EA's Eric Brown at UBS Media and Communications Conference

Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown's presentation at the UBS 38th Annual Media and Communications Conference reaffirmed CY2011 for Star Wars: The Old Republic. It was also mentioned that SWTOR "...will generate revenue through monthly subscriptions" while speaking on the subscription model. Speaking on availability of options on purchasing, Eric Brown stated that the game's PC client will be available in both a retail packaged format and digital download format. Eric Brown also described The Old Republic as a ten year opportunity for EA.

Eric Brown's presentation lasted about 40 minutes and is now over. As of this moment this appears to be all of the new information relating to The Old Republic that came out of the presentation.

Awesome. I wish I could have listened live with you guys. Just got off work and hearing the news. Glad something came out of it and it wasn't a waste of time.

Well, we have the business model. Now we just need a release date. Hopefully we'll get that in the next month or two.

I'm predicting we will know the release date by February 1st. :o)

This prediction is hinging on the idea that it will still ship in spring.

I was thinking either at the VGAs this weekend, or during a Super Bowl commercial maybe? As you say, contingent on a Spring release.

I'm not sold on them doing at SB commercial at all. I know it has been thrown around on the official forums for quite sometime but SB commercials are so expensive, couple that with the fact that they have already put so much money into making the game. One 20 second ad during the SB for millions of dollars doesn't seem like a great return on their investment.

Instead they can advertise during South Park (seems only VG commercials are shown during that show) and Adult Swim. They can give them WAY less money and have the commercial reair over and over while actually hitting the gamer audience.

I know everyone watches the Super Bowl it seems and I don't have the stats to back this up but it doesn't seem like a smart investment overall. But I could be way off base with that. I'd have to do more research and be a lot smarter when it came to marketing and demographics to be able to give a real response.

I'm thinking mid to late January we are getting the date. I have my reasons for thinking this but I really can't elaborate.

Well, I know the EA Q3 Shareholders conference call will be in late Jan or early Feb. You thinking John Riccitello is going to have loose lips again this year?
  • #31 Zanthos
Feb 1st i think is when they are doing it. If you look back at their previous Quarter statements, they release the current quarter they are physically in at the time and what games are coming out, as well as the future quarter. So Q3 will have a list of games that will be out in Fiscal Q1 on it in the presentation. (April, May, June).

Also there is another tidbit of info I'm leaning on (which is what I cannot elaborate on). So both of those items together is where I'm formulating that opinion.

Also at the Q2 review, Riccitello told someone asking a question about 55 minutes into the webcast that they wouldn't be making an announcement via a conference call when it came to a release date. That it would be a consumer based announcement. So if TOR is listed in the Q1 release schedule in their Feb. 1 presentation that means that they would have already had to announced it before hand.

So yeah, that's basically where my theory is coming from.

But the "consumer announcement" comment made by Riccitello on the 2nd of November is starting to make me think twice. Perhaps the VGA's will have something.

Ya, I def think it will be at the end of May release as that is the end of Spring and is a historical Star Wars big release month.

Also, I really am glad to have a set monthly subscription model, makes things sooooo much easier. Hopefully they will have a online bill pay account to make it even easier! haha.

Glad to see the subscription model!

Some people don't like it, but I think it's the best because (1) it doesn't have the micro-transaction feel where you are nickeled and dimed for every little thing. Also, (2) its better than free to play because the developers use the money they make to invest more into the game and improve it. Lastly, (3) its actually pretty cheap than if you were to pay $5 to watch a movie for about a 2 hours of entertainment. For $15 (if that is going to be the price) you get countless hours for an entire month!

  • #19 darthuser593
If you live in Idaho, that is the basic price lol. I don't live there but my Friend says that going to the movies is soooo cheap.
