PAX East: Space Combat Demonstration

The team at BioWare just showed off seven minutes of Space Combat via their demonstration stage at PAX. While on stage, Daniel Erickson revealed information on how you can upgrade your ship, general space combat mechanics, how to use the Star Map to reach your destination, and more. Check the video embed below for the demonstration in its entirety.

Working Dissection of the demonstration is in the Media Gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not comment on stuff seen in prior videos. Make sure to keep checking out throughout the weekend for more content for the Dissection as we will add new content as we go.

My dream of having planet control seems more and more possible with the word "Contested"

I cant wait for the PvP updates coming soon.

This looks fun. Gonna laugh at all the people with a stick up their butts who will refuse to do Space Combat Missions because they're not free flight space simulators. Their choice, their loss.

It looks fun and I will try it, but I'm not impressed with it. It doesn't add anything new, reminds me of x-wing vs tie fighter and star wars battlefront II. Honestly swg space combat was a lot better, you can't even see yourself coming out of hyperspace. This is a step back that is going to bite them in the butt in the long run if they don't improve it.

I will try it, but I'm not impressed. Bioware could have done better.

I think Bioware had the right mindset for this... capturing moments from Star Wars movies.

However, I loved Star Trek Online's space pvp, and I remember playing it in Beta and hoping SWTOR used the same concept, for it was a HUGE relief from standard MMO's.

Regardless, DE made it sound like these space battles are like mini games that still give exp and loot, and that we are in no way forced to do them if we so wish (Which I think is stupid, since it should be pushed to some extent so players do not just dismiss it).

Bioware is already making a massive game, why add to the stress by trying to make a massive space game along with and possibly ruining both in the process?

By doing this, it allows them to focus on the main game, give us a little taste of space combat and then they can perfect it in a expansion.

I, for one, am looking forward to the space combat.

Huh how does it look like x-wing vs tie fighter and battlfront 2 when that's the same combat as JTL?

The reason why they are not making it open space combat is because it would only add to the already enormous list of things already in the normal game. But at least they have the mind set to make something for space combat. Plus i would rather have this in an MMO because they can create epic battle scenes while showing them to the player in different perspectives.

Is it just me or did it almost look like he was flying where he wanted? Obviously he wasn't, otherwise the ship would have remained in the middle of the screen, but it was teasing me the first time through.

That's what moving around the screen do. It helps the illusion that you are flying but you really aren't.

I think a rail shooter can be much funner than an instanced area or something like that. A rail shooter allows them to create awesome set pieces for us to experience and we would never be bored while doing it. We cant expect something like this to be perfect or take the place of the rest of the game, its meant to assist and make the experience that much more fun.

Although I really dig this video on Space Combat and am more excited about its potential, I still find myself questioning why BioWare focused on THIS aspect of gameplay, rather than showing us something along the lines of PVP or the MMO aspects of the game in general. My hope is that we still have tomorrow and kinda Sunday for reveals on the other MMO aspects of the game (especially end game / pvp / raiding), but I knew if they showed footage for Space Combat, it would be kinda opening pandoras box between the 3D shooter sims crowd vs. the "Tunnel Shooter" mini game game crowd. Instead of having a real substantive debate or new topic to talk about, we are all confined to just rehashing the old stuff/arguements. I am not going to lie, but the last thing I wanted them to touch on at PAX East was Space Combat and unless something comes out tomorrow, it sorta points out to me that there is now a risk that the game might need to be needing more developement, translating to a push back in the release date.

Well, I guess I am excited for tomorrow to see what BioWare intends to show us and I am craving for something new! Thanks for giving us a better picture of Space Combat... but really... lets get to the elephant in the room subjects, especially if the game is to be released in about 2 months.

Team Darth Hater, as always, you guys (and gal) ROCK! Keep up the great work and thank you for taking the time to get all this information out to the community.

It's most likely going to be Bioware's version of the Taral V walkthrough video.

I think the comments on the video's youtube page, and some on here, tell pretty much the whole story: some people wanted freedom of movement in their space experience, and no amount of polish is going to change this "tunnel shooter" into the game they were hoping to see. I'm not sure I buy that freedom of movement would win the vast majority of detractors over (it might assuage some of the pain until the next demand, but that's about it), however, let's think about this for a minute.

If you can fly about a small instanced area, but there was nothing really out there interesting to do but fly, what is the point? I realize that some people love to just go into space and coast---but is that really a good enough reason to spend valuable development dollars on it? I don't see how it could be, because while some people don't like THIS system, not everyone dislikes it for the same reason. Some people just want freedom of movement---but other people want a full space sim with all the trimmings.

One of the devs posted something in the tracker about how an idea can sound awesome in a person's head, and they can be easily convinced that it wouldn't take too much money to truly implement, but that the person with the idea doesn't always think about the vast majority of players---only those that fit into their group of dissidents. Also, you have to take into consideration the time it would take to test it, and find a way to mix it into your main game philosophy (which is why BioWare chose the tunnel shooter for this in the first place, because it meshed best with their philosophy for the main game).

I think the only real resolution anyone is going to get out of this will be if we just accept that some people are not going to like it, and probably never will (though some just might when they get their hands on it). For some people, the lack of movement freedom is what they don't like. For others, they loved one game or another game, and SWTOR's space combat is nothing like what they loved. For some people, they were hoping for a space experience that would allow them to be in the Star Wars universe, but not have to go on the ground if they didn't want to (this is not true of all the opponents of this system, but there are some with just this hope in mind). Whatever their reasons, they dislike it, and that may never change.

The thing is, BioWare made the choice to go with this system for a reason. Just like some of us have had to grit our teeth and bear some burdens to play a game in the past, this just might be the burden some people who loved free roaming space will have to carry. Space in The Old Republic is meant only to be a minigame. Something to do when you have a spare moment, or to make a quest a bit more interactive. More importantly, it is supposed to be something you go in, do, and get the hell out of so you can go play the REAL game. THAT'S why they chose the tunnel shooter---because a free roam doesn't get you to the action, get you going, and then get you back to the real game as quickly as possible.

It fits BioWare's game; sadly, it's not going to suit everyone's tastes.

To those who didn't get what you wanted in space combat: cross your fingers and hope for something in the xpacs.

Just look on the bright side---at least this is only a minigame.
