Bounty Hunter Video & Interview at IGN

Today IGN released an interview with Daniel Erickson, Lead Writer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Georg Zoeller, Principal Lead Combat Designer. The article also included the newest class video for the Bounty Hunter.

"The Bounty Hunter is his own man and always needs space to stretch out, so as much as possible missions take you into situations you won't see with other classes," Erickson said.

On the roles a Bounty Hunter can take, Zoeller commented:

The Bounty Hunter's role for the Empire is similar to that of the Trooper on the Republic side. One could say that they are arch enemies. Within the class, the roles are divided as follows : the Mercenary advanced class can take the role of ranged damage dealer or healer [and] the Powertech advanced class can take the role of close range damage dealer or tank. The skill trees for these advanced classes offer various ways of sub-specializing these roles (e.g. burst vs. sustained kind of damage dealing roles, etc.)

This pic of a Republic walker doesn't really show the first time seeing it in-game. http://darthhater.com/media/gallery/bounty-hunter-class-video-dissection/image/2219/

We saw it in-game in the Trooper video, and in a Quesh screenshot. http://www.swtor.com/media/screens/quesh
Still nice to see it again though. :)

It appears that the Death from Above ability allows the Bounty Hunter to hit targets behind cover - can anyone confirm if this is correct? From what has been revealed so far, do any of the Republic classes have known abilities that are allow them to attack enemies behind cover without having to reposition themselves?
  • #107 Jecalips
Any damaging ability can hit someone behind cover. What is confirmed are abilities that can remove someone from cover as well as talent/abilities that can keep a cover class from being removed from cover. Both may be temporary though?!?

Hey, in second 32 (which basically is the screenshot you show at the top) there is a beautiful sight of a thermal detonator stitched in the belt of the BH...

Image 5/15 BH forgets to disarm his prisoner!!!! :D :D :D...Is this the kind of BH the Empire hires???

Nice video. 'Bout time too, can't wait to see the Bounty Hunter ship details . . .

I would say I can't believe nobody noticed this, but even I just now became aware of it.

Look at the detail of the lightsaber blade. The effects on it are crazy compared to the way they were in older builds. See for yourselves:

BH video lightsaber blade - http://media.dhcdn.com/2011/03/2177/bhdiss11.jpg

Now compare them to the blades we've seen before in older builds:

I chose to use pics from the latest builds for this comparison. You can see in older builds the aura around the lightsabers was sort of translucent, which made the lightsabers look almost like multi-colored glowsticks. But now look at the picture from today's BH video and you'll see a difference between them.

At first I thought it was just the yellow of the saber being so bright, but look at the aura around the blade. It's thicker, murkier, and nowhere near as translucent. For instance, if you look at those lightsaber images above from previous builds, you can see the scenery behind the characters right through the auras, and even certain physical outlines of the character; you can't do that with the yellow saber's aura. In fact, you can't even see the outline of his shoulder through it (not even after I tweaked and inverted the colors in paintshop---the aura is THAT solid).

Dare I say it, that actually looked like a real lightsaber---at least in that shot.:)

I'll definitely be paying attention to the next screens they release to see if different colored sabers have the same stronger aura.

I'm hoping like lore and KOTOR lightabers will vary between blade length/translucence/focus when it is customized, helping make the lightsabers more unique. perhaps these screenshots simply show an alternate version of a modified lightsaber?

    SWTOR Character Names:

The Bastion:: Gurion (Lvl 50 LS Sith Juggernaught), Adomin (LVL 44 DS Sentinel), Achinoam (Lvl 11 Grey Consular), Tzahala (LVL 14 DS Trooper),Juliraus (LVL 9 Grey/Dark BH)

It could be any number of things, honestly. I mostly just posted these pics because I noticed a difference.

Actually, if you go by the order when these pics were officially released you can see the progression.

    #1.) http://media.dhcdn.com/2011/01/1149/ss_pureblood01_full.jpg

    #2.) http://media.dhcdn.com/2011/01/1116/ss4_1600x900.jpg

    #3.) http://media.dhcdn.com/2011/01/1145/ss_zabrak02_full.jpg

    #4.) http://media.dhcdn.com/2011/03/2177/bhdiss11.jpg

With each one, the aura appears to get stronger.

I honestly wasn't even paying attention to the blade the first few times I watched the video. Imagine my surprise when I ran the BH saber pic through paintshop and couldn't see jack through the aura.lol It was the first time that's happened since I've been following SWTOR.XD

But like I said, it could be any number of things. It could even be that the more dazzling sabers don't come into your possession until endgame or near there. Which, if you think about it, may actually be kind of cool. A lot of people have been wondering what would differentiate a lightsaber you get at the beginning of the game from one you get at the end since they are both essentially the same type of weapon. Maybe this is it (other than progressively more ornate hilts, I mean).

They should have made the bounty hunter and smuggler able to choose different factions. I can just as well see a smuggler working for the imperials as for the republic. It wouldn't have taken much story wise, just switch a few story elements around.
IT would make for more class variety in the game.
VO would be a b&$ch though...
  • #85 RogueJedi86
How many evil smugglers have you seen in SW? Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, Talon Karrde, Booster Terrick, the list of good smugglers goes on and on and on. I can't think of any smugglers who worked for the Empire in the movie/post-RotJ era.
  • #94 Vanlan
Not that I think those classes should be able to choose a faction, but you can play an evil smuggler, so that argument isn't very good.
  • #102 darthuser3777
Well for one thing, the word smuggling tends to imply you import things the government does not want you to. Now maybe you come in useful in dire times, but more often than not you're going to be at odds with the republic.

Hand Solo started out neutral at best. I don't know too much Lando-lore but i only ever saw him as a crook politician who betrayed his mate. that's hardly a good picture. Don't know anything about the other two or any other smugglers from the books or comics (my knowledge ends with kotor and the movies). But just because Lucas Arts has portrayed more 'good' smugglers than bad ones, doesn't mean the bad ones are equally as likely to pop up.

But that's all beside the point. i'm just saying it would be a good idea. as far as i know, it hasn't been implemented. i i can't ever see it being implemented anyway. its just an idea.

The morality system allows you to play a smuggler as "good" or "bad", so "bad" smugglers will exist in TOR. Most smugglers have an honorable streak, which deviates them towards the good guys. An article on the official site a couple years ago said the Empire doesn't tolerate smugglers, just like the Republic doesn't tolerate hitmen assassins like bounty hunters.

It's not LucasArts that portrays smugglers, it's all of the Lucas stuff, that falls under the big blanket of LucasFilm. LucasArts just covers the games. :) In light of all of the SW stuff portraying good smugglers, that's how smugglers are in SW. I know a few things about the EU, and there aren't many, if any, evil smugglers, not in the history of SW from the foundation of the Republic at 25,000BBY onward to KotOR/TOR 3800-3500BBY, or in the movie era around 32BBY-4ABY, or in the Legacy comics 140ABY, the farthest the timeline has gone.
