Bounty Hunter Video & Interview at IGN

Today IGN released an interview with Daniel Erickson, Lead Writer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Georg Zoeller, Principal Lead Combat Designer. The article also included the newest class video for the Bounty Hunter.

"The Bounty Hunter is his own man and always needs space to stretch out, so as much as possible missions take you into situations you won't see with other classes," Erickson said.

On the roles a Bounty Hunter can take, Zoeller commented:

The Bounty Hunter's role for the Empire is similar to that of the Trooper on the Republic side. One could say that they are arch enemies. Within the class, the roles are divided as follows : the Mercenary advanced class can take the role of ranged damage dealer or healer [and] the Powertech advanced class can take the role of close range damage dealer or tank. The skill trees for these advanced classes offer various ways of sub-specializing these roles (e.g. burst vs. sustained kind of damage dealing roles, etc.)

Heaven forbid we have pure DPS classes... I know I'm being harsh and I haven't experienced it first hand so I may be saying this needlessly, but they could just you know... put all the support roles into a support AC and give them the shared skill set to dps in.

And also not put the healing stat on heavy armor instead of turning everything into hybrid support classes.

I agree that there should still be pure DPS classes, but I enjoyed the Disciples of Khaine class in Warhammer that is a hybrid that heals based on the damage output done. So hopefully some of these healing classes they are adding in can do this to help offset the low number of players that actually want to be dedicated healers.

it makes sense from a story point for them to fill all roles though. ok the medic thing in a raid may seem silly. but the BH is a tough bastard who's left to his own devices (well until the companions come in). When a lone BH takes down a target he/she must tank&spank the target and later nurse his/her wounds.

Yeah, so the point I was trying to make... do that in the other classes that already heal. Make healing more combat viable and less whack-a-mole. Then they'll solve their "we don't have enough people rolling healers" problem.

Again, it isn't so much the healing for the BH I have an issue with... it is that they put it in the Merc AC instead of the Powertech AC.

I'm sure every BH/Trooper wears heavy armor, so I don't think that's the case. I read the HoloNet as Powertechs wearing even heavier armor than what you start with, not Mercs wearing medium armor that is lighter than the starting gear.

They just made it so Powertech = close range beast (Flamer DPS or tanking) and Mercenary = long range cannon (Missile DPS or healing). One is more brawler/bruiser like Jango/Boba Fett and one is more assassin/support like Dengar/IG-88/Bossk (MERC).

I'm glad for a short-ranged DPS spec in the tank AC and couldn't have it any other way. BHs are constantly in melee range of Jedi in the movies and the EU and taking that away from them would be fantasy-shattering.

You really should mention in the dissection the never before seen yellow lightsaber (in SWTOR at least) on that Cathar Jedi.

Yellow lightsabers have been seen before. I believe in the Warzone video, I'll have to look it up again.

Anyone think is weird that a ranged class want to pull a target to himself? As a SW I would think the BH would be trying to kite me, not bring myself and my lightsaber closer. Is this just an anti-escape tool when someone tries to run from you?

It's hard to say if that particular Bounty Hunter was specced as a Mercenary or Powertech at that moment. In the IGN interview they mentioned the Powertech is the Flamethrower-centric/Tank AC and the Mercenary is the the Wrist Rocket/Ranged/Healer AC.

I could see a Powertech wanting to bring a target into close combat to unload a face full of Napalm. Another reason could be as crowd control in a mission where the NPC can flee and you could actually "fail" the quest. (Although I bet Bioware could plan for the NPC being captured or escaping in the overall storyarc.)

That being said it's sounds like the base class will give you access to both, how you specialize will depend on your playstyle.

The Powertech is more like an Operative/Scoundrel in his close-range expertise. Think Jango Fett vs Obi-wan or Boba Fett vs Luke (or vs Vader in the EU). Even though these three ACs are ranged combatants, they get huge benefits from being in melee/close range. The Powertech has extra heavy armor and shielding to endure a beating by melee combatants whereas the Operative/Scoundrel jump targets from melee stealth attacks.

I very much expect to pull Jedi towards me (or Rocket Punch myself into them) as a Powertech as most of my flamer DPS will only work within a 15 yard range. We know burning is one of the conditions required to unleash a Rail Shot, so even ranged abilities suffer without being able to flame your targets to a crisp as a PT.

Nice catch with the displays and the holograms. They do look awesome.

At 1:21 the BH shoots at republic troops which cover behind the old model for the IA mobile shield cover generator
  • #33 sado
You're right about the cover but unfortunately that was seen in past videos. =\

Love the way the holos look now.
  • #38 darthuser3060
with the flickering and everything yeah.

just wanted to point out that the trailer obviously has sources from different builds. the smoke and the holograms are from a newer one than the shields.
