PAX East: Space Combat Demonstration

The team at BioWare just showed off seven minutes of Space Combat via their demonstration stage at PAX. While on stage, Daniel Erickson revealed information on how you can upgrade your ship, general space combat mechanics, how to use the Star Map to reach your destination, and more. Check the video embed below for the demonstration in its entirety.

Working Dissection of the demonstration is in the Media Gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not comment on stuff seen in prior videos. Make sure to keep checking out throughout the weekend for more content for the Dissection as we will add new content as we go.

yes, rail shooters are really restrictive design in what you can do with it. They were around since the 80s so around 10+ years to implement branching paths does not speak well for rail shooters evolution.

Really? Try to learn some video game history? I love video games and their history, but even I would never demand someone to learn it. There is much more important history out there...I think. I've never really learned it.

And I agree with you Jara, I would say now-a-days I would differentiate between games similar to the lightgun games and games like this space combat, though I wouldn't get mad at anyone for saying its on rails.

    What I meant :)

Upon further inspection (Had to crank it up to 1080p) a lvl 20 Smuggler, whether just for demo purposes or not, cannot reach Hutta as a destination via the Galaxy map. Interesting stuff indeed.

Also noticed a "T------ Outpost" and "The Telos" as options on the map, but the "space game" as DE calls it, was not listed on the galaxy map. These may be instances/ Space Warzones. Interesting, interesting indeed.

As I suspect, starter worlds in addition to capital worlds will be off limits. You can see from the map that Dromund Kaas, the empire capital, is also not listed on the smuggler's map.

Lol, you guys (and girls) at DH really brought your A-game today, huh?

I am liking what i saw there. I was not high on space combat but now that I see it I am thinking I might like it

It has possibilities, since it wasn't ever intended to be the main form of game play for TOR. Will have to get my hands on it to see how much I'll play it, or exactly what I think of it though. It has possibilities though, for what it's intended to be.

I love they way they've done the galaxy map, especially dividing it up into sectors. Space combat looks decently challenging and insanely fun. Most importantly, even though it's a "tunnel shooter", you don't appear to be restricted at all. I don't think the naysayers will have much to complain about after this.
  • #30 chronium
what do you mean not restricted all you can do is move your ship around the screen.

Basically, I'm comparing it to the only other tunnel-shooter I think of that applies: Star Fox 64. Even though you're in a "tunnel" that directs where you go, the tunnel seems to be a lot larger, giving you a lot of freedom to move around inside that path. Star Fox, as awesome as it was, was pretty restrictive in that area, relatively speaking.
  • #61 chronium
That more has to do with the screen size then it does with the actual size of the tunnel. If you played star fox on a 50" tv it would look the same, except more blocky do to the small resolution star fox can be outputted on.

LOL, man you need to go back and play Star Fox because it's obvious you don't remember that game at all. It's the same exact thing. It's just as restrictive and babbling about people not having much to complain about makes so little sense it makes me dizzy. It's just as restrictive as it was on day one. Nothing in this video shows anything different than we saw in the first space trailer, except not the HUD is visible, but the voices aren't there. If you like tunnel shooters that's fine, but for the rest of us that don't like this, nothing in this video will change that. It's the same exact thing you get from Clone Wars Adventures, but with better graphics.

I'm glad it's not full 3d space combat. It would take away from the main game. Anyone who acutally wants that should go play eve online.
