Bounty Hunter Video & Interview at IGN

Today IGN released an interview with Daniel Erickson, Lead Writer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Georg Zoeller, Principal Lead Combat Designer. The article also included the newest class video for the Bounty Hunter.

"The Bounty Hunter is his own man and always needs space to stretch out, so as much as possible missions take you into situations you won't see with other classes," Erickson said.

On the roles a Bounty Hunter can take, Zoeller commented:

The Bounty Hunter's role for the Empire is similar to that of the Trooper on the Republic side. One could say that they are arch enemies. Within the class, the roles are divided as follows : the Mercenary advanced class can take the role of ranged damage dealer or healer [and] the Powertech advanced class can take the role of close range damage dealer or tank. The skill trees for these advanced classes offer various ways of sub-specializing these roles (e.g. burst vs. sustained kind of damage dealing roles, etc.)

I was worried we'd be limited to blue/green/red sabers after GL's decree a few years back of only allowing those colors with Mace's purple being the exception.

I could swear that Sith woman is a Rattataki. The skin color is exactly like what we've seen of the race, not to mention the eye markings.

Also, I'm starting to wonder if we won't see our guild insignias on our shoulders or armor, as opposed to on tabards and such. Skadge and the guys in this video who are connected to the Black Sun all have their insignias on their shoulders, plus I think the Trooper has the Havok Squad logo on their armor, as well.

It seems like the animation for drawing your lightsaber has been highly improved. Judging by this video.

Erickson: The Bounty Hunter has a very diverse group of companions. Not being part of any organized group, the Bounty Hunter picks people up along the way in all sorts of odd circumstances. Former targets, rivals and what is possibly the CUTEST COMPANION CHARACTER IN BIOWARE HISTORY all show up to make an appearance. And no, I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT MAKO.

I guess that is the main reason why BH companions have'nt been officially introduced yet ;)

    this was simply awesome! :)

"Within the class, the roles are divided as follows : the Mercenary advanced class can take the role of ranged damage dealer or healer "

This is dumb. For the record. I know it is because of armor classification but it is still dumb. The one Powertech skill set could be a mid-ranged Paladin type with medium armor.

What exactly are you trying to get at emlaeh? the "I know it is because of armor classification" kinda confused me in the sentence on what is dumb haha.

Like I think I know what you mean, but am not 100% sure lol.

Armor proficiency is one of the characteristics that defines the Advanced Class, and it shoudn't do that in the case of the Bounty Hunter.

Do I need to make a chart?

do you mean the description from the official side?

"Preparation is the Bounty Hunters best defense, and cutting-edge protective gear is standard equipment for most Bounty Hunters. Artisans spend months and even years hand-crafting the Bounty Hunters heavy armor to ensure it offers superior resistance to all manner of weaponry, and that each suit will still allow maximum flexibility and versatility. Offense is just as critical as defense, however, and powerful weaponry is necessary for any Bounty Hunter who might have to shoot his way out of a messy situation. Its not unheard of for a Bounty Hunter to spend as many credits on an advanced blaster as others might spend to purchase an entire starship."

All of that is going to change with the HoloNet update, but not talking about that... just standard class balance stuff.

I would think more people would want to blow stuff up with their Mercs than put bandaids on booboos.

A chart with pictures and lots of colors would be amazing =)

Your sentence was confusing, but it was what i thought you meant, I was just wondering if you meant something else.

I could see a BH possibly grabbing a healing power once they figure out their ranged combat chain. It would depend on if the healing powers generated a discernible amount of heat or not. Also it would depend on how the abilities are level-gated. It could very well be that of the powers available at X level, the heal is the preferred choice because the uber-"Blow people up" power doesn't come in until X+2 levels later.

If would give them something to do between cooldowns of the attack chain and the "Vent heat" power. A BH might take a heal just so they can make sure their companion stays alive if nothing else. At least the companion characters make "Ally other" powers less of a waste of time for people who solo 90% of the time.

Will we see a "dedicated-Healer spec", where the BH spends most of their time healing? I doubt it or at least I doubt it will be necessary.

Looks like he's becoming the palading. tanking, healing, dps
  • #42 Raithnor
So I take it the ability to wear heavy armor and healing are mutually exclusive?
  • #58 Chrohno
I think the idea behind the divide is so that you don't end up with 1 AC having tank/dps/healing roles, while the other AC only has DPS as a role.

But I agree, we now have 3 light/medium armored/ ranged/healers on each faction, seems kind of redundant.
