Third TOR Novel Due in October

According to the Random House 2011 Fall Catalog, Drew Karpyshyn is penning the third The Old Republic Novel. The book currently falls under the name TOR #3. Title reveal occurs on April 15 and the cover reveal will happen in July at Comic Con in San Diego. The catalog lists the release date as October 18, 2011 and 352 pages in length in hardcover format.

This seems to be the secret project that Drew Karpyshyn was referring to on his personal website when he stated, "Its done! The secret book project Ive been working on (and that I still cant really talk about) is finished! Well, the first draft is finished. But its a long and winding road to the bookshelves"

Update: Drew Karpyshyn confirmed that he is indeed writing the novel and also confirmed the release date as October 15th in his latest blog post.

There is something I can confirm about the book, however. As was hinted at earlier, the novel is a tie-in with the SW:TOR game. And, on April 15 we will be officially announcing the title once that happens, Ill be able to talk a bit more about this project.

But wait, theres more! The release date has been announced as October 15 (though that might shift slightly), and at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July were going to preview the cover and release an excerpt of the novel.

How come with this information, yet again, I sense now the game will have a fall release (with the reveal of the big release date at this summers E3, which will also include the open beta) and especially since BioWare has changed their language from Spring 2011 to "It will be released in 2011".

Excited as hell for this Novel as I have had Deceived on pre-order for a long time now, that is def the upside haha! I LOVED the Bane trilogy, got me excited to play Empire sided in TOR.

"with the reveal of the big release date at this summers E3, which will also include the open beta"

ahnn, where did u heard this?

They are not going to announce a release date at a convention.

You will not find out about it from the press in some article. Or from a fan site.

You will hear it directly from BioWare.

I don't agree with that at all. It is called maximum exposure and BioWare thrives for it. If they are on track for their internal release date come E3 I would not put it past them to use that exposure to announce a release date. If it is not on track, then I do not expect one. However, I would not put it past them to announce the lifting of the NDA and start more broader testing at that point.

    That is fine to disagree.

The players and followers of this game deserve to know the release date before anyone else.

They could just turn the website into one html file with the date. Close everything else out, and they would get maximum exposure. Or they'll hide it at the end of some marketing video after the end credit logo. Something creative like that for the actual players of the game -- not the fickle press.

em, if thats the case, they better let me know their number so I don't accidentally hit ignore on my phone when they call me about the big release! haha jk.

I would agree that you would hear it from them, but that doesn't mean they won't do a "release" on the site and worldwide directly from them on the Friday before E3 ;)
(or a date extremely close to E3, hypothetically speaking if the release date is even possibly moved a bit, might as well go big or go home)

This is what I've been trying to tell people! Everyone says "no PAX announcement, must not be 'til E3!" and "they're not saying 'Spring' anymore, so it can't be Spring anymore"...

They will announce the release date as soon as they have it nailed down, and Fiscal Spring (April-June) is still 100% on the table.

Now just out of curiosity, is what you're saying just based off of sound logic, or have you heard similar out of someone with BW?

Edit: That last question was directed at em's "you will hear it directly from BioWare"... sorry, I should have quoted him for clarity ;)

BioWare is playing it smart, as they always do. I have been theorizing this a while now, since they have yet to release any gameplay information about the elephant in the room subjects (lots of them to list lol). Most importantly, from what we noticed this weekend, is that they have literally changed their verbage from "Spring 2011" to "in 2011" which is by far the best thing to do if the release date even looks iffy and we know how BioWare likes to play it safe

Plus I was throwing out a random scenario... my hopes are still for May haha if not I lose a bet with friends =p

Think the release date plays heavily in to when GW2 will be released. Those two seem to be the most anticipated MMO's coming this year. But that's just my assumption. :P

    But what about that quote:
EA CEO John Riccitiello stated last year, "Any announcement about TOR's release date would be a very public announcement

And.. If spring would be still the target, why dont they say spring anymore but 2011 in general?

Guild Wars 2 is looking more like 2012
  • #26 darthuser593
    just a guess =)

What else would people want to see/hear at E3... you get to play the game!

As Shriven said, Guild Wars 2 is looking to be a 2012 release. What I would be more concerned about with a release date is doing anything around BlizzCon as rumors are running rampant about Blizzards new "Titan" MMO getting officially announced.

This makes me sooo happy! The Bane trilogy was *awesome* and I've been hoping for another star wars themed novel from him since. Wish he would grace us with an appearance at one of the official events, like pax prime or something.

I also enjoyed the Bane trilogy. Looking forward to the books
