PAX East: Space Combat Demonstration

The team at BioWare just showed off seven minutes of Space Combat via their demonstration stage at PAX. While on stage, Daniel Erickson revealed information on how you can upgrade your ship, general space combat mechanics, how to use the Star Map to reach your destination, and more. Check the video embed below for the demonstration in its entirety.

Working Dissection of the demonstration is in the Media Gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not comment on stuff seen in prior videos. Make sure to keep checking out throughout the weekend for more content for the Dissection as we will add new content as we go.

I'm massively disappointed with the mechanics. I really honestly felt that JTL was one of the few things SWO did right. I think I would of appreciated the mechanics of STO over a tunnel "thing to do when you're bored" side game. Still though it does look like it has some nice polish on it and I'm sure it'll still be fun. I'm just with the people who really enjoy full 3d mechanics with some sort of actual play control over the ship.

I seem to belong to the minority here, and it could be that I'm just not in a very cheery mood right now... but I am not impressed by this at all. Not my type of gameplay. Simply doesn't look any engaging, cinematic (you don't even know where you're going, you're just following the "tunnel") or interesting at all. I don't think I'll be doing the space missions at all, based on this footage. That's too bad, I love flying around in space.

I have to agree with you. I'm not looking for the "sandbox" space exploration game. I love the idea of being instantly transported to a battle, but not having the option to choose how you attack scenarios and objectives and be creative, which is kinda one of the more important parts of mmorpg's: choice/options. I love the idea of space combat, but this doesn't excite me at all. And yes, I realize it's not the main focus of the game, and that's good because I will probably avoid this minigame as much as possible... :(

I think anyone will have a hard time arguing otherwise. It's basically hold fire button down, move mouse around to dodge stuff, the end.

I agree about the mechanics. I don't think anyone has really improved on Battlefront 2's space combat - and that game is getting pretty old.
    I'm still pretty happy though:
    - The Mass Effect-style galaxy map looks awesome.
    - "Contested Space" has me all excited for some reason.
    - When you're chatting it up on vent or just waiting for your guild to come online, this is infinitely preferable to jumping on a mailbox in Orgrimmar...

    "Contested Space"

I would imagine that it means planets and areas that both factions may venture into -- as opposed to one faction being gated like Corsucant?

I agree. I don't think there is any reason for further speculation since they already said Space Combat would not have PvP at release.
  • #52 Vanlan
Not on release, but they said they would add it so it may be a place holder since they know it's coming.
  • #54 chronium
They said they might add it not that they will.
  • #59 Vanlan
In the PC Gamer article they said:

"BioWare will implement PvP and Co-op in the future."
  • #62 chronium
and from the devs themselves after the article was published they use might.

There is not now or has there ever been any plan to implement pvp in space. One of the beefs I had with the people here from DH is that for a very long time they kept on refering to that PC Gamer article even after it was officially confirmed form the Doctors themselves at an interview at last years gamescon that there will be no space pvp in this game. The only info in that PC Gamer article that had any merit was the quote take straight from the BW devs about the description of the combat itself. All that mutliplayer and pvp nonsense was pure speculation and not based in any way on what was told to them by anyone at BioWare.

When posed with the question as to PvP in space Greg Zeschuk clearly stated that BioWare has no plans to implement pvp in space. I would just like to clear that up and would love for DH to do the same so people stop quoting that stupid magazine.

The disection mentions credits to play space battles for fuel costs. It seems like that would be for any travel not just space battle costs. I just get the mental image of some broke guy begging credits to pay the fuel costs to get to his raid that starts in 5 min. :-)

That sounds like an interesting idea. Although i don't see why you couldn't just pay with the credits you got on land though.
