the break. A dissection and analysis of the update can be found here.

Also posted with this update is a community poll to replace the Jedi Consular Wizard's name as well as new information on the Jedi Consular's class tree. Currently Jedi Sage appears to be the front runner, so if you haven't seen the poll yet and would like to weigh in, cast your vote now.

Alderaan Warzone update:
Joanne Laroche
Officially a neutral world, Alderaan has become the focus of Republic and Imperial political maneuvering. Even as conflict between Alderaans noble houses threatens to turn into civil war, Republic and Imperial forces engage in a secret battle that could decide the planets fate. High in the mountains, both sides fight for control of Alderaans massive planetary defense cannona weapon powerful enough to devastate an enemys fleet and ensure domination over the planets skies.

The battle on Alderaan is our first detailed look at organized team Player vs Player (PvP) in The Old Republic. To secure the planetary defense cannon, players must deplete the enemy transport ships shields, driving their forces to retreat or be annihilated. Players must work together to control the defense systems artillery units if they are to protect their fleet and emerge victorious.

Well be offering more insight into how Warzones work in the near future, but for now, we hope this video will give you a good sense of the Warzone experience in Star Wars: The Old Republic! Also, be sure to check the screenshot section to see how this battle is heating up.

Jedi Consular Advanced Class name:
Joanne Laroche
Earlier this year, we announced the Advanced Classes System which allows you to customize your character according to your play style. We also revealed the advanced classes for the Jedi Consular: Jedi Shadow and the Jedi Wizard. These advanced class names created a lot of activity in the forums! Now we would like to let the community help us finalize the Jedi Consular's advanced class names!

We're offering you the chance to rename the Jedi Wizard Advanced Class. Cast your votes now!

Check out the naming options above. There are four choices available. This poll will determine the final title that appears in game. We'll be tallying the results from the English, French, and German communities to determine the winner. Voting ends at 5:00PM CST on Thursday, December 2nd so vote now!

We look forward to hearing from you!

Glad they at least are starting to show PVP. Looks like a simple BG style system (Each goal zone has a team objective). Decent premise and good attempt to make it fit the atmosphere (rather than just having a capture the flag game).

However, I do hope this is not all they have for PvP.

Also, I disliked the video portrayal of the smuggler 'running up to melee' most of the time. It was very much a 'Braveheart Run' that I hate in ranged games. It implies that we are going to see a lot of the [run to point blank range + shooting each other in the face for 3 mins] type range combat. :-(

Maybe the smuggler wanted to get in a good ball kick?
  • #40 Loekii
That is the point. It should not be about what the smuggler 'wants' to do, but rather only what the smuggle 'can' do. If he wants to do a groin kick, he needs to be able to close the range without getting killed -- rather than the game allowing him to run up with impunity.

It is one of the aspects of STO ranged combat that I felt was a step in the correct direction -- running out in the open usually ended with you getting killed, instead of getting to WTFpwnz someone at melee.

reminds me a little of bf2142 titan-mode play...ah, brings back many pleasant memories with my bf clan, but wth with only 8v8? this should be much larger scale pvp. still looks fun even for instanced play.

is that a sith pureblood inquisitor at 1:22? thought pureblood was restricted to SW class...interesting.

Looked like a red Zabrak to me. You can see the horns poking through the hood.
  • #29 Elkesai
They haven't announced all the species for all the classes yet. I mean, look at the zabrak Jedi, not to mention the zabrak trooper we've seen in another vid, and apparently a player, not just a companion.

Anyway, I agree with you on the BF2142. That's what I thought when I first saw the controllable guns firing at the base ships.

kinda reminds me of Arathi Basin in WoW where you get control of the node and gain points, just that instead of gaining points the other team loses points (starship damage)

I do think it is a good attempt at keeping it in a SW theme. It is a good start, but I certainly hope this is not the 'best' they will have.

I would like to see some PVP Dungeons - Sith Vs. Rep, both find a stranded Ship, both have different objectives, both fighting NP Mobs, and first one to complete dungeon Objective wins (ie Start ship from engine room or control room).

  • #26 Jaramukhti
Only in this case, you can fire lasers and actually see them causing damage on the ships you are trying to destroy. The lead designer even confirmed in a Gamespot UK interview that the battle won't just end, you'll see a catastrophic explosion from a ship to indicate whether you are victorious or defeated.

Also, Simon Templeman (Kain from Legacy of Kain/Loghain from DA:O) will be guiding you, giving you directions on the field of battle, if you are an Imperial player (which I will be).

The only similarity I see, is that there is a node you must possess that affects the other force in some way. Otherwise, I don't really see the connection.

I can't watch the video at work, but this sounds alot like the Public Quests in Warhammer, which (when there were people around) were loads of fun!
  • #23 CornbreadChrist
Totally agree there. Public Quests were great if there was anyone else in the damn zone to do them with you.

Regarding this release though, I think it's more like the battlegrounds that the player could queue for from anywhere than a public quest.

While overall it looks really good, and I apprerciate the idea of doing something "real" and not just getting flags, it seems to strengthen my previous fears: the lightsaber animations are still not fluid and the saberstaff is just not in place, like the animators don't really know how it should be used (in one frame the jedi clearly takes a hit with the hilt). I'd expect a lot of circular, round moves but all just poking with a stick.
Since I still plan to start a jedi shadow (is the name still?) right now I hope I'll be able to function with the standard, single blade weapon.
Sorry for the negative post, I'm pretty much hyped up from the whole game, this just really bugs me... :(

totally agree, that moment when the Consular "blocked" the Sith's saber with her HILT really stood out to me and turned me off. But overall I am very pleased with this update. Better than the conventions, really.
