This week's update is a Developer Blog with Lead Cinematic Designer Paul Marino on the subject of Cinematic Design. In the Devloper Blog, Paul Marino explains how scenes are crafted in Star Wars: The Old Republic as well as gives insight on story aspects. New Screenshots and Videos help the Developer Blog convey what Paul Marino is speaking on. For those interested in the way scenes are crafted in The Old Republic, this is the update for you. DevTracker Post after the jump.
Lead Cinematic Designer Paul Marino paints a clear picture of how a scene is designed and directed.
A Cinematic Designer puts on their director's beret for each scene they work on. Is this a scene for the Jedi Consular? It will most likely be a quiet, emotionally-centered setting, focusing on the difficult choices ahead. Or perhaps it's a scene for a Bounty Hunter who confronts an obnoxious nobleman and has to choose the best way to extract the information he needs.
Some of the character designs looked a bit funky in that video. I have liked 95% of what I've seen in game so far, but for some reason they chose their most outrageous designs for this one. Mako still has the new look which I dislike, but for the most part it was an enjoyable video and update. I think given that these characters shown (NPC) are relatively minor, from my impressions, so I imagine the VO will be even better on the more major scenes and characters. I mean, take Malgus for example, his is excellent. The bounty hunter was pretty cool too.
I found the videos on youtube & tried to blow up images I took of that BH armor from there, but still too far away for me to get any detail from it. Shame, cause it looks like it could be a decent looking set.
idon't think it's the only update for today as they didn't make a "happy new year thanks for the support " post , so there might be something left in store for us..Anywayz happy new yrar haters!
Do you mean revealing? Relieving implies something else. Anyway, to show off the cinematic scenes they had to wait for the graphics to be close to release quality otherwise it would have looked ugly. Therefore they could not have release it at the start of last year. Also I imagine they've been recording VO all year to get ready for this year's release date. It's not like a TV show where people stand on the same set and talk to each other, I imagine a lot of the scenes from the game are only just getting all the VO together now.
I'm sure a lot of it will be over the top. After all the characters are based on over the top people rather than everyday people, but more important, with so many characters, they have to be over the top that way they are memorable and noticeable. There are plenty examples of non-over the top characters in game, but I can't remember any...because they aren't memorable.
well I thought that the dialogue choice itself is supposed to display "dark side points" at the end. that's enough right there, don't need any distracting red screen glowing

Posted 12/31/2010 4:33:13 PMI would have rather seen something 'new' and relieving about the game.
And to be honest, the writing/acting seemed to lean a little 'over the top'.
