Friday Update: New Trailer

Live from PAX East 2011, BioWare announces this week's Friday Update - New In-game Trailer. The Trailer recaps the high level story -- Peace in the Republic, Empire Returned, War, all set to clips of in-game footage. We're bringing this content live so watch this post for the Friday Update news.

UPDATE 11a PT: We had a chance to chat with Stephen Reid and we will have the full interview up relatively soon, but we wanted to let you know about something you will see tomorrow:

Stephen Reid

We're having a Saturday update; we got something going up tomorrow. I'm not going to spoil it but it is related to Taral V. I think people are going to like it; you're not going to have to work too hard to figure it out but it is something people have been asking for consistently for quite a long time.

No, it isn't a release date. But yeah, we're having an update tomorrow.

Working Dissection of the trailer is in the Media Gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not comment on stuff seen in prior videos. Make sure to keep checking out throughout the weekend for more content for the Dissection as we will add new content as we go. Official DevTracker post follows after the jump.

We are pleased to present Fate of the Galaxy, a brand new trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic fresh from PAX East 2011.

Tension between the Republic and the Empire is running high. The uneasy truce established by the Treaty of Coruscant is quickly tearing apart at the seams, and a return to all-out war has begun in all but official terms. A new generation of heroes, both light and dark, emerges to face the difficulties of these chaotic times, and fight for the fate of the galaxy in this most desperate age.

This trailer, created using in-game footage, is the first update you'll see from PAX East this year. Even if you can't join us on the show floor, please check back here tomorrow for more updates. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook to get more live updates from the show floor!

We hope that you enjoy Fate of the Galaxy now!

Actually, it looks more like three. Check out the jawa at the right edge of the screen.

Either way, I wasn't aware it was an aoe type of an attack.

I'm looking forward to PvPing against multiple enemies in an area with high cliffs.

The guys at ToR-Talk are saying Stephen said earlier that they are still aiming for Spring. Any confirmation on this?

A couple of weeks ago, I would have said that is a pipe dream.

Now... I think all bets are off.

This game might not launch in Spring. There is still a possibility that launch will get pushed back to Summer, or early fall. That said, I don't care who you are---NOBODY creates a system to allow guild registry, with a goal to allow them to move entire groups to specific servers, for a game that is half a year away.

BioWare may be saying 2011 (which is the smart thing to do to avoid being rushed by the population), but I bet they are going balls to the wall to try and get this game in a state where they feel it is as good as it can be by the Spring launch window.

No matter when it releases, videos like this make me feel confident that this game is going to be what I hoped it would be when it launches. The environments showcased here are beyond sick.

I agree with your POV here... the guild registry seems like a huge indicator to me. Not to mention all the things the devs are saying, i.e. referring to their current testing phase as "large scale" and mentioning that environmental effects are a late-stage polish yet in the same breath that we'd see it at PAX-East (hello, crazy Hoth snowstorm in the video today!). I'm sure there are more examples of how they're talking, I'm just going off the top of my head here.

And keep in mind that the "spring" launch window everyone references does represent EA's Fiscal '12 Spring Quarter, which is April/May/June. So "spring" and "summer" become kind of ambiguous terms without that delineation.

I enjoyed the Jawa Punting so much i decided to make a video dedicated to it:

Looking good but I've got a couple of things to point out.

Shadows on static objects look a bit suspect and pixelly. (see the crate in the foreground of pic 2 as just one example of a few)

Certain areas look far more polished than others. Tattooine looks a little neglected in terms of Gfx polish compared to Tython or Coruscant.

Also anyone else concerned that Space combat looks the most graphically impressive? Considering people will be spending very little time in space combat I found this worrying.

Plus with no date of release announced May 4th and May 25th are likely out of the picture for release dates :(

Also since when did ships warp in Star wars? surely picture 13 of the dissection should say new Hyperjump or hyperspace effect.
  • #109 r2d2arm
Yea, warp is for Star Trek :P
  • #110 Neko399
    I agree.

Should say HYPERSPACE JUMP or something.
  • #116 Jaramukhti
Well I wasn't going to get pissy about it or anything, but yeah, hyperspace jump sounds much more Star Wars than warp.
  • #114 sado
    Engage.

    Update: Fixed.

I think the important thing to notice is that they are polishing things up, which means they'll likely get around to Tattooine as well.

It's really easy to make Space Combat look impressive if you're using a Star Fox Tunnel shooter design since you can control the camera movement. If you've ever watched the behind the scenes of making God of War 3, they talk about how not giving the user the control of the camera allows them to make everything more cinematic and visually impressive. Even more so in a tunnel shooter since they have complete control of timing as well.

Also, I believe the proper term for the visual effect of a hyperspace Jump is a pseudomotion effect. (Invented by Timothy Zahn)

    Much appreciated :D.

Using Star Trek terms around Star Wars fans can be dangerous ;).

Nice iconic image in screenshot #2 :)
R2-D2 next to C-3PO in possession of the Jawa's.
(I know it's not those specific droids, but the image is a clear nod to ep. IV)

Is it just pretty me, or did anybody else notice the sound effects of the troopers bullet spray has improved/changed at 1:29/1:30 ? It sounds different. It sounds right!
