Friday Update: Fan Friday and Studio Insider

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is a Fan Friday. The usual new set of forum avatars, fan art, concept art, polls, and a Studio Insider with World Designer Jesse Sky on Cinematic Animation are contained in it. As always, you can find our media gallery of the concept art below and the Official DevTracker post after the jump.

This month BioWare is also looking for Community Questions on Classes for their Community Q&A. If you think you have what it takes to pose a question to the BioWare staff on classes, hit the jump for the guidelines from the Official DevTracker post.
DevTracker Posts

The Old Republic community has a lot of questions, and we want to answer as many as we can. In fact, we're starting this new discussion on our forums dedicated to finding out what you want to know. Each month, we'll create a new thread for you to ask questions in. We'll be reading and reviewing all of your questions and featuring some of them to be answered in a future Community Q & A section of the Studio Insider!

This month, we want questions focused on the game's Classes. Please feel free to ask us anything you want to know about them!

Some things to remember when posting:

  • Please keep questions courteous and respectful

  • Don't ask a question that has already been asked

  • Ask only one question in the thread

  • Do not bump posts.

Keep in mind that there are some questions we're not able to answer right now, so please don't feel upset if we do not select your question, and please do feel free to ask it again in the future!

Thanks! We're looking forward to your reading your questions!

Well it is similar reaction, since it's the dieing moments of the Duros and his face of shock was just so funny watching it in slow motion.

"Q: Are classes adaptable enough in order to complete a Flashpoint with a any group (e.g. 4 Jedi Consulars, possibly with the help of certain companions)? - Ashlack, Akbar

A: You will need a well-balanced group to complete a Flashpoint. Youll find some very unique and powerful combinations of Advanced Classes, but if you stack several players with the same role, youre not likely to fare well."

Translation for the simple folks: hard trinity LOL deal with it.

Damage, distract, and support.... Sounds like a concept out of the pages of "the art of war".

I can't think of a game that I would really want to play without the basic aspects of battle - the trinity is an age old concept in strategy.

"There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who see the world in two definitive ways, and those who don't"

I like where they are going with their classes. Some of it is immersion breaking, but on a gameplay level they are sound principles.

I love the trinity and wouldn't have it any other way. I'm glad they finally said it.

Yeah but you could do a flashpoint with 4 troopers. One tank specced, one healer specced, and the other two dps/tank/heal specced. It will definitely be interesting to see what combinations work best..
  • #17 Jatlantis
Except that Troopers now have the ability to fulfil each of those roles in a primary capacity - depending on your advanced class of course.

The 4 trooper-group is definitely a possibility as such.

  • #18 darthuser2806
Defiantly a possibility given they can execute each role. You would still be gimping yourself with the lack of buff diversity though. Atleast from what we have seen thus far.
  • #20 Perkunas
Now it is. At the time that wasn't the case. You have to remember this was a recent feature added based on tester feedback.

"The standard group will consist of 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 DPS. There's really no debate anymore."

But the Flashpoint as it was described to us and as I played had more than that. There was a primary role each could fulfill, but they could also execute a secondary function. The smuggler I played was supposed to be the main healer, but the consular was able to heal nearly as well. I was also able to deal some damage, and some crowd control.

This game is making hybrids of the old trinity and allowing classes to be more dynamic as the situation needs.
  • #22 Perkunas
Low level and less complex content is more forgiving when it comes to performing multi-roles. As the content grows more complex and difficult roles become more pronounced.
  • #14 neobluemax
I see gauntlet thrown down here. Its like beating the original Final Fantasy with 4 white mages. Its hard as hell but a great personal challenge once you have done everything else. 4 Troopers coming over the hill. You have all options there for heal, dps, and tank.

This game has the trinity, but its soft. Its more like pick the class you want and play in any role you feel comfortable with.
  • #15 Perkunas
Yeah, no... This game has a hard trinity. You have to have a healer and a tank. + That 4 Trooper comment was referring to questing at the time. Seeing 4 Troopers coming over the hill paints the picture of actually seeing them come over the hill where you aren't part of said group. Add in the fact that flashpoints are capped at 4 means it wasn't a dungeon.

The standard group will consist of 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 DPS. There's really no debate anymore.

Still, even within the hard trinity, there is usually some room to give for unorthodox groups. Much depends on how they balance encounters with off-type abilities. I hope with a tight, well coordinated group there will be some chance of success with off balance groups.
  • #16 Perkunas
That's exactly what they said in an interview. Basic flashpoints done by tight-knit groups of people who build to each other's strengths and weaknesses so long as the roles are being fulfilled(shared healing/ duties) would have a good shot at it. This goes out the window though when you get to raiding.
