SWTOR Comic Previewed in Star Wars Insider

The upcoming issue of Star Wars Insider Magazine features a preview panel of a new Star Wars: The Old Republic comic titled The Old Republic: The Lost Suns to release in June:

The Old Republic: The Lost Suns. A five-issue series set during the timeframe of the highly-anticipated MMO The Old Republic, The Lost Suns is set approximately 3,600 years before the movies. It stars Republic spy Theron Shan, son of Jedi Master Satele Shan, and packs explosive revelations relating to the events of the game. For this tale the games senior writer Alexander Freed reunites with the Blood of the Empire creative team of Dave Ross (pencils), Mark McKenna (inks), Michael Atiyeh (colors), and Benjamin Carre (covers).

The magazine's cover also advertises original SWTOR fiction with an image of Darth Malgus, which may be the short story Deceived author Paul S. Kemp alluded to back in December. Star Wars Insider hits the newsstands on March 16.

Press Release

MARCH 9, 2011, Milwaukie, OR-Dark Horse Comics, in collaboration with LucasArts and BioWare, is proud to announce a new chapter in Star Wars: The Old Republic, the comic series that acts as an invaluable companion to the upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game of the same name. Featuring a story by BioWare's senior creative writer, Alexander Freed, that runs concurrent to the game's plot, The Lost Suns comes straight to you with new twists, a new mission, and a new hero!

"The Lost Suns is our chance to craft an Old Republic story we could never tell in a video game," Freed relayed. "For readers familiar with the setting, the comic starts when the game starts and showcases events and mysteries key to the battle between Republic and Empire. For readers who've never heard of the game, we want to recapture the Star Wars sense of adventure in a strange universe, where the stakes are impossibly high and treacherously personal."

Featuring art from George Freeman (IDW's Angel) and Dave Ross (Star Wars: The Old Republic-Blood of the Empire, Star Wars: Dark Times), with covers by Benjamin Carr (Star Wars: The Old Republic-Blood of the Empire), the five-issue miniseries focuses on a time of tense peace. Thousands of years before Darth Vader and the events of the Star Wars films, the Republic fears a second war with the Sith Empire, and only Theron Shan, son of legendary Jedi Master Satele Shan, will keep both sides at bay. He's a spy, not a Jedi, and his newest assignment will be a true test of his skills! Find out in The Lost Suns if Theron Shan can discover the dark secrets behind the treaty that brought peace to the galaxy as he searches for Jedi Master Ngani Zho-thought lost in Sith space-while dealing with a troublesome thief, as a crew of Sith Knights begin to tighten the noose in their pursuit of Zho! Providing key plot development for the soon-to-be-released online game Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Lost Suns from Dark Horse Comics premieres in June with an all-new story that helps unfold the actual events in the game! This unique tie-in series also marks the debut of the Sith Knights!

    Great news!

It would've been funny if Satele's son's name was Shawn/Sean Shan, since they rhyme. :)

I wonder why her son is a Republic spy, was he born a "muggle" so to speak?

Also, I like how Satele's son was foreshadowed long ago, with her bio's aurebesh mentioning "a secret son", even if having the same last name as his mom blows the secret. :P I wonder if the bit on "Jedi exiled her mother" from Satele's bio will also tie in to the comic. Maybe Theron working with his grandmother?

I completely forgot about the "secret son" bit from the aurabesh.

If nothing else, that alone makes me excited to read the comic.

20%, be that he is a Jedi Shadow, since the blood of Revan still flows through his veins.

The question that comes up, in my mind at least, is his age. Assuming he was born 0-1 ATC at the earliest, and speculation that the game is set around a decade after (10-11 ATC), he'd be pretty young and all that jazz. If the comic gives away a Bio for Theron, then we'll roughly know how imprecise our time measurements were with respect to when in the timeline the game started.

The only worry about this material being almost randomly pushed now is that it sorta signals to me that the release date is going to be pushed back so in the meantime BioWare and Lucas Arts are going to fill in the time gap by giving us "extra" lore material to keep us "busy". I am REALLY happy that we are finally getting SOMETHING more tangible than what we have been getting lately, but it just worries me that this means that instead of playing the game in a few months, we will be just reading about it. Don't get me wrong, I love the ToP and BotE, Fatal Alliance, and the soon to be released Deceived (I actually even purchased all the comics), I would much rather play the game and learn about these things in game as a suprise hahaha.

Take your time Bioware to make the greatest game ever that is polished for amazingness, we would probably all agree that, that factor is the number one priority over any idea of rushing a game for release... but just please be open with the community and let us know when we might expect a release, even if it is not the news we are excited to hear about or even if it is going to be on time. (a post from stephen reid doesn't count lol)

Other than that, I look forward to getting this comic when it comes out!

I think they will continue updates after the game has been released, which is confirmed somewhere on swtor. com.

This might be a sign that the game could be pushed back or it could also be a sign that they plan on making more comics for their game even after release.
  • #6 sgtsavage
Yes, of course they will have updates after the release and I am actually really looking forward for them to be expanding the lore in that time period as much as possible not only through the game, but especially books and comics. I really like it when the lore is expanded as I love how crisp the cannon for SW is for the most part. So the latter part of making more comics or other material for the game after the release is inevitable, I just hope that a delay in the game's release is not lol.
  • #12 Niobewun
I hate to say that was the first think that popped into my head when I read this... I hope its just continued updates, but I fear it confirms a push back.

But the longer they say nothing that also confirms the push back.

Nice. That reminds me. I need to go read the e-comics on the official site.
Which one do I read first Blood of the Empire of Threat of Peace?
  • #11 DH_Sghetti
Even though Threat of Peace was released first, it technically takes place about 20 years after Blood of the Empire. So if you want to read them chronologically, you'd want to start with BotE.
  • #3 Salsa30
Threat of Peace was the first of the two to be released. I wouldn't think reading them in whatever order you want would mess you up or spoil anything though.

    Thanks :)
