Friday Update: Cinematic Design

This week's update is a Developer Blog with Lead Cinematic Designer Paul Marino on the subject of Cinematic Design. In the Devloper Blog, Paul Marino explains how scenes are crafted in Star Wars: The Old Republic as well as gives insight on story aspects. New Screenshots and Videos help the Developer Blog convey what Paul Marino is speaking on. For those interested in the way scenes are crafted in The Old Republic, this is the update for you. DevTracker Post after the jump.

Lead Cinematic Designer Paul Marino paints a clear picture of how a scene is designed and directed.

A Cinematic Designer puts on their director's beret for each scene they work on. Is this a scene for the Jedi Consular? It will most likely be a quiet, emotionally-centered setting, focusing on the difficult choices ahead. Or perhaps it's a scene for a Bounty Hunter who confronts an obnoxious nobleman and has to choose the best way to extract the information he needs.

What's the difference between DH "leaking" stuff from the official stuff and what those other guys do? The Bioware guys have said in the past that you guys found stuff that wasn't meant to be announced yet so I can't really see the difference here.

    Few things:

    1. You should realize that they can tell exactly who that stuff comes from. One of the supposed penalties in the Game Testing Agreement is that they can effectively ban you from playing the game. So not only are we protecting ourselves, we're also protecting our sources and members of the community with this zero tolerance policy.

    2. DH policy is that we do not reveal if we are in game testing or not.

    3. Official assets are not subject to the restrictions of the game testing agreement. It is fun to speculate along with the community about the stuff we all find.

    4. We have no idea how old the builds we play are, or how old the assets are that they release. We can surmise from Gordon Walton's presentation at GDC SF that they are testing multiple clients across multiple testing groups, and we warn everyone constantly about that -- what we see isn't necessarily THE current build of the game. Therefore, we report on the changes and progress from build to build or asset to asset that isn't subject to restriction by the Game Testing Agreement.

I agree there is not much of a difference, other than how Bioware would react to DH doing such.

BW might respond to DH's coverage of such 'leaks', by not inviting the staff to press events, not granting interviews, etc.

Personally, I think such leaks are good opporturnites for BW to get some Feedback, without having to officially release information.

Do you know what the NDA actually is? It stands for non-disclosure agreement, and its legally binding. When these people who signed up for the beta got accepted it was done so on the basis that they respect the NDA and don't release any of the content that they were lucky enough to test to the public. And there "can" be harsh penalties for breaking it - (Indeed recently Ben Collins who was 'the Stig' on Top Gear broke his NDA when he announced he was going to reveal his identity for his autobiography, subsequently the BBC took him to court and he ended up losing his job). If EA could identify these people they probably would take legal action against them.

DarthHater in their insider previews and interviews etc, were evidently not subject to the NDA and their for were authorised to release that content on there website. BioWare wouln't invite DarthHater to these events if they suspected showed or even leaked content.

Analyzing frame by frame of officially released TOR videos is different from leaks from the game testing that BioWare themselves did not condone. The difference is DH dissects officially released videos, while the game leaks aren't from BioWare themselves. That's why they're only reported on fringe sites like the infamous one that had a thing today.

I support DH for being on the good side of BW
but I also support other sites for giving us great leaks
I respect both DH and BW by not talking about said leaks, however I sure the hell can look at leaks all I want

Yet you are still revealing information that Bioware doesn't want you to. They even admitted to screening things more closely now so they don't spoil as much as they did before.

Yes, they said that, and at the same time give Darth Hater insider interviews and hands-on sessions. If anything Darth Hater was doing was wrong or against the rules, BioWare wouldn't be playing nice with them.

That's besides the fact that breaking down official released content is different from posting screenshots and info from a beta that you signed an NDA for.

BioWare has said "nice catch, we didn't mean for you to see that in our official videos" in a wink wink nudge nudge kind of way. They know hiding something in the background of their videos just leaves more hype. They're official videos, do they want people to not look at their official videos? BioWare's been in the business a while, they know what to include or not include in their videos. They're official videos, so they're condoned. It's basically that simple. And to be blunt, most of DH's dissections just uncover little things like "this is the symbol for credits in your inventory", nothing groundbreaking like "a whole new player race" or "class talent trees". Nothing major like you see on leak-related sites that BioWare definitely didn't upload.

TL;DR = If it's on the official site or a fansite BW has themselves given interviews or playthrough demos to, it's allowed. Otherwise, nope.

The first video's url on the blog entry is the page's url plus #cedarik, the second's is the page's url plus #malfus. That a hint of anything? Maybe the name of the NPC being confronted in each video?
  • #44 chronium
Yeah it sounds like the names of the NPC's
  • #39 Frogsox
I think so. They don't sound like locations or plot points as much as they sound like names.

I don't know why people want to leak this stuff. You're just ruining the excitement of playing a brand new game when it's released. At best you get an idea of what the game is about and at worst you get the wrong impression from the beta etc and then you miss out on a great game. Don't mention any of that junk on here because I really don't want to hear about it.

l'll take this peek at the game and be happy about it. All BioWare needs to do for me is be true to their own schedule, regardless of what the real world calendar says. It seems like 2008 was just yesterday...Now the game is only months away. Hell, if cancelling Friday Updates from now on meant a better game at launch that'd be all good with me.
